A couple of my Vic friends are getting ready to evacuate. So many dogs to move. Hopefully they don't have to but it is seeming more like they will have too.

Why Do You Like The Kinds Of Dogs You Do?
OSoSwift replied to corvus's topic in General Dog Discussion
Love this thread, I'd be bored if my dog didn't raise the middle claw from time to time. It's nifty there are so many different breeds with so many different attributes. Yep, SkySoaringMagpie, mine don't raise their middle claw, they just stick their tails up even higher Mine just laugh at me and run off.... A agree, a great thread. I am also of the mind set if I say now I mean it, don't look at me and go in a minute - I have cats and kids for that. Now means now! I love having dogs that want to sit on my lap and cuddle. I watched Avatar with two Whippets on and next to me for the whole movie. I love that my dogs follow me around and are not wandering off all the time (that may have something to do with the fact I want to see them all the time to make sure they are not to close to a snake!) Mine are one step behind me most of the time, I have encouraged it from the beginning. -
Why Do You Like The Kinds Of Dogs You Do?

Oh, they'll adore you, but that doesn't mean they'll do what you want them to or care if you're not happy with them. Lol, sounds like most dogs I've owned! My keeshond was definitely like that. :D You obviously haven't owned a Border Collie. They live just to please their owners, do exactly as they are told and are devestated if they think they have let you down. The most important temperament trait for a Border Collie is their "will to please" their owner. I will not breed from anything that shows any tendency to being stubborn or strong willed because it loses the essence of the breed. They frequently out-think novice owners and it ends up with the dog training the owner instead of the other way around, but if you are smarter than the dog and know how to train them they are the easiest breed to live with. I couldn't handle living with dogs that didn't just do whatever I tell them to. And that is why BC's are on my one day list! -
Rearend Awareness Training

Ah yes I know that feeling myself! Standing lovely in front, zoom goes the back end. Oh well I'd prefer that I think. My Dobe got third in her class at the Nationals even when she did bum swing circles. Maybe thay gave her extra points for being clever :D -
Sorry to hear about your old girl. Hugs from us and Whippet nose prods.

I class incontinence as large wet patches on dog beds/lounges, flooding beds and dripping urine (or pouring as was the case with my bitch)while walking along. I am not saying that we should all not desex our dogs, that would be a disaster, but I personally will not be desexing any future female dogs until much later in their lives.

Rearend Awareness Training

My dogs love it and will do it constantly given the chance. I choose to have a cue so they do it on cue and not randomly. ie I want to be able to heel past a phone book and not have dogs racing to plonk their feet on it. -

yep me too -
I am with PEtplan and mine didn't go up or if it did I think it may have been around a $1. I haven't had any huge claims but I have got my premium back for each dog so far! The main reason I went with Petplan was they cover a condition for life, not to the maxium then it is not covered after that. I can spend up to my maximum coverage each year for any condition until I stop paying for the cover of they die. One snake bite and I have back potentially 10 years of premiums. I am happy with that. I looked at all the compaines and took a week of studying and decided that this one was the best I could find. I have never had a claim rejected and all payments are done very quickly.

I use "feet". I also use it when stacking them to get them to move the front feet slightly forward and more often than not square -

Thank you I like it when people recognise what I am trying to achieve. Makes up for the skinny dog comments from the general public -
Kelpie Coat - Summer/winter
OSoSwift replied to koalathebear's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
To me it looks like he is blowing his coat and more of the light undercoat is showing through. You will probably find in winter when he gets a thicker coat you won't see it and in summer you will see it. If you look through his pants on his back legs he will probably have light undercoat there as well. Possibly down the shoulder too. -

If you click the My WHippets little linky thing in my sigi you can see my dogs there People think I am nuts. I look at them and if they look a smidge over weight I cut their food down until the look right again, or bump it up. Rommi has recently had 8 weeks off due to injury, but is starting to get definition back now thank goodness, hate the unsculpted look. Lewis is nearly two and finally starting to hold the muscle definition I like. IT does come a little with maturity as once Rommi was around the same age she held her definition better. I have been told I need a little more cover on them for the ring, but I am resisting as I don't get to shows very often. -
Sore In Front Legs/shoulder Joints
OSoSwift replied to boxagirl's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yeah I thought that was strange aswell, guess we will find out monday. She also hasn't lost any muscle mass on a particular limb (which vet said is associated with arthritis) and the pain comes and goes.. Good point about the muscle mass, if it was a slowly building thing like joint damage you would see a degree of muscle wastage. Other thing to do if Xrays don't show much would be to contact a good chiro. Might be soft tissue, nerve etc. -
Im Going To Get Flamed For This.. I Do Feel Really Bad Though..
OSoSwift replied to a topic in General Dog Discussion
Yep that really is the same! Sorry but some people are just plain stupid. Dogs were killing livestock, they got shot as the person had a right to do. What part of that is so hard to understand?? This person is now feeling awful about killing some dogs that should not have been there. If my dogs roam and get shot it MY fault and the only person I can be mad at is me. I personally would never forgive myself if my dogs roamed and were, as a consequence, shot. It is MY responsibily to keep my dogs home! We have had dogs turn up here. Some obviously lost confused and in need of a drink and feed. They get that while we track down their owners. It has happened more than once. I have never had stock worried but I can tell you now if I went outside to see a dog or dogs chasing or worrying my stock they would get shot first adn ask questions later. I live surrounded by a lot of hobby farmers who all having working dogs without a job, quite often they create their own. If it is with my stock the dogs will be shot. I have seen the consequence of peoples pet dogs playing, it was horrific to say the least. People who say Bigdog has done the wrong thing obviously have no idea what it is like to come across your stock that you have looked after to the best of your ability torn to shreds, in muscle meltdown or dead. Would you like to see ewe with not yet born lambs torn from them??? No? well I have seen it and it is not something I want to see again. YOUR DOG ROAMS AND GET SHOT IT IS YOUR FAULT - and yes I have raised my voice! -
I Can't Take A Trick This Week. Just Venting

Poor Guinea Pig had a moronic owner! Not your fault in the slightest. Maybe take a rolled up newspaper next door and repeatedly wack him over the head whilst repeating "I should have immediately called my neighbour to get my daughters Guinea Pig back safe. I am a moronic d%$khead" At least you would feel a little better! -
Sore In Front Legs/shoulder Joints
OSoSwift replied to boxagirl's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
The fact she seems to go down hill quickly then improve nearly as quickly makes me think it isn't arthiritis???? I am glad she is more comfortable and you got some painkillers. Hope all goes well for Monday. -

I aim to keep my dogs in peak fitness all year round as I like the way the look when they are like that. I only show rarely. I tend to have mine leaner and fitter than a lot of other people (who don't race them) have them. I feed a good quality dry food and sardines, cottage cheese, meat, odd bit of dog sausage, yoghurt etc. They get fish oil and EPO around every second day and glucosamine as they run and play hard and I jump them for agility. They have free running and play on 5 acres, I lead walk them and all throw balls toys etc for them to chase. They get ran next to a bike a couple of times a week as well. I believe in cross training. I use Plush Puppy shampoo, but may try another recommended brand when I finally run out of this one. Afte they are washed I put Plush Puppy Reviva coat on them. Their coats always look nice, but being a single coated, shorthaired breed it is much more simple than a coated breed. -
Sore In Front Legs/shoulder Joints
OSoSwift replied to boxagirl's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Wobblers does affect the back legs and that is where the name Wobblers comes from, but quite often the first thing people pick up on unless the back end is very obvious is the pain in the front legs. With my old girl when she did her neck, she would not bend her front legs would not lay down had her head down (she looked a little like an upside down banana!) and was yelping, couldn't or wouldn't walk due to the pain. She snapped at a marchfly and started screaming. After she recovered from the first occasion she had it on other occasions but no where near as bad and I used to give her, among other things, valium as I was told that the muscles can go into spasm and the lowish dose of valium helps to relieve that and therefore some of the pain as well. If it has come on suddenly and is affecting both of her front legs then I would be thinking more likely a neck injury(not necessarily wobblers) but maybe a bulging disk. I would get in contact with your vet in the morning, if she is in that much pain I am sure they would be happy to give you at least enough pain killers to get her through until monday. They have seen her for it before and recently. -
Sore In Front Legs/shoulder Joints
OSoSwift replied to boxagirl's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Thanks Yes she does look sore and stiff in the neck aswell today- but my vet said that would probably be associated with shoulder pain.. I always thought human painkillers were toxic to dogs? I have a large crate used for the show dogs, but she isnt crate trained so I don't know how well she would relax in there. At the moment I have her locked in my room with me. I have found that front leg pain is quite often associated with neck pain. But I hope I am wrong. Some human painkillers can be toxic but some can be used with the correct dosage can be used. If you ring your vet you may be able to get a dosage that you can use to make her more comfortable. Are Boxers prone to wobblers at all????? -
Sore In Front Legs/shoulder Joints
OSoSwift replied to boxagirl's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Keeping her warm and on sort bedding will help also very little exercise, maybe a large crate??? If she is very sore you can get dose rates of human over the counter medication but should only give on medical advice and with the correct dose. I would be a little worried about her neck, My Dobe had similar symptoms when she ruptured a disk in her neck and I have also had a Dobe with wobblers and one of the signs is pain in the front legs and a reluctance to lay down move and they carry their head quite low among other things. Fingers crossed she is okay. I probably wouldn't let her jump onto beds or lounges Good luck -
I am not trying to be rude at all but why are these little guys(Pyr Sheps) so good??? They look rather unremarkable so they must be good workers I guess????
-
A female Dobe??? A Vizsla - friend had one, loved her to bits. Rather bouncy though! The right Whippet would be okay - One like Lewis for example, totally ball obssessed, very focused and will train all day every day. However you would need to find the right one, Rommi would not be what you were after. Lewis is around 14.5kgs and a decent sized dog and 20 and a 1/4 inches tall so I think height wise would be fine Mine love to be with me all the time though and will follow me to the toilet just to make sure I don't escape. I have encouraged that there are some people who's Whippets check in from time to time but are happy in their own space, so once again temperment and conditioning will impact that behaviour. My Dobe bitch was 25 inches tall and around 29kgs and would work until she dropped dead as well. She loved agility and obedience and was very drivey and would have been a dream to train in drive I think, I clicker trained and she loved that and did well despite her novice handler.

Jed my understanding is the dog was a medium cross breed of probably bull breed history, like a Staffy X which are very common around here. I believe a person whom he bragged to reported him to the ranger but their identity is being kept annonymous. I am thankful he has actually been found guilty, even though I do not think the result is severe enough as the man from Noreseman who killed the horse, his case got thrown out due to some minor techinicality. So at least this one has been found guilty. I know someone who WAS a friend of his and she was completely shocked. He won't have too many friends now. This town is small enough he will feel the repercussions for a long time-as he should.
