I would get her checked before going away. It may be not much, but you don't want to be away and all of a sudden have a life and death situation on your hands.

Are Yearly Vaccinations Neccessary?
OSoSwift replied to CreamyPuff's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Could have written this myself, this is exactly what I do and the same reasons for doing it that way -
Great news Mason, new puppy and a holiday here you come

I have been out of it for a little while but there are a couple I can PM have to nip out and do some jobs but will send you a pm later.

I tried it once but due to where it is packaged I decided not to get it. I do sometimes buy them sardines which are packaged in Thailand but I prefer the whole fish to fish plus other fillers.

I was thinking the same thing Erny. If it is his thyroid then it is easier than dealing with the problems individually. I would personally test his thyroid earlier rather than later purely because it is a potential issue for Dobes. If it was a breed that it was rare to non-existant in then I wouldn't but if it is his thyroid then it will potentially save you a lot of stress and other medications. Goodluck and I hope he is feeling much better very soon.

I do mine 3 yearly. -
Just called Misters, they're in the hose and fitting section at Bunnings, you can get them online but they tend to be pricey. We have ours on a timer. Thank you I will check them out when next in there.

I went camping with Ivy last Easter, lots of fun! Interesting experience sharing an air bed with your dog  Has to be better than sharing one with my OH he tosses and turnes and I get flung out! I think airbeds should be banned they are so awful to sleep on, swags are much more comfortable

What sane dog would not want to chase free range bunnies!!! My Whippets chase bunnies when allowed - not by themselves, we have cats they do not chase and once had a house full of Guinea Pigs get upended in the wind. None of the guinea pigs were harmed even when one bolted after being sniffed on the bum. I of course never leave them togther but I personally think they should be able to tell the difference. If you are worried I would find some fleece chew toys and something that doesn't squeak.

Ongoing Skin Problems/itchiness
OSoSwift replied to aussielover's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Our Old Stafford's allergies started showing at 14 months. He is now 14 and has progressivly gotten worse. He is now on 20mg of prednisolone every second day for another issue but even that is not enough to stop his allergies completely over summer anymore. -
Wish I could get my dogs microchipped at your vet mine is $60 each.

What exactly are the misters called and how do they work? DO they only work when you turn them on or can you put them on a timer???

I think for me part of the problem is it is such an organisational feat to actually get to a trial I don't want to stuff it up as it may be months and hundreds of dollars to get to another trial for another go. If I had the opportunity to got to trial regularly and not have to spend so much on fuel and accomodation then I wouldn't be so worried about muffing it. At the moment even if the dogs passed every trial that I entered them in it would still take two years to get their titles. If I can fit in a trip or two to Perth then I may be able to do it sooner but the odds of that are very slim.

I can tell you from experience it will buy you a few hours. My dog was bitten on the lip twice by a 6 to 7 foot dugite (brown snake).Vet said becuase of capillaries this is the worst place to get bitten.I saw her get bitten and injected her intravenously straight away and then an hour later. It was 2 to 3 hours by the time I got a vet and got to the surgery.I am talking about a 60 pound dog,so there is no way a dog that size bitten where it was could have survived that long without it.Vet administered antivenine and dog was looking good but the inexpereinced vet gave her an atropin injection straight away and stopped her heart so I lost my best mate and still had to pay $900.All he could say as I carried her out the door was are you going to pay now or later. He is very lucky he still has his front teeth. If I was 2 to 3 hours from a vet I would defintately give Vit C as if it did buy me time that would be a good thing. Luckily I am much closer so I would bolt. Our vet routinely gives Vit C when treating an animal for snake bite and I do have some in my fridge just in case. As you never know. Due to the fact it would take as long to give it by IV slowly as it would to get to the vet it is easy for me to say I wouldn't give it as it would nearly double the time to get to vet care. So far I have been very lucky and haven't needed to test the theory. Had a few close calls but no bites thankfully.

I was thinking the same Showdog, certainly not very schnauzer looking. I am sure Becks will have her looking correct again in no time

Hope your migraine goes soon I can fully sympathise, Except for a few occassions I am usually on the mend once I start being sick. The other couple of times I have ended up on a drip. But usually it signals the end is nigh Will send go away nasty migraine vibes to you

I can sypathise. I don't want to let my dogs down by screwing up the handling, but by getting uptight they look at me like I have three heads and I do then stuff it up so it is really counter productive. Me thinks the whole bottle sounds like a good enough dose for me!!

wow that certainly is an interesting trim! Would love to see the after photos as well How long ago was it last trimmed?

A C5 is $88 from memory A trienniel with canine cough is around $160, then of course you would need canine cough yearly if that is the protocol you follow. It ends up costing more to do the trienniel + canine cough than the yearly because they do not want people to go the trienniel route. They don't have C3 only it is C4 and C5 only. 3 dogs + is a 10% discount, 5 + dogs is a 20% discount.

Well it's either that or a strong alcoholic drink, since I don't usually drink I am thinking that will not help me me when trying to do straight lines!!! So I think Rescue remedy is a little safer
-
That's the point though, they said they would pay X amount. Saying and doing are two very different things which is why the situation stands as it is.

While Vit C has been shown to be some help I personally wouldn't stop for the amount of time required to give it. Unless I lived a very long distance from veterinary help. Also some snakes dry bite, as in they strike but do not envenomate. If this is the case, giving Vit C would appear to cure the bite when there was no envenomation in the first place. Do you have a study showing it buys a few hours?? While I believe it can help I am not sure I would confidently say it can buy a few hours. There are so many factors involved with envenomation to death that I am not sure I would trust it that much. My advice is grab and bolt, ideally getting someone else to phone ahead so the vets are expecting you. Obviously there is the issue of payment with some clinics so I would advise finding out what your vets protocol is on that BEFORE you actually need to put it to the test.

That is really good, well done to you and your boys I have attatched a yard to my dogs dog runs as the house yard is livestock fencing and not escape proof and due to snakes I wouldn't leave them out anyway. I have dug out the dirt for the trench and am now shovelling in large blue metal so the the chainmesh and snake mesh are buried but won't rust. I have around another 600 to700kgs to shovel, but due to hurting my back last time I have had a bit of a rest from doing it at the moment

What's The Most Ridiculous Thing Your Dog's Been Called?
OSoSwift replied to ~Rumour~'s topic in General Dog Discussion
I get the common ones liek Greyhound, baby greyhound. Did get asked one day if they were real Whippets, not sure what other type of Whippet they may have been?? I get asked if they have won races or are they rescues which all goes with the greyhound theme. I do get annoyed when I get told they need to be fed though.
