Our capital city is 750kms away and most of my dogs have come from there so far We recently had 2 puppies arrive from Tassie and one from Adelaide to friends of mine, they were flown over without them being seen by their new owners. I would go wherever in Australia and potentially New Zealand to get the puppy I was after.

No matter what the breed you will get negative reactions. I figure it is all about them and I tell them you get what you train. Poodles are wonderful intellegent little (and big ) dogs who quite often are bored witless and would desperately love something to do. They are on my one day list

Am I glad they don't do it there anymore! Whippets just do not do cross country puddles - unless there is a bunny on the other side I am also glad you don't have to do two rounds of the novice now, never mind when you had to heel forever! I am getting a gel seat cover, 7 or so kms is one thing, 20kms is another ball park all together!

Endurance Test 2011 Thread

Blimey Emery if you do go I will most liekly be put to shame - I could barely waddle at 41 weeks pregnant! Be nice to meet you though -
Trust me the intial bit made my bottom and legs very sore. Now they are quite good - no smaller unfortunately, but at least they don't hurt now. We did 7km bike ride and a 3 km walk today Lewis LOVES it. Rommi only does the walks as she thinks biking more than 2 kms is far too much!

Registered Breeding Dog In Council Pound - Help Required
OSoSwift replied to ishka81's topic in General Dog Discussion
Blimey I hope it is not as it sounds and it is sorted in the morning. -
Personally I do not ask for sedation for small animals, but definately do for horses. My Clyde was sedated when I had to have her euthed just before Christmas. My dogs are used to being held, they are used with having legs held and are fine with a good ole vet poke around and check up. All of my animals have layed quietly on the table, I usually hold up their vein, they are injected and are gone very quickly. I think that animals are more likely to get stressed and fight if they are not used to being restrained and that is why I start with my puppies the day the come home. You never know when you may need it. I can hold mine quite firmly if required and they do not fight me at all. I have had my DCM dog take a little while to pass properly due to her crap circulation, but she was totally unconcious at the time.

I have always used Martingale and limited slip collars in the trial ring. I have never been questioned about them, but they are always at the base of the neck and are firm enough so they do not bang around, but do sit comfortably.

Very sorry to hear that Emery. Hopefully once you have spoken to the vet his pain can be managed until your husband comes home and you decide what to do. Lots of hugs and Whippy nose prods from us

I am not sure lots of people could cope with your little Zac! I guess he will settle down one day, maybe when he is around 12 or so! Goodluck with that Bedazzled!

Which obedience trial are u doing ?? Umm I think it is the Northern Suburbs one, it is the Sunday after the ET trial anyway at Carine Open space or something similar. thats my club, we will be there It will be lovely to be able to meet you and Mason in person We have had a small training break - been ramping up the km's a little for the ET, but will be back into it this weekend, so hopefully I don't embarress myself !

We still do. They send us to special classes in school about how to stay positive & not kill ourselves. True story. wow! i didn't know that. is it because what vets see on a day to day basis? As well as the other things already stated, You see people at heightened emotional states, the can get very upset at losing an animal, they quite often get angry and quite often lash out at the person who is closest to the situtaion - the veterinary staff. Money is involved always an emotive issue and one we see debated on here from time to time. Animals died you have worked bloody hard to save and there is nothing you can do about it. You euthanse pets of people you know well, sometimes very well You euthanase animals you have a long and often close history with. You get abused by clients You see animals in some seriously awful states, allowed to get that way by people You see some seriouly injured and animals in enormous amounts of pain and stress. Some days it is a "bad day" any many of these things happen one after the other. You thank dog that you can go home and relax with your own animals as you need it. Magnify that with long hours, not a huge amount of pay and the easy means and knowledge to achieve it and well you can see why. Many only think of the nice side, of which there are many, but it can be an emotional rollercoaster at times.

Just do what bedazzled does - go for the naughty one!!!! Don't believe when she says her Isaak is naughty, butter wouldn't melt in those pirahna - I mean puppy jaws

I don't think I would have an issue with it, I woudl be more concerned about your lead tightening (which of course will not happen in novice ) I do not see that it would give any extra head control or any extra control when there is not a lead attatched. I would also prefer my dogs to be naked int he ring, but can understand that collars can be helpful handles in an emergency situation.

I would get his knees checked as it is a very common sign of luxating patella's. Hope it isn't, but would be best to be sure.

Very old and very unwell animals can also have very poor blood pressure and it can make getting a vein very dificult. They can also collapse fairly easily. What happened to your friend would have been very distressing for her and her girl, but I can say it is only very rarely that such things happen and all bar one I have been at seen (which is lots) have been very peaceful. I am very sorry this happened to your friend and this dog and I think maybe the gentle suggestion of some councilling for your friend may not be a bad idea.

I have no issue with live dogs being used that are then euthed - or woken up and rehomed as deemed suitable. I think it is a very important part of veterinary student training. I think there are worse things than euthanasia. I have held and been there for the euthanasia of many healthy dogs who people have dumped in pounds, or left there because it will cost them money to get it out, they then go and get a new 'free to good home" dog or puppy because it costs less. I know when those dogs are euthanased they can no longer be abused, roam the steets and all the dangers that come with that, they cannot be starved, abandoned or ignored. I guess working in the veterinary industry for so many years may mean I look at things differently, but there are quite a few surgeries and procedures I would rather euthanase my dog than have performed on them. In a perfect world it wouldn't be an issue but unfortunately humans have a long way to go.

Is That A Male Newf, I Want To Use Him To Breed
OSoSwift replied to newfsie's topic in General Dog Discussion
That is horrendous!!! I hate the attitude "well close enough is good enough". That is the same reason we have a litter of Greyhound X Whippets down here looking for homes - because they are pretty much the same anyway aren't they??? Arrgghhh! -
Endurance Test 2011 Thread
OSoSwift replied to TerraNik's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Ah okay no worries. It seems exercise induces toileting in him at least 50% of the time. My Dobe wouldn't have as she would have gone before, but he will go three times sometimes! -
