  1. My Dobe I had I did not train while she was in season, immediately before or during her 15 week - yes 15 week phantoms! She was a complete bitch leading up to her season, a total cannot think while in season, then while having a phantom if you looked at her the wrong way she looked like a beaten dog. Then she would go through a false labour and try and kill any dog that came close to her hole and babies, then a week later was back to normal. Needless to say the fact she gained her CDX while entire was a small miracle in it's self! Once she was desexed she was great all the time and a pleasure to live with and train and the male dog was quite happy as before her moods could change between morning and afternoon! Rommi doesn't change anywhere near as much but I still don't train when she is in season or immediately after, more through habit I guess more than anything and I don't want to risk stressing her out when she is a fairly soft dog anyway and I am sure the hormones will probably make her more sensitive than normal. A few weeks break is no major drama to us.
  2. Ness, That is what my vet said. Initially only on lead and short walks to toilet etc, then short leads walks but no jumping at all. They said that if she was kept too quiet then muscle wastage could be a real issues and cause further problems. They were also a little worried about her freezing up a bit with no exercise at all. She did lose quite a bit of muscle tone, but it wasn't severe. So she was crated for the first week and toilets only, then short lead walks and in the dog run or tethered to her bed as she is very quiet in the dog run, then into a small yard then eventually what felt like forever, back to free running but no zoomies (near on impossible with a whippet I tell you!) then back to whatever she wanted to do. I am happy to say after over 3 months she was sound and has stayed that way (apart from dislocating her toe!) and has great muscles back again.
  3. I feed mine mainly dry, but they get meat, vegies, bones, sardines, cottage cheese, yoghurt etc. I actually trialled feeding them only dry food for a set period of time and they looked exactly the same. However I do think they need bones for their teeth and jaws, and the other stuff for some variety.
  4. Was going to say the same thing. Mine are around cats with no problems and Lewis even sniffed a loose Guinea pig's bottom and when it ran I thought oh no it's a gonna. Nope when I roared leave it, he did, and moved away with Rommi to watch me diving around like a loonie trying to catch all escapee's! Mine are also around sheep, cattle and horses. So training and socialisation helps you achieve what it is you need to. Mine play pretty rough and yes they are softer than my Dobe or the Stafford and if you yell they don't like it much, but I would not class them as timid.
  5. Went looking Ptolomy and haven't found it yet, will yell if I do :D
  6. Poor Ness, stay quiet little girl as even thought it is driving you nuts it is the quickest and best way to recovery. It just sucks doesn't it, they have no idea why we won't let them do anything. Fingers crossed she heals up quickly for both your sakes.
  7. I would agree a male Whippet they are VERY people orientated and love cruising around. Will exercise but happy to lay around as well. They lose a little hair, but I just go over mine with a Zoom Groom and can then forget about it for weeks. They do need to be inside and do feel the cold so need a coat as well. My OH who was not a dog person is completly sold on the Whippets and lets them get away with more than I do!
  8. Aww poor little boy. Lots of get well vibes being sent hos way and hugs for you Teebs - human beings inhumanity at times is very depressing.
  9. That is really unusual Stormie. I have not seen that before in a dog desexed or otherwise, but I guess as they were not my dogs I probably wouldn't have noticed. Is it a particular condition or just one of those things?
  10. Wouldn't gross me out, but then again a thread I started on Suprelorin had before and after shots of testicles!
  11. If he is desexed I would have his penis checked just to be sure. A young poodle once came in doing something similar although his penis did look a little redder than normal. It was swabbed and I cannot remember what it was, but he had an infection. Course of tablets later and he stopped licking his penis and sheath
  12. It is easy to differentiate the two breeds One is the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, the other the American Staffordshire Terrier. So there is no need to add English to anything.
  13. Great to hear both Zeus and Scoota are on the improve and also Emery's cat. I am wondering if anyone would know of accomodation that is kid and dog friendly for the middle of June?? It would be for 2 nights maybe a night or two more - not quite sure as yet. I have found some googling, but would appreciate it if anyone can recommend something.
  14. To a point I understand your frustraion as my OH thinks I am rather delusional when it comes to the dogs as well. If he gets annoyed at me it quite often ends up being turned around to involve the dogs as he knows he can get a rise out of me when he can't while talking about the other thing (or arguing) He is also slowly figuring out that if he annoys me about the dogs too much I go and by something to really spoil them or something they don't really need. He also cannot understand why the dogs need to be inside "all" the time and although I do have them in and out during the day, he will bring that into an argument to annoy me at times. Now I look at him walk out the door grabbing a lead on the way and go walk the dogs leaving the kids with him!
  15. I loved the updates, thank you for letting us know how she is going. SHe sounds liek she has landed in Kelpie heaven. Kudos to you for putting her needs well before your own. If you get any more updates I for one would love to hear how she is going in the next chapter of her life.
  16. The problem is we are just seen as a bunch of red necks who murder our roo's - exactly some previous words. We would be best to leave them all there to die slowly from starvation aparently. They have no idea, if he does regain use of his legs he could potentially be very dangerous. I also agree that she would have no idea what he was thinking if he cannot get away from her or the other people who's face she is shoving him in. I have hand fed roo's and all give the ability and being healthy enough will return to the wild and go back to living happily. Some males can become a problem though as they are not scared by humans and can become aggressive which is why many are castrated. A Roo would not live like this by choice. The roo should have been euthanased when he was originally injured and the park should have the book thrown at them for releaseing him full stop as they failed in their duty of care, but to release him to a moron who parades him around like a freak show is even more reprehensible.
