None of my dogs have had any soundeness issues relation to the area around where their dewclaw has been removed, arthritis in that joint or hyper sensitivity.
-
My puppies had them removed, all my adult dogs have had them removed apart from our working BC. I have had no issues with joint issues. I have Whippets adn they do stick out a fair way. I have seen whippets come through my kennels with them still on adn the owners often comment on how often they are injured and the nails are quite often very deformed. Some have had them removed later with a much harder longer recovery. Dew claws are easy and very quick to remove. Mine were done in the whelping box and they protested more about being removed from the boob than their dewclaws being removed. I would do it again. If I really liked a dog I would not let it having it's dewclaws on, stop me from buying that pup.

Mixing Kibble With Raw ?
OSoSwift replied to ElizabethBailey's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have done it in the past, have done dry only and raw only. Have seen no issues with any of them provided all ingredients/products are of high quality. -

Maybe a sebacious cyst of some type? One my old Dobe had one on her leg, we actually cut it out as she was getting some other "things" removed, turned out it was like a really big, but under the skin black head type thing. She got the odd one down the track and I used to stab them with a 18g needle and squeeze them and grey/black but fairly firm gunk would come out.

I recently had a dog in the kennels, possibly around 20kgs, maybe a little more. He had valium for anxiety and started on one tablet, did nothing, went up to two just took the edge of but still a bit wound up, was told he could have three per dose and he had it three times a day.

Oh yay, I most certainly do. What an amzingly strong little man he was. Happy birthday Leo

When You Stay In Dog Friendly Accommodation
OSoSwift replied to sheena's topic in General Dog Discussion
What an amazing spot to stay :) The one thing I look for is a fenced off area. Mine are great with fencing so it doesn't have to be tall, escape proof fencing, but a reasonable fence so they can tonkle around without me having to have eyes peeled in three directions is great. I would take my crate for the dogs, but would prefer they could be inside as otherwise they would be noisy little boogers. -
Thyroid Carcinoma - Anyone With Experince With This?
OSoSwift replied to Stormy's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
A friend of mine has had this issue with her Whippet. She had surgery and had most of it removed I would think around two years ago now and is still going well, but they know it will come back in time and they have ahd more time with her than they thought. -

I agree with you totally except for the "many" greyhounds that won't be afforded the same care unless they are of some value. I know a trainer who spent 10k on his retired, desexed bitch at SASH last year only to have to have her PTS when nothing more could be done for her. Broke his heart, I know this guy personally. He has two other retired dogs that now live on his lounge, swim at the beach every day with him and are loved and adored. He is a small time hobby trainer but has been lumped in with all the rest of the bad eggs. People are quick to tar with the same brush without some of them ever having met a trainer or been to a facility and that annoys me no end. Yes I looked after two just a few weeks ago with the same sort of owner. He bred them, trained them and now they are retired with him. He lost one to snake bite a week before they were due to come in and he was a mess. He will be lumped in with them as well and that is not fair to him and many others like him -

I feel this way as well I have to say. How that can happen, I am not sure. There does need to be closer monitoring and much tighter regulations adn yes the amount of surplus dogs needs to be dealt with in a much more satisfactory way. I know of Whippets injured racing each other in the back yard and yes the odd one dieing from injuries gained in racing around with their friends. So yes there are injuries adn yes they are under more pressure but injuries on the track should not be a main reason to stop racing. My Whippet injured her knee after running around with my dog at home and zagged when she should have zigged. -

OSoSwift replied to Boronia's topic in In The News
yes this is true, however they are raised differently and are trained to chase - which some other sighthounds do for fun ie lurecoursing etc. But due to the fact they are raised differently I believe they should be routinely temp tested, as should any dog that is put through a rescue or shelter regardless of breed, and I do believe resource guarding is very important. I have Whippets that will chase a bunny but wouldn't dream of chasing the cat and have stood there while guinea pigs ran around their feet, after being told to leave them, whilst I tried to catch them. Mine will also call off chasing a rabbit. Most Greys in training do not get taught the basics of average living so there needs to be some sort of steps they need to get through before they become pets. I also believe not every dog, grey or other, should be rehomed as I do not believe that everything can be trained out of them. -

There was a fair amount of rain after the fires, the water may have been used, it may have refilled. I do wonder when people do put statements like this out in the public domain. It is a blurry line
