  1. I know of many people that have started with an associate dog and gone on to get a registered pedigree. WA you can register as many associate dogs as you like, they have to be desexed as with anywhere else. I think allowing more people to register and compete with associate dogs makes it more likely they will then buy a registered pedigree dogs. Two friends have just done exactly this!
  2. I do not have a problem if studbooks are opened on an as needs basis. I do not have a problem if it is done to fix an issue that cannot be fixed by using the dogs already registered - as in the Dalmatian and the use of the Pointer. I do not have an issue if the studbook is opened to unregistered purebreds that are free from the diseases that are an issue. I do have an issue if the books are just thrown open and anyone is invited, I do have a problem if it is a blanket thing across all breeds. I am sure all ethical breeders want their puppies and dogs to be healthy, I am sure they would like to breed very healthy dogs with no health issues. If stud books are opened judiciosly then that can be achieved without opening all books to all and sundry. It was not so long ago the Jack Russells books were open. I also remember what was involved to get a dog registered. It can be done, but using a shotgun to do the work of a .22 is not in anyones favour.
  3. Just read this a few days ago as well. I use advocate, so not sure if that being a mectin is a potential issue as well??
  4. The dose of Fish oil is 1000mg per 10kgs bodyweight which can be doubled if there is skin or joint issues. Keep in mind you will need to either give them vitamin E or find fish oil that has is added. I wouldn't worry too much about the added amounts while they are beneficial, you will need a higher dose than a complete dog food can gibe. I would go BH over Eukanuba as well.
  5. Hmmm... even the term "pet friendly" is apparently different to what I think of as friendly, though. I have just gone through the process of trying to book a place for a few days, and one real estate agent was most offended when I commented that I did not think that a property which didn't allow dogs inside at all, even crated, and had only wire stock fencing should be advertised as dog friendly. When I asked for a listing of other dog-friendly properties on their books only one of about 15 allowed dogs inside, and a lot of them where in built-up areas. Just what I'd want as a neighbor - a visiting dog barking overnight because it doesn't understand why it's outside! I do agree on that point... I always contact them to find out their conditions and fencing. Sure you have to look around, but we have stayed at heaps of places that have let the dogs inside (just counting them... probably around 8 different places now). Some have bent their rules to let our dogs be crated inside, or not in the bedrooms, or if we vacuum afterwards, etc Totally agree. I find most properties in the fine print say "small dog only" or "outside dog only". This is not pet friendly!!! If you want your dog inside it means they are house trained. Wouldn't there be just as much chance of a child doing damage to the property that there would a dog!! I have been lucky to find a person who had 2 holiday houses close to a dog friendly beach and his houses are actually dog friendly. Dogs are allowed inside, in the pool and he has not rules about the size or number of dogs. This is pet friendly!!! I think it goes both ways. In general a lot of dog owners in Australia are not very responsible with their pets. I have a friend who works at a motel that is pet friendly, but they have a lot of problems with poorly behaved, aggressive, not house-trained dogs and owners who think that pet friendly means that they can lock their dog in the room all day while they go out or worse, that the motel staff are there to look after the dog for them........ Fortunately, this motel will always be pet friendly despite some bad experiences - they manage the exceptions (through an extra cleaning charge) rather than just make a blanket assumption that all pets are going to make a mess and as a result have had some lovely people with lovely dogs stay at the motel. My friend has always told me though that he'd much rather a dog in the motel any day than children, who do far more damage and make far more mess......LOL. CAre to share who they are ??? They will get some good publicity adn we will know of a great place to stay
  6. Agreed. There may be some breeds hwere opening up the studbook is beneficial. But in my breed there is no need at this point. So yep I do take offence in the notion that all pedigree registred dogs are inbred and need to be "fixed" by crossbreeding.
  7. It is so exciting getting the official certificate, We are waiting for ours to arrive in the mail :D
  8. I believe Shortstep has ISDS Border Collies - May be wrong though
  9. Whoops trying to type inbetween getting kids ready for bed!
  10. Poor girl, hope she is feeling better very soon
  11. Yep horse suppliers will have animalintex which is one poultice you can buy. You can also soak the paw in Epsom salts dissolved in water - only issue is how long she will sit still and if she will let you, so a poultice bandaged on is a good way to go. There are probably other brnad names of a simialr thing.
  12. My cousin ate the cats bikkies for quite a while and she is now a lovely evry intellegent ICU nurse and also a midwife - nothing wrong with it at all. Mine occassionally run a round on all fours and imitate the dogs - perfectly normal around here!
  13. Yep there are thousands, but if a Whippet came up I would put that as my first priority as mentioned I cannot save them all, so I will try to help out where I can. Also if a dog/puppy of mine was in a FTH ad I would like to think that maybe another person with a soft spot for whippets my try very hard to bring the add to my attention if possible so I could get my babies back.
  14. When I worked at one vet hospital I was seen as very weird for wanting toparticipate in shows dog sports etc. I was just about the anti-Christ for having a pedigree registered entire dog. Was a bit of a bang back to earth when we had had a great weekend away , and you would walk in and the onepersonwho didn't think I was weird would ask how you had gone and you were happily sharing the news to have others walk past with down right rude and dispareging remarks.
  15. Mine have been held easily behind 3 foot fences, however if they were being left in the yard without me being close by then I would go 6 foot to be safe. My dog yard could possibly be close to 7 foot which is possibly overkill, but we were recycling and they was the height of the fence. IT also has snake mesh along the bottom that is buried into a trench of blue metal. A friend called past the other day and she has the climbing Whippet from hell. She said hers would probably climb my fence unless it was a little wobbly towards the top, then she would probably stop. But if it is firm she would go straight over.
  16. Most of the vets I know have BYB dogs and puppies and have no idea about even the health tests available for different breeds. Most I know think that nasty rego'd breeders are the ones who have created the issues in purebred dogs. Most are not able to differentiate between rego'd breed dogs and BYB purebreds, never mind between ethical rego's breeder or not. So while my vets are wonderful at fixing my dog and diagnosing disease they are not the people I would speak to regarding ethical breeding practices. Sad but true!
  17. There are actual crash tested ones available, I am thinking looing at these that these ones are not crash tested?? And also it may just be the picture, but the harness looks a little loose at the front of the chest on the handsome young Shepherd :D
  18. OMGoodness, he is so very very very cute!!!!!! Many more photos please
  19. Well done MonElite - first pass down, next one will be just that little easier :D
  20. PM Wayrod on here and ask him for a quite. HE does pet transport at very reasonable prices
  21. Really, never heard of that and I know of lots of people that use tethering to keep their dogs on their property, even though they are fenced.
  22. Was going to say the same thing Stormie. Been thinking about you today Jules. Still sending lots of hugs
  23. Train train and train it Kaffy. My Dobe bitch would not have put up with another acting aggressive towards her. We trained that she 1 - didn't not move and knew the exercise inside out and 2 - she gave me hard eye contact the whole time. Once we went into out of sight stays she would basically do the same thing, look straight ahead. To be honest if all else failed and a dog got up and stood over or attacked mine I would not care if it was against the rules I would got to my dog, or intervene to stop a dog fight as my dogs safety is my first priority. With the Whippets I know they will not fight, but if any dog attacked them I would do what it took to save them and cut the fight short. The dog would be reported around 10 seconds after I knew my dog was okay!
