Endurance Test 2011 Thread
OSoSwift replied to TerraNik's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Oh how exciting Murve Still waiting on ours :D -
And if some "breeders" stopped putting shit in the ring, then judges would not have to non-award them! True, but if they are not good enough and they get non awarded often enough it might just sink im! Dreamin' MAybe, but that is their job, they are the judge and they have the final say don't they. If they do not think the dogs are good enough, they should non-award simple. We are talking about the breeders and exhibitors not the judges Yep your right, sorry! And yes you would hope the exhibitor would get the idea that maybe their dog is not good enough, although I guess if a judge does occassionally award the dog then they will keep coming back. So I suppose that that changes with a particular persons interpretation on the standard. Do people keep going back with a dog if it is non-awarded a few times? I wouldn't.

  They sure do!!!! One ET and a CCD pass around $400 to $500 and I didn't have to pay for accomodation!
-
Oh crap Ptolomy, Did they manage to take anything??? How stupid to they have to be to try and rob places that have lots of dogs?
-
It also has 2% wheat in it... The puppy food has, but the adult is wheat free.

Hehehe :D Oh I want to don't get me wrong, and we have relatives to catch up with in SA. Just need to sort the budget, add a couple of kids to the travelling team and it costs quite a bit more - just for accomodation! I am lucky though, I am 750kms closer than those leaving from Perth And we do have the odd direct flight from Kalgoorlie I am hoping my lotto numbers may come up before then
-
Well said PF - we don't have a breed club and the closest a Specialty comes to me for our breed is SA - only around 3000kms or so from where I live! I have a cattle farm and two small kids - but of course they should miss out because I HAVE to go to specialties!
-
ANd that may well be the case, if it is great

I do not see any harm in letting them try either, Opening studbooks makes me go as well! I do see though that if that was shared through the general public even more people than do it already will say " Oh but they are Labs they just get fat, there is nothing we can do" I do not breed Labs or have owned one, however I have seen MANY during my years in vet hospitals and there has been a mix of overweight and perfect weight ones, and some overweight ones that became perfect weight dogs. The main things they had in common were people who thought they were hungry therefore needed to be fed, thought they were only happy when eating, couldn't resist puppy dog eyes or couldn't bring themselves to cut their food back as the dog wouldn't like them any more. If you got owners who were commited and knew their Labs would literally eat anything all of the time, they lost weight and maintained it. It guess it is also a side effect of taking a working dog and sticking it in a back yard without enough exercise and work and then feeding them like they were working all day. People get very suprised at times when you refer to their Lab as a working dog - shame isn't it. I guess after so long dealing with overweight dogs (of all breeds) and their owners I get my back up rather quickly as many would argue until they were blue in the face that it is not their fault and they feed the dog hardly anything. Then you find out they have dry food down all day, get a piece of toast at breakfast, biscuits, whatever. Or even that they just feed way more dog food than a dog of that breed size requires. Sometimes I just wanted to slap sense into them
-
Yes. Any dog of any breed, sex or desexing status will starve if not fed, or feed to lesser amounts of calories. Some breeds, sexes may be more predisposed to putting on weight or requiring less calories to maintain adequate bodyweight. However dogs will only get fat if feed to may calories for them. Each dog is an individual. If Labs are just going to be fat regardless how is it that there are some wonderful fit lean examples??? how is that working Labs are balls of muscle. They may require less calories than a breed of similar size and body shape to maintain weight, but to blame the fact they are Labs, they just get fat because they are Labs is a cop out. Fed correctly Labs can be as lean as the next dog.
-
If dogs are not fed they starve if they are fed too much they get fat. Blaming the way the Lab is bred for getting fat is just ridiculous. They will not be fat if fed correctly ( and exercised) for the individual dog. Blaming DNA is a cop out.

My Dobe spoke Wookie very fluently! Rommi's is a cross between a wookie and a siren! Lewis doesn't talk.

Advice Needed (changing An Adult/adoptee Dogs Name)
OSoSwift replied to Kazhak's topic in General Dog Discussion
I am with you on changing that one! Start using his new name and give him treats when he looks at you when you say it, in two days he will respond - especially if the treats are super yummy -
It sounds like incontinence to me, especially if she is asleep and she has no idea unti she wakes up.

Dangerous Dog On The Loose - Thornleigh, Nsw
OSoSwift replied to Her Majesty Dogmad's topic in General Dog Discussion
Oh no - hope he is found soon before any other dogs are injured because I am quite sure he will kill one eventually. -
Concussion and a HUGE haematoma on my eybrow that hung down infront of my eye! Sprained cruciate, teeth holes, bruises right down the length of my calves, from nail scratched while swimming, that took ages to go away and hurt like hell! Many bruised Knees, shins and hands. My friends takes the cake a little though. Had her GSD off lead at the beach, looked behind and marvelled at the exquisite picture that was her GSD opened out at full speed. Turned her head for around 20 seconds and GSD leaped at her at full speed from behind hitting her at hip height, face first into firm sand breaking her arm right up at the ball end of the bone. Cat scan a few weeks later revealed the ball is in around 5 to 6 pieces and that a full shoulder replacement is probably the best way to go! OUch!

Need a like bitton. Many people I know have become pedigree dog owners after starting with an unrego'd purebred or crossbred. Some of this states best trialers, trainiers and handlers started off with associate dogs, now many have rego'd pedigrees and are breeders themselves.

Has Anyone's Dog Ever Eaten Ratsak?
OSoSwift replied to ruthless's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I am suprised the vet didn't get her to vomit, it is usally the first thing they do even if it is hours later. It really depends on the dose they ahve eaten. Generally they are okay as long as they are kept very quiet, but occassionally if they have eaten a decent sized dose Vit K alone is not quite enough. Best bet keep her VERY quiet, check the colour of her gums regularly, keep an eye out for behavioral changes abd fatigue -
Oh and I know of a couple of people who have had challenges refused. Jusges opinion on the day. If they believe the dogs deserves the points, then they do.

I travel 475kms to a small country show, and 750kms to the city. To fly to anotehr state I either have a flight of $300 to get to the city, thenanother flight to wherever, or a 750km trip and then a flight. I recently tried to get accomodation for two dogs two adults and two kids. IT was impossible. Luckily we ended up being able to stay in a family friends beach house. The small country show I went to earlier in the year had in my bitches class a GrCh who is also DOL dog of the year for our state. The BIS line up included 4 GrCh that I knew of, and also a couple of specialty winners. I would have been VERY happy if I had of beat that bitch and whilst not a 6 point challenge there was only 3 elidgable bitches on the day, so still a small challenge. The dog that won BIS had to beat dogs that win quite often in the city at Royals and in other states. So while you would think that the champion title I might get with my bitch would be a cheap arse title not worth counting, I would be proud of it. Oh and in the past I have taken dogs to specialties, flown to other states. Now my life is different and I do not have the money of the time to travel at least 750kms just to go to a city show. Not a very well thought out argument.

Has Anyone's Dog Ever Eaten Ratsak?
OSoSwift replied to ruthless's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have seen many dogs eat Ratsak over the years. If your dog was noticed straight away, taken to the vet, vomited and was started on Vit K then she should be fine. We have treated some that had noses running blood, bleeding into brains etc as it was not known until these signs occured that they had eaten any. Took quite a lot of money, very full on treatment and a little bit of luck and they also survived. -
Yep sounds like hormone related incontinence. There are a few different drugs available these days to deal with incontinence, Propalin and Incurine are two I can think of
