  5. I have to say that is a bit over the top, dare I say it I hung washing out, trained dogs etc. When they were very little I had a monitor- quite likely they have one as well - and she is up stairs, A child that wakes up will be heard. For Goodness sake. I am not sure if you had kids but amazingly they are more than happy even if you have to leave them while they are sleeping to have a shower or go to the toilet. Is this person expected to sit outside the door incase someone moans too loud?
  6. Whippets are not fragile to have around kids and to have a good play, but they can be a little fragile in the sense that if they run into something they may end up with a large wound instead of something minor. Both Greys and Whippets have thinner skin that tears more easily. Mine have some injuries from crashing into each other at high speed, but now if they start going silly it is brought under control quickly and we have been injury free for some time. Mainly the things they do it sprain toes. They do not smell, mine are bathed when I feel like it, they have rolled in something stinky or they have been swimming at the beach or something. As I have a parti-colour I do tend to wash them a little more often as I like the look of nice sparkly whites. Having said that they go for weeks to months between baths. They do lose a little coat when changing it, but you certainly don't notice hair everywhere. We have a leather lounge so really don't notice much on there. I do notice the odd hair or so after they have been siting on me (daily and often occurance!) I give my a good go over with a zoom groom and then I can forget about it. Sometimes they need to be done once a week at the change of season. Theya re also fairly quiet. Rommi will roo roo when happy and talk, she will be a bit vocal with yips and barks when playing but that is about it. They don't bark because they like the sound of their own voice. Lewis has barked 4 times in the time I have had him and all when very excited by balls, bunnies etc.
  7. Hello, you are right Greys and Whippets make fantastic pets. I haven't owned a Grey so will only refer to Whippets. Whippets like to run and go fast but for a short time. The rest of the time they are quite happy to lay around or just wander after you. A young WHippet pup may be a little full for your otehr girl as even though they are not really full on and hyper they will jump on and potentially annoy a smaller quieter dog. An adult may be more what you are after. I have a 5 yo and a 3 yo and they are great with the dogs, the dogs are gret with them, so in general I would say that Whippets are a good dog to have around kids, but as you would already know it takes training on the kids and dogs parts to make sure that the friendship stays a happy one. I got an 8wo Whippet puppy when I had a 5mo and a 2yo and whilst I used a puppy pen from time to time she really was one of the easiest puppies I have had. They do not jump ont he kids as it has never been encouraged or allowed, but will jump on me as I invite them to, and Rommi will jump a little on visitors as unfortunately even when I ask people to tell her to get down the ususal response is oh she is alright - very frustrating!!! Whippets do like company but if the Whippet is confined to part of the house and you go and spend time with them during the day I don't think that would be much of an issue. Keep in mind young Whippets do like to chew and are very powerful chewers for thei size, so one again an older dog may be more suitable. Whippets love comapnay and love being inside with you. You have all that covered so I think that as long as temperment is matched and possibly you get an older dog then it should work out just fine. Oh as an observation I have found male Whippets to be sookier and more people focused than the bitches, so that may be something to think about as well. They are a little bigger though. Hope that helps
  8. If that was me I would have said oh and it is just farmers to protect their stock. The next time the dog came over it wouldn't go home alive. The owner is an idiot.
  9. to be honest MOST farmers if they see a dog for the first time do not shoot it they try hard to return it as accidents happen. However a dog mauling stock that lives in the are is very likely to do it again as humans are ...welll humans! The dog may have been let out by accident, but from previous experience they ususlly just chase them around the first time they get out, it can take a little practice for them to be able to kill them (and not from just running them into the ground)and multiples. I have returned a few dogs but non have been harassing my livestock or causing any dramas apart from being on my property. One was a very scared old girl who had tried to follw her owners sons ute out of town and had made it 15kms before crawling into our she exhausted. The door got shut and locked, she got fed and had a drink and I managed to see a sheep tag she had and tracked her owner from that. I would never shoot a dog under those circumstances ever. In with my stock, dead stock different story.
  10. God I want some toffee now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  11. Yep a good reminder to people to keep your dogs home and not to let them roam. Yes terrible to see but what the farmer did was warrented. I am glad your assistance girl was a confort for you, they are very good at knowing when we need them. My neighbour has had 6 lambs taken by a dog, not eaten, just killed. As much as I love dogs if I found a dog/s killing my lambscalves etc they would not be going home. Past experience has taught me that it will happen again as people quite often don't believe you or get slack after a while, or the odd few just don't care. RIP doggies you died because your owner let you down.
  12. I had a similar issue Danielle except for we were going past a caravan park that had many long term people and allowed pet in a semi rural setting(small acreages) My horse was unflappable, but after was an idiot standing behind a large bushy tree and sicing his dog onto us for the third time from memory, I got a little peed off. I heard him, waited for it, the dog came out, I spun my little Pali round and as she had a hair trigger anyway, were off at an almost gallop pursuing said dog who was bolting, went within feet of said iodiot owner who was standing there very shocked and told him if he ever did that again not only would I report him to the ranger for a loose dog and the police for inciting an attack I would bloody well run him over. Suprisingly we never had an issue again. There were many mnay people who rode past that place and I shudder to think of the people and horses he scared and injured being a d*^khead. Thankfully my horse didn't care less, but aren't there a huge amount of idiots. If it had of been my next horse it would have lost it's head!

  14. I would also leave another message as my husband is hopeless on passing on a message or will sometimes listen to a message delete it and forget to tell me.
  15. Oh, FFS. I have been careful not to even MENTION a way of training. Let me spell it out to you: As far as I'm concerned there is NO WAY to tell what way is the right way or the best way. Was that clear? Therefore, because there is no way to tell, there is no sense in claiming that a prong collar is the best or only way to solve a problem, and there is no point in me answering questions about what I think is the right or wrong way to train some hypothetical dog I have never laid eyes on. These methods debates are the equivalent of a bar fight. People only get into them for a bit of biffo. No need to swear or yell for that matter I was asking a genuine question. Nice people skills. If the answer was yes then of course you will never agree with a prong, check chain, head halter or anything else. I was wondering if you were open to otehr methods or not, but you have answered my question quite well I think. Each dog is an individual so you cannot say any particular method is the right or only way, however I think being a little open minded never goes astray.
  16. Ours was desexed for other reasons than his allergies. He was tested and was allergic to 38 environmental allergies, which also includes horse hair, bacteria that naturally occur in the environment, horse hair and flys, mozzies etc. He is also allergic to eggs, beef, has an intolerance to lamb and chicken, wheat, any dry food containing artificial colourins and preservatives but luckily does well on Roo. One biscuit from a bag or Pal dog food and he will rip his hair off in hours. He has also gone out to the toilet been out of my sight for literally 30 seconds and come back covered in hives with a swelling face. He is allergic to most of our trees, weeds and grasses. He improves at my mums which is 500kms away. He is now on every second day cortisone for his arthritic spine so his skin is not too bad but he is still a little itchy from time to time.
  17. I don't know anyone who would have one around here to try on myself but I would like to so then I know exaclty how it feels.
  18. RIP Lara, forever young now. I am quite sure you are showing all the dogs up there how to do excellent obedience with the odd trick thrown in just to keep the judges on their toes. Hugs to you and your family Ptolomy
  19. Out of interest Corvus do you think your way of training is the best way and everything else is not???? I only ask as it seems that as far as you are concerned only your way is the right way. I have never used a PP collar, never needed to. I have used Check chains in the past and I don't use them now, infact quite often I use nothing around my dogs neck at all. SO I have no particluar self interest in either the promotion of or non-banning of them. However there are dogs out there that may not respond your style or type of training. If you came across one of those dogs, what would you do? How would you cope with a dog that just didn't respond to your type of training? I train my dogs the way I do because it works. If and when it doesn't I will then seak a differnt way to go or answer. I do not want anyone telling me how I can train my dog. I want to be able to have the access if required to a tool that will help me. Oh and interestingly with these type of emotional arguments some people would in fact prefer the dog to be dead than do what may be necessary. Our local vet will not under any circumstances de-bark a dog, even if the person will euthanase it. I asked the straight question - Would you prefer to see the dog dead than do debarking surgery, the answer was yes. SO using the argument if we ban PP collars then dogs may die because otehr methids may fail, there answer will still be it should be banned because they would rather see them die than use something that that person see's as cruel even if they are wrong.
  20. Where abouts are you?? Probably the best bet would be to email Sherel - I will track down her email, and she can tell you who is a distributor close to you. ETA - here you go Sherel Money Ph: 0400311139 [email protected]
  21. I feel like I remember a thread like that. Was it this one: http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/139457-are-prong-colars-illegal-to-sell-in-nsw/page__p__2787547__hl__%2Bimport+%2Bprong+%2Bcollars__fromsearch__1#entry2787547 No two ways to interpret that... There are always going to be conflicts in interest between welfare and control/safety, I think. Take horse bits, for example. ANd this was K9's response. Don't see him telling anyone how to illegaly import PP collars??? DO you??
  22. Black Hawk holistic Adult Lamb and rice, rice is a grain of course, so do you mean wheat and corn free or all grains?
  23. A lot of previous German Shepherd owners become Anatolian Shepherd owners, although there's more to each breed than noble, handsome good looks Gorgeous Anatolians Lilli. One day.....one day I will add one to my pack - I love them :D
  24. I rang AAE freight was $350, rang Jetpets freight was $235, rang Dogtainers and freight was $150. The breeder dropped the dog and crate off at the AAE terminal, I picked him up at this end. Only difference was I rang a company and paid them and got it lots cheaper. Customer service was good with both. Next time I will call Wayrod :D
