Teaching Personal Space
OSoSwift replied to Stressmagnet's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Worst broken ankle I have ever seen was caused my tripping over a Mini Daschie. Some very good ideas already. Hope you are not suffering too badly -
Desexing can cause or increase some cancers. So its not a magic bullet. Yes Pyometra - especially in older bitches is a valid issue. Just because your dog is desexed younegr does not mean it will never get mammary cancer but the chances are reduced but a lot. I have had entire dogs of various breeds adn sexes over the years and haven't had an oops litter yet. Yes it can happen but a vast majority of oops litters are from ignorance, can't really be bothered trying to hard to keep them apart or I only took my eyes off them for a minute. Yes split, silent seasons, kids and husbands can sometimes create oops litters.

I would open the door when he wakes me up, in the crate and door shut. He will figure it out pretty quickly. I teach mine to go to their bed as well and as babies will tether them and have rewards I can lob onto their bed when they stay there.

I really don't see how you would need permission. It is like a large kennel, you obviously have permission for the dogs so this is their house. It is not attached to anything or going to damage anything. I would wonder why they would say no if it is liekly it will result in potential less damage than say bored dogs left to their own devices.

Well they have Whippets as being dumb so should I get all uppity?

What a load of uniformed drivel. - The chart that is, DOLers are an intellegant lot :)

I have three entire males. No issues with fighting, marking inside or anything. Why should I desex them? One had Suprelorin for a medical issue at one stage and his temperament was awful. Totally horrible and I never want to have to deal with that again. My bitch is desexed as I believe in desexing once they have finished having their babies or are too old to breed. I have previously had a bitch with Pyo and I do have to say from a totally selfish point of view it is easier having her desexed with the three boys and having to deal with the hormones and keeping them all separated

I'll talk to the vet but as I said, she's just been sick again. Bugger

If she is amenable to handling then sub cut fluids from time to time might help a lot by not only maintaining her hydration but taking the pressure off both of you.

I've never been told about this syrup exists . Hopefully Miss Mini is feeling better. Its what they give babies and easy to gte

Kinf of off topic My MIL talks about having an emergency stop for her dogs back when my hubby was a kid. It was halt (i think) and it = do not move another inch. She credits it saving a human kids life one day when they nearly got hit by a car And it was the first thing she thought/yelled :) I yelled stop, sit at my then bolting 2yo once. It worked admirably. The lady lookign on looked like she wasn't sure whether to be impressed or horrified! My Dobe had a particularly good instant down, then I redirected, so recall, stay, whatever. My Whippets don't as I have never taught it too them like I did to her.

Oh so many stories from my vet hospital years.............. Mummies little seal point Princess mummies girl baby cat who came in to be speyed...... and went out castrated. Why did you think it was a girl? It had nipples. I brought my dog in to be castrated 3 months ago and you didn't do it, you left his balls behind......double check, definitely no testicles in the scrotum.......Owner flips him over......there see right there..........Okay that is his bulbous Glandis and it means ummm he is a bit excited. His testicles were down there............ I need my dog looked at I think there is something wrong with him, his pee comes out near his bottom not from his tummy..............your dog is a girl, their vulva is situated down there ( grab female dog owned by clinic staff member to show it is in fact normal) .............Oh are they different?, I thought they were all the same............yes she had children of her own. You would have thought she figured out males and females were in fact different............. I am not sure why my cats keeping falling pregnant and having kittens, they are locked inside...........Don't you have an entire Tom at home?.........Well yes but he is their brother and son, he would never do that..............sigh.......... Many many many many cats who came in to be speyed that went out castrated, too many to mention. Part of the admit procedure for a cat desexing want to inspect rear end of cat and look to see if a boy or girl. It only became a bit tricky once when a boy cam in but had bilateral retained testes :)

I have a formal recall and an informal recall. Both mean I want you here now as fast as you can but with the formal recall I train for very straight close sits, the informal means I want you here fast but sitting doesn't matter as long as I can get my hand/s on you.

My thoughts exactly

Our money raised from our local walk goes to local organisations/rescues so i will be doing it. I cannot stand the RSPCA however

I would not feed Horse to my dogs, I own them and it is not something I have ever been exposed to. I guess its what you are used to. I bought some Donkey once and it was a really hard moreal decision to make. Its still in the dog freezer and needs to be thrown out. I have pet sheep and cows but will happily consume beef and lamb and feed it to my dogs. I will not however eat anything I have raised and named, nor will I feed it to my dogs. I guess the difference - to me - is horses are not raised commercially here for meat they are companion animals like dogs and cats. I have now had to bury two horses on my property. I am lucky I can without a risk of contamination etc They are buried deeply so as not to risk anything consuming them as they were give Lethabarb.

Incorrect Cruciate Diagnosis
OSoSwift replied to Canisbellum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I hope your hand is going okay and your boy is not too traumatised by his attack. Unfortunately sometimes you just have to wait and as I say - it will come out in the wash. Not always a way I am happy to do things, but none the less, a way that is sometimes the only way, unless you have a money tree. Sometimes even then its a wait and see what happens and wait until it shows up more, longer etc -

I have seen a number of dogs manipulated under sedation - whilst being x-rayed - and they will show pain unless the pain is very minimal. My bitch showed pain even under sedation and hers was not a complete rupture. -

There are some very competant vets in Esperance who can perform various types of surgeries for knees. They did a TTO on my Whippet. I agree it probably needs a further work up and it is very stressfull when these things are happening and you can't find out why. I hope your hand heals very quickly -
Endless barking dogs totally get on my nerves!!!! My neighbours dog was around 1km away and if the wind is slight but in the right direction it would wake me up. It could bark underwater wiith its mouth full of peebles. I am sure it never slept. It died early, I truely cannot say I was upset by that. I would hear them yell siddown, I would would yell back - It can still bark with its f'ing arse on the ground! I have no issue if a dog barks, then shuts up, barks at soemthing else shuts up - that is normal dog barking. Continuous, relentless. loud monotonous barking is not and it drives me completely mad!

The medication may work beautifully but no medication is without potential side effects. Many people do not have the means or desire to confine a bitch in season, I have no issue with that, they should then be desexed. Spey incontinence is extremely common and far more annoying that it first may appear, especially if you have a large dog, it is not cheap if you have a larger dog
-
Rubbish. A season yes. A litter no. Get the dog desexed if they can't make sure she will not get mismated. There are benefits to desexing a dog after maturity.

Thank you all :)
