My understanding of it is potentially any dog can get bloat and or tortion, but some breeds are more highly predisposed to it than others. IT is the shape and depth of the chest that is the main factor. As a "general" rule Whippets are unlikely to get it because although they have a deep chest it is narrow compared to sat Daschunds, Dobes Rottie etc which tend to have a more rounded ribcage. My old Dobe had bloat and tortion 3 times in her life and that was one of the reasons I moved away from the breed as I was always living on a knifes edge. Making sure if they needed to be dog sat it was with someone well versed in symptoms and what not to do etc. On Whippet World I am sure there have been people who have had or known of Whippets having had tortion, although it is unusual. The statement that a dog under 30kgs can't get it what a load of crap, my Dobe was 29 to 30kgs, Standard Poodles can suffer from it and I am quite sure the bitches would often come in under 30kgs.. If she is not happy take him to another E-Vet. Hope he is okay. FIngers crossed from us

bran on a bone protects the stomach from bone fragments - hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm I would do as RSG suggests. Choose basically the type of meat the use ie beef, lamb chicken etc if you wanted you could get some supercoat then swap over but I would be inclined to go with something better from the beginning

Attention Gsd, Rotties And Dobe Owners
OSoSwift replied to german_shep_fan's topic in General Dog Discussion
I generally am not prone to hysteria which people worried about this have been accused of. However where there is smoke there is fire and well I am very concerned as we all have had it proven time and time again you cannot trust politicians. -
So basically you can argue until you are blue in the face your Am Staff is just that but if you do not have rego papers or a vets letter they are automatically a Pitbull. From what I can tell vets are going to be VERY reluctant to sign a letter to say the dog is not a pitbull when really who can tell for certain just by looking. If you do not regsiter them as a Pitbull - and why would you as they are not- If a ranger comes along and tells you they are a P Bull and they win if it is contested, the dog is euthanased because after Sept 30 there will be no more dogs allowed onto the restricted dog register. I am sure those who have rescued or un-registered Am Staff's ( and other dogs that look remotely like a PIt Bull or Am Staff) are absolutely beside themselves. I would be.

hmmmmmmm I would not feed that, apart from the fact it is waayyy too complicated it is not a balanced diet. I would feed what they have been feeding to a point, but would not worry about weetbix or dried fruit etc, And I definately would not feed Supercoat

Seriously.. It's Humans Who Wreck Dog Park Fun For Dogs
OSoSwift replied to W Sibs's topic in General Dog Discussion
I seriously think that people that do things like that are just bloody minded. I pay my rates so I will take my dog into the non-dog park they are having a picnic in - see now that wouldn't go down well. I am quite sure there are people who would happily have their BBQ and co-exsist and I am sure there are people that try to keep their dogs away - but geez, have a few brains if you don't like dogs don't go to a park that allows off lead dogs - it isn't hard!!!! Yes they have every right to be there, but while it is an area that allows off lead dogs, so do I and my dog!!! Some people just want to be a pain in the arse no matter what the senario! -
God it gets worse - I didn't think that was possible................

what a potential disaster!! So far our state is not implementing anything unless it becomes federal law - thank god, but I know it is only a matter of time

One powerball and I will build and maintain the perfect dog park, and because I will own it I can ban anyone not picking up poo or allowing their dog to pick fights or annoy crap out of others. Hopefully I am rich enough to set up one in each state : D -
I said something along the lines of by buying a PF puppy you are condemming many dogs to a life of suffering in cages to produce more puppies like yours. Due to the the fact she is buying a DD there will be other people who follow suit and all it will do is increase suffering and asked if she was familiar with Oscars Law and if not maybe she should read up on it.

although it is a park they can use and have every right to, I mean really having a BBQ in an offlead dog park when you are scared of dogs????? Pretty stupid. Did anyone actaully have a quiet chat to them and explain that this park was where people are allowed to have dogs off-lead and sometimes a dog may just run up to them considering they have a yummy BBQ. Surely there are other parks close by they could visit where there were no off lead dogs?? -
Not really sure you will find one. Lurchers are more an English thing. Not even sure exactly what breeds go into them, varied ones from what I understand. I haven't ever heard of one, but since I am on the other side of the country then there may well be some over there somehwere.

I can feel the chips in my Whippets but it is easy to tell it is the chip. Most likely a vaccine reaction

How Do You Know When The Time Is Right
OSoSwift replied to nattiej1976's topic in General Dog Discussion
I lost my very special girl, had a baby 7 weeks later and had a major issue. Then when my baby was 5 months old and I was sliding into depression a puppy became available. I wrestled for some time wondering if it was the right thing to do (I tend to be an over thinker) in the end I said yes and Rommi arrived - the best thing I could have done for myself and she was the major reason I started to climb back up out of a dark void. I still cried for my girl lost and honestly still do even 5 years later from time to time. Sometimes things just slid into place and you will find the prefect dog may not be exactly where you were looking, or maybe shows up sooner than you thought. Hugs and good luck, it is scary and emotional but if it is right it will all come together. -

Unable To Keep Dog Thats Under A Contract
OSoSwift replied to pinkpuppy's topic in General Dog Discussion
seriously I have not just thrown my dog in the backyard, I show her most weekends!!!!!!!!!!!!! I dont know why you are making such a big deal out of not being able to care for a dog anymore???...I could do so much WORSE than just ask for the breeder to pay for the dog LIKE I DID! If money isnt an issue WHATS THE PROBLEM??? showing or not has nothing to do with being a responsible dog owner or not. Many people genuinely cannot care for dogs and rehome them, that I do not have an issue with. I do have an issue with someone who has a dog for a short time and is, within a few short months, trying to figure out how to get rid of her without having to lose $2500. The first concern is not what is best for the bitch or getting her back to her breeder your first thought is how to get out of a contract so you don't lose money. Add to that the reason you are rehoming is because she barks and digs, but you have done little, including increasing her exercise, to try and rectify her issues. At this point you are far more interested in your money than the welfare of a dog you are supposed to love. Yeh right! -

I didn't go on about NOT giving the money back, I said I would give back probably up to most if not all of it just to get my dog back from you. To be honest the breeder probably will once she gets wind of this thread and the person you really are and how her poor dog is being treated and the fact it is going stircrazy -
Unable To Keep Dog Thats Under A Contract
OSoSwift replied to pinkpuppy's topic in General Dog Discussion
Honestly the breed deos matter because I am quite sure all the Rotti breeders that have seen this will now be on the look out incase you contact them. You got a Rotti and threw it in the backyard - what the hell did you expect would happen? I LOVE Rottis and to think this bitch is in a back yard going mental becaue you are clueless makes me very upset. You signed a contract you want to back out of becaue all or a sudden due to your laziness it is now too hard. Why in the hell would you think ANYONE would be at all sympathetic to your plight? Give the breeder a call, the dog world is a small place this will get back to them and it will be figured out. It will not go down well. People like you are the reason so many dog breeders feel the need to have cast iron contracts in place and are so very picky where their beloved puppies go. You should be ashamed of yourself - call yourself a dog breeder, well please do not put yourself in with me becauce you are not a responsible person you are a disgrace. -
Low Income, But Still Want Pet Insurance..
OSoSwift replied to Aztec Gold's topic in General Dog Discussion
I send mine off with a copy of the invoice. I have a monthly account at the vets so put in with the pet insurance company before it is paid. I thought as long as the vet is happy for you to do it you can??? We mine let me anyway. I did a quote for a phantom Whippet just recently adn the premium with Petplan was around $453 and previously it was $417. The annual cover had gone from $9000 to $10000 (budget) The main reason I like it is they are covered up to you yearly maximum for any health condition. Some only cover a condition to the maximum amount and then they do not cover that particular condition any more. This way if I had a dog with a skin complaint that cost a reasonable amount I can claim up to my $10000 each year, not just up to $10000 total and that is it.
