RIP little man Hope your other little bub heals and is much stronger tomorrow

I wouldn't imagine so. Apart from the scarring on the site of incision? And of course the risk of undergoing anesthesia. Why would you consider both? Initial to prevent breeding and secondary to adress behavior? They still have seasons and will mate so have to be treated like an entire bitch in that respect and they can also still get Pyometra

Just A Heads Up. They're Back! It's Snake Season Again
OSoSwift replied to LizT's topic in General Dog Discussion
Thanks for the information went to your site and read the stuff there which is useful. I am afraid of your friends but was interested in the dry bite comment. Why is that the case? Generally unless you are food they strike at you to get you to back off. They won't waste their venom unless you are food or a danger to their life. If you or a dog hassles them then they will envenomate because their life is in danger. Young snakes are more likely to envenomate as tend to be more defensive -
Thank goodness, they did take their time getting it to you!!! Glad they like it

I would probably leave this one and ask in there as well I would imagine bloodlines etc would play a part, is he from lines that mature more slowly? His breeder may be able to help you out there

Is there an issues from desexing down the line if a Tubal ligation is done when they pup is young, and then desexed when older. As in from adhesions and scaring causing the surgery to be more difficult. I would imagine not, but just wondering.

Why Do Sighthounds Tend To Be Timid/sensitive?
OSoSwift replied to corvus's topic in General Dog Discussion
Anyone who'd say that many sighthounds aren't willing to take risks has never seen them after prey. Ah yep, seen my dogs go through the odd fence, most electric but it was worth it when they had their eye on the ptize. In normal day to day life they will not go near that fence for quids, -
Why Do Sighthounds Tend To Be Timid/sensitive?

Agree with all of this. Our hounds are behind a second gate because otherwise, visitors can't get to the back door for the mob of excited greeters who seem to believe every visitor is for them :p And as far as being wary about hurting themselves.. if they were, my vet would see a lot less of me One current foster has almost injured himself horribly a few times. One involved galloping directly into a door frame (he'd been playing with a toy and was having a bit of a crazy run around). He turned his head at the last moment and just bruised up his shoulder but it could've been a lot worse if he'd hit it head-on. In my experience, their sense of self-preservation is a bit.. lacking. Ah yes I fully agree with this and it seems my friends Whippets are also the same -
Oh wow she snuck that in didn't she!!! Hope all goes well, quickly and stress free

Why Do Sighthounds Tend To Be Timid/sensitive?
OSoSwift replied to corvus's topic in General Dog Discussion
timid? - nope. Disinterested, aloof, sensitive - yes. I have one who doesn't care about other dogs or people much. He is very sensitive and can hold a grudge if he feels he has been wronged (step on his foot hard and pay for it for over two months!!) He says hello to people but is not waggy and overly excited about it. He only takes noticed of other Whippets. He is a velcro dog and would get inside your skin if he could The other, is a pat-me tart, loves everyone and sill sit on anyones knee for a cuddle. She roo roos and is a little jumpy and all over people. Will play with other dogs and will happily tell them off if she feels wronged. She is reactive as in if she thinks you are about to trip over her she leaps out the way. She likes pats and cuddles but will happily lay next to you on the lounge instead of ontop of you. Yes when they are meeting random people they quite often stand with their tails tucked under, but they do that alot anyway. If your sample included say lots of Whippets or lots of another sighthound then I would expect your results may have been different. -
I'm So Excited! And I Just Can't Hide It!
OSoSwift replied to Ness1409's topic in General Dog Discussion
How exciting for you. I am sure there will be leaking eyes when you pick them up :D -
Congratulations to you and Lottie very well done

Oh will definately look out for that one - super cute :D

I too am very perplexed as to why you are considering them, I certainly wouldn't foster a breed that I had so much negativity towards. Maybe fostering Weims would be the way to go?

OUr laws also state that Greys are not allowed off lead and have to be muzzled in public. We have quite a few down here and the rangers are very relaxed, some wear muzzles some don't and most of them are exercised off leash. The ones I know have a very good recall but didn't when they first got them. One was a GAP greyhound (originaly) who this person saved from the local pound and she had lots of security issues and was a stressed little girl but has come out of shell nicely and has a very good recall.

The ROMA title is not an officially recognised title - ie - not awarded by the ANKC. This is no way suggests that I don't like it - think that it is a fabulous thing to acknowledge that the individual animal has had an impact on the breed. Yep - with Shetland Sheepdogs - it is awarded by the club - I think the historian for the NSW club has all the records. Dogs need to have sired 10 champions, bitches 5 champions. so a ROM with Dobes is obviously a bit different to a ROMA for a shetland sheepdog? Yep there is no breeding requirement. They do have to be a minimum of 18 months of age to do the WAC part. Was very interesting to watch them do it. They have to be steady with strangers, strange noises (gun shot, suddenly shaking can of pebbles, an umbrella opening in their face) and footings ( mesh, caavas over grass) and act appropriately with an agitator- Ie not back off and try to flee but not over the top aggressive either. They must also calm withing a set amount of time after the agitator "flees"

Thanks for those links ST - I am interested :D

Great photo. Enjoy your Tassie holiday

My Dobe had a ROM To get their ROM they have to have their Champion title, at least a CD title, and their WAC - or working aptitude title which is a temperment test (you can google it) I believe she was the 41st ROM since it's inception.

Sorry to hear that Jules and hope she improves and stabilises very soon
