Mine don't tend to play with dogs outside their pack, but they do see lots of otehr dogs on a regular basis and I guess I tend to neutralise them to the other dogs. They are not at all worried about them, but don't care if they are there or not. Rommi is more likely to go up to a dog and say hello, Lewis only talks to Whippets!

It is quite easy to see why the dog world can never be united in any subject other than ones' own self interest when comments are made that show an obvious disregard for fellow exhibitors. I can only begin to imagine the uproar if I took my full in season bitch onto a ground being used for obedience etc.Apart from the obvious problems caused by both actions I would like to think that we would all show some consideration to fellow dog people. Then maybe Ive' been bought up wrong. Yes but Obedience schedules and rules all state that a bitch in Oestrus can not be present. No such ruling for conformation shows. At the shows I go to there is. The obedience is around 20 metres from the show rings. While they ask people not to take their bitches into the areas roped off, they can and do walk all around the area toileting dogs. They are male and female and I am quite sure there could be bitches in seaon amongst them. All the obedience schedules I have seen have said no bitches in oestrus. Even had vets check them at one weekend in SA. But never seen the rule on a confirmation schedule and never seen a dog vet checked at a confirmation show. We have a show weekend coming up soon with three shows. At the same weekend the local obedience club is also having a three trial weekend at another oval. We were looking at combining the two clubs for the one weekend as it could benefit both events but for this very reason we didn't Yes you are right you are not allowed to trial a bitch in season and yes they are checked, but a matter of metres away there are bitches that are in season, and they can be walked right up near where the obedience dogs will be working

I recently had to have my British Shorthair cat euthed. When I went into the vets, he said "we have done a few of these together haven't we". He has euthed my 2 Dobes, my horse and now my cat. We have a very old Stafford who will no doubt be another in the next little while. I did have one cat whohad been seeing the vet for a month and went downhill quite quickly. Went from being quiet to being comatose overnight. I rang to book him for euth. When i walked in the vet who was on wanted to know if I wanted him checked over before deciding to euth. If he had of read the notes he would have known what was happening, what I had discussed with the normal vet. And also if he had of taken any notice he would ahve seen the cat was totally non-responsive. I was annoyed about that one!!!

If you have the netting and it is away from the kennels you should be fine. Also make sure you check it often as although I to am not a fan of snakes I do not like things to die slowly or be in agony. So check the neeting often so any snakes caught up can be dealt with as quickly as possible. I decided to try the snake repellers as although they may not work, well they may!! I have had two people who live not too far from me say they saw no snakes near their houses etc last year. I know of no-one who saw none, I saw around 20 - lost count after 14. So I am giving them a try if they don't work well I threw away some money, if they do - bonus!! You can get snake and mouse mesh from bunnings -6mm squares, so maybe you could run some of that around the bottom of your dog runs as well???

Both My Whippets kinda of happened at the best time I had been researching my next breed while I still had my nearly eight and a half Dobe girl, thinking I would have her until at least 10. I found a breeder, made many enquiries, asked heaps of questions and decided a Whippet would be next for us. My Dobe girl died at eight and a half after a brief illness from hereditary disease. It was 7 weeks before I had my second baby. I had contacted the Whippet breeder and put my name down for her next litter which was to be around 12 months time due to me having a new baby and having no idea what sort of personailty my baby would have - also had a not quite 2yo son as well. I had some issues after having my 2nd son and whilst at the time I didn't realise it I was suffering from depression. The Whippet breeder had a litter that was born in the January when my son was 3 months old. All puppies were sold to families on the waiting list. Then I got a email to say that a family could not have their puppy due to their childs severe allergic reaction to the puppy and was I interested in said puppy. I can tell you I agonised and debated and over thought and nearly tore myself up over that decision. In the end the answer was yes I would like the puppy. My puppy wants? a girl and a solid colour(didn't care which colour though). Less than 2 weeks later my little Rommi arrived by plane. This was the start of my climb back to normality. She gave me something to do other than washing and changing dirty nappies. She was my saviour. I had a very placid baby and a lovely placid puppy and the match was perfect. I really don't think I would have got back to where I am without that little girl. Rolling on and Rommi - then 2 - went back to her breeder to be shown at the Royal and stay while we had a family holiday. The breeder had a young male Whippet she was debating on keeping or rehoming. Rommi and him got on like a house on fire and I was asked if I was interested. I was most definately, but thought my Husband would say a definate no. I showed him some pictures and his reaction was "WOW nice looking dog". I fell in love but didn't want to get my hopes up. On the way back home we picked Rommi up and got to meet Lewis. Our first meeting was me sitting on the lounge and them coming pelting through the door. Rommi was SUPER excited to see me and Lewis was yahooing and leaping all over me as he just couldn't contain his excitment either. We decided yep we loved him, but due to having had bought some things whilst holidaying we didn't have room to pack him in the car there and then and decided a 7+ hour trip in the car at night and landing in a strange place wasn't the best, so decided to fly him down at a later date. Well the wait killed me but about a week later he flew down to live with us at just over 7 months of age. I picked him up, brought him home and apart from a little bit of crying and upset the first few nights, he settled in like he had been here his whole life. We had had him 24 hours when we had friends over for a BBQ. They could not believe we had had him one day. He was my shadow and wanted to know where I was, always only one step behind. He has been my dog ever since is/was the perfect dog to add to our family and still always only one step behind Both of my dogs came up at the perfect time when I wasn't really looking for a dog but the timing was perfect. I wouldn't have it any other way. They have also totally won over the OH who was always more a cat person. Originally they were not allowed on the lounge - his rules- now they sleep on there whenever they feel like it!! -
The King should look after his rabbits a bit better then Do you remember what country? One of the Scandinavian countries, but cannot remember exactly which one.........it was mentioned on a forum which is no longer running unfortunately or I would look it up for you Hmmmm....sounds a bit strange cause rabbits are considered pest in all three Scandinavian countries. This does not make cruelty to rabbits ok, so lure courseing with live rabbits is unlawful. I say it would be the organinser/s and owner/s who would have to take the consequenses of doing something outside the law, euthanasia of the dog/s is too far fetched. Could be a crock, but hunting the rabbits were illegal in that country, and I can only go on what I was told from the person that lived there.

Sounds good MG, nothing wrong with that at all

You can get small treats bags you either clip onto your pants or have elastic waists. I use my pockets. I bought a suit from Rockmans, very boring black, but good with Whippets, becasue it had pockets

I guess for me I don't really do it, once in very early season, but as the owner of a male I don't really think about or care that others do show their bitches in season. Obedience is VERY different to showing and what the dog is required to do is very different so I agree with no in season bitches for obedience.

IN my workplace I knew a lot of the people personally and saw the dogs outside of work. Some of them I delivered. Sometimes I could hold it together, sometimes I couldn't. If it was a friend and their dog I was a bit hopeless. I think I shed a tear more than I didn't. I am hopelessly empathetic and sometimes I wish I wasn't so much............

Out of interest I have never shown my current bitch in season and my Dobe bitch was once 3 days into her season and I did show her once. When I showed a male Dobe for a brief time he was always firing on all cylinders and looking a million bucks when there was a girl around in season, kinda like a stallion strutting his stuff to the other males. Never pulled to sniff and stacked well and I didn't own him but knew him quite well.

My male tells me from around 6 to 8 weeks out, so I know it is coming, but not exactly when. I can say she is going to come in soon, but she gets slightly swollen over the top of her Vulva for weeks before she comes in and her Vulva swells the day she comes in. So yes I know she is due to come in and I know it will be soon, but yes I can put her in the car and think oh crap potentially. She has gone from 7 months to 10 and a half between seasons so I cannot rely on dates either to help me out. She has no noticable behavioural changes before her seasons. When she is in and immediately after yes, but not before. Would I travel if she was in standing season? no I would leave her home and just take the boy - It is very hard to travel with two entire animals to shows when you don't want a mating so I wouldn't do it. If she was to arrive at a show in season it would be because she was only a day in. If it was my Dobe bitch, yes I would definately know and would have left her home. She would swell enormously around 5 days before bleeding so I knew she would start very soon.
