I agree the dog did improve in the second video and that is probably the better video shown regarding Koehler training so far. This is a youtube of a very well trained dog who is training under high distraction. He is being distracted by the things he does get rewarded with. Yes occassionally his attention does get drawn for a few seconds but he remains very focussed and does not move out of position. He is positive reinforcement trained. This persons channel also inclused youtubes of him trialling.

I am thankful to say our pound down here has come ahead in leaps and bounds of late. They do not put down any dog unless it has bad medical issues or major temperment issues. They now release dogs to SAFE - desexed prior to leaving and the fuel of the person coming to pick them up is covered (400kms each way) and they are given a donation with the dog. The also have up for approval with the shire, all dogs leaving the pound are desexed. Now I know many pounds aeround the place already desex before leaving but up until the last little while and a progressive team of rangers ours was basically a hold facility, some got kept longer to find a home but the euth rate was high and eventually their time did run out. Years ago we did at times get asked if we could keep the animals at our place or the vet hospital and they were officially impounded, ranger came out to look etc as the pound was crap and very often full. All found animals irrespective of condition and people thoughts on where they came from should be taken to the pound and scanned.

When Does Your Breed Start To "slow Down"?
OSoSwift replied to Greyt's topic in General Dog Discussion
hahahahahaha that is hilarious. Neither of mine would ever do that. I have always ahd the rule no maddies in the house htough, so that may be it. When I went to look at Lewis when he was around 7 months old he raced through the house - I was sitting on the lounge - and he landed on my head, then proceeded to leap all over the lounge kissing me................ now he just flops onto of you -
well then why do you need the corrections? IF your reward had a high enough value to your dog you would rarely if ever need a correction.

a treat can be praise, food a toy. One dog on here is allowed to go sniff and cock his leg as a reward. A treat is anything the dog has a high value for.

When Does Your Breed Start To "slow Down"?
OSoSwift replied to Greyt's topic in General Dog Discussion
Me too. Whippets have small pockets of insanity then sleep the rest of the time :D -
Okay, how about this. Dog is trained with treats (be it food tug whatever) it has a very high rate or reinforcement. The rate of reinforcement becomes variable and less often as time progresses until it does not need a treat(although I still always give a reward even if only one for 20minutes work and that with one of my dogs it is being allowed to jump on me as I am seen as one of the ultimate rewards ) They no longer need their treat often, or may only need one as they are now proofed and reliable. That treat is also not necessarily food. I am also interested why you seem to ignore posts that point out positively trained dogs that can listen and work under heavy distraction with little or no food or treats? Not what you were wanting to hear??

I do not carry food everywhere with me and my dogs are happy and very reliable, even when calling off rabbits which I think is not to bad for a Whippet.
-
good to hear you have it sorted
-
my dogs are extremely good off leash, and walking on leash and working in an animated way while trialing. They know different things are required of them in different situations. Why would you think that being positive reinforcement based people would only focus on training for competition??? Like I said my dogs do get corrections, never for competition work, they do if they are about to sniff a snake or try to chase off after wildlife. My dogs are off lead everyday in 5 acres surrounded by livestock fencing and could take off if they really wanted to chasing rabbits, roos and foxes but as far as they are concerned it is far more motivating and fun sticking around.

Should post a bedazzled, Ptolomy or one of the other wonderful vids of very motivated dogs working

A Bit Confused About What To Do With Nelson
OSoSwift replied to redial's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have come into this after the fact but I believe you did the right thing. RIP Nelson, broken no more. Waiting at the rainbow bridge -
I like cats for being cats and dogs for being dogs. We have a new rescue kitty Harry who is very cheeky and does a mean and fast recall and sit. Will work on other things when I have the time

I have to say that video does very little for promoting the Koehler method. The figure 8 makes me shudder!!!! This video show a dog at possibly a similar level using clicker training. You tell me what you see the differences as. Ignore the crap down signals !!!

Puppies, A Social Experience Apparently
OSoSwift replied to lovemesideways's topic in General Dog Discussion
I generally respond with - Not at the moment they are working. I have also sent people away from my crate with my dogs in it. Annoys the crap out of me. I have to say with the Whippets I cannot remember anyone - adults- not asking, apart from kids who I stop and remind them they should ask before trying to pat a dog they do not know. I would maybe try the line sorry not right now he is working. Or maybe you can have a pat in x amount of minutes when he has finished working. I do somehting a little similar. When we are at training my dogs do not play with any other dogs. Before, during or after. People thought I was strange but my dogs are there to work and be neutralised to the other dogs working around them. They never leave me to go say hello or play with other dogs but many of the dogs who are allowed to play do and often, even when they are supposed to be working. I can fully understand why you wish to do it on your terms and sometimes people have a sense of entitlement that they shouldn't. I would get him a harness as has been mentioned before with a tag on it to say he is working etc. And tell a white lie if you need to, he is a military dog in training or whatever works. -
I have Koelers books and have trained using his methods. I now clicker train and will only clicker train as I get a much more reliable result. Having said that I am not a clicker purist and will issue a correction if required in general every day life but as for training obedience I use a clicker and positive reinforcement and train smarter if things are not working. I go away think about it and figure how to get what I want happening. I have trained Dobermanns with both nethods and my Dogs responded much better to clicker than Koeler. One thing that really sealed it for me was training dumbell and gloves. Koeler shut my dog down, Clicker got her her CDX.

My bitch was sent to her breeders to have a litter. She was mated quite late in her season. Got her xrayed vet said no puppies. She got flow back to me, got shown (had large mammary development but she had full on phantoms so nothing unusual for her)then drove 750kms home. I felt something was different but was told I was being neurotic. Three days later at day 63 from her last mating on pup was born, luckily no issues as I had no idea she was having a baby. If I think there is something a little different or not quite right I would U/S or Xray and keep a very close eye on them as they can hide them

Christmas And The People Who Foster The Most In Need
OSoSwift replied to Little Catdog's topic in General Dog Discussion
I buy my pets things at christmas and they are not useless. I also donate to rescues and help out with donating food and lending various things to those who need it, like the crate and puppy pen I am dropping off to a lady tomorrow who has a dumped bitch and puppies coming into her care. I clip dogs for free for my friend who rescues and I donate food and treats. I am sorry but that post makes me a tad annoyed! -
What Is The Most Popular Colour In Your Breed?
OSoSwift replied to Esky the husky's topic in General Dog Discussion
There is a gorgeous rather enormous black Greyhound down here. The owner said that people will say hello to her other Greys before him. In Whippets, hmmmm don't think there is a most popular colour but the one who have a fair bit of white and flashy markings would probably be most popular. Unlike myself who said I don't care what colour the puppy is but I want a solidly marked dog so as I do not have to worry about sunburn -
I have heard of someone else in the same shire that just got a $100 infringment as well.

As you most certainly should :D
