  1. Yep you are right and I am thinking that is why, across a few different breeds, that I am yet to have a dog with a fear of storms because it is business as usual so none of them seem to be too worried about the whole deal. I have seen dogs who have been made into neurotic messes because of their owners reactions.
  2. Thank you. Yes will be using metal edging - we are in Bunnings almost daily so have seen it there and have that added tot he list. I am guessing the average Melamine you get from Bunnings is not the wet area stuff??? From memory it isn't blue which the we area stuff is - or it has blue through it anyway. Maybe I just need to look closer
  3. But will Melamine stand up to the amount of cleaning and disinfection required?? I have been pondering this in the last little while..................
  4. Not everything gets digested at the same rate so I am a little perplexed as to why it is supposedly better to feed commercial and raw seperately. Mine get a mixture of all sorts of things and we have no flatulence or poop issues or issues with upset tummies.
  5. Quite a few Whippets as well. I could add so many more than 5.
  6. Some people may have DNA for colour potentially as well. In Dobes there were 7 different colour types from memory, maybe it was 9, anyway you could have a type 1 black, so dominant black Type 2 black carrying brown type? Black carrying blue type ? Brown type ? Brown carrying fawn etc etc Not sure exactly what they all were and what number as the breeder I got mine from bred blacks and browns and stayed away from the dilutes
  7. I think - and this if from Dobe colouring, that the male is most likely a dominant black. This means any colour he goes over will be black and tan ( having said that he may not be you would need to look at the colours of previous bitches he has mated and the colours of the subsequent puppies. If he is/was a black who carried red then you would have both colours in your litter. Obviuosly they could potentialy carry the gene for dilution so blue or othr colours also or instead of. Hmmm makes sense yo me so I hope it is not to confusing. I know what I mean, someone can probably explain it better than me
  8. Nope, all Lewis's pad are pink, coupled with the fact Whippets have thinner than average pads, but we had no issues what so ever. I trained mainly on Gravel oevr sand and sand as that is what our tracks are on the farm and he had no pad issues even though the course had sections of scalps, larger blue metal type stones, hard limestone, sand and grass.
  9. hahahaha Bega - well done on thinking outside the box
  10. Geez we never have the good shops with stuff like that in them!
  11. Would you need to use a marine Varnish?
  12. There is shy and then there is a puppy that thinks humans have a higher value At our PUppy preschool we have puppy play time which is well supervised, but any puppies that choose not to partake don't have to. We have times when the more outgoing puppies are placed on leads so the - usually smaller but not always - and quieter puppies can wander around if they desire without being worried about being pounced on. That way they can approach anotehr puppy if they wish and stay the distance away they feel comfortable with. Many people think their puppy shoudl want to play and to be socilaised measn they love having close interaction with other dogs. Personally I prefer neutralisation. My oldest Whippet was a get in there and play puppy and when she was older it actually took me a bit of time to then neutralise her to other dogs and was rather painful. My younger one has been pretty much neutralised from the start and is great to work out and about as he knows the other dogs are there but has no value for them and isn't worried by them. Well one worried him and that was a rather enormous and lovely black Great Dane who polietly went to sniff him and Lewis was like WTF??? He was fine after he got a chance to observe him from a small distance. I would make sure that if your puppy is happily sitting there, that they do not have the chance to shove him in with other puppies as he could get quite worried about it. It would be far better to have the more rambuntious puppies on lead and allow him some time to wander if he wishes. If he doesn't wish too, who cares, he is not fearful or shaking he is happily sitting back not caring less.
  13. I am following as well - would love to know how Grumpy is going
  14. I have used the bunnings compost bins in all sorts of ways as well. The latest being a kitty house for a very naughty kitty. Put a panel over the top to avoid the little treasure climbing out and hurting himself. Worked a treat
  15. I am sure you can have two different people as long as the same person does both willingness tests
  16. I have seen a toy Poodle with a similar issue. He had the mucosa of his penis and sheath swabbed and it came back with quite a nasty bacteria. Reasonably longish course of antibiotics and he never had the issue again. I would be seeing a vet and asking to have the area swabbed. The Poodle was desexed and under 12 months from memory. I think that was the only one I ever knew of that had the issue as well.
  17. I admit the problems are mostly mine ie what I have trouble dealing with or not suited to my lifestyle and what I want to do by way of dog sports. I do love whippets for more than their good looks but not sure if they are robust enough for life with me. And I'm not sure how much they enjoy precision dog training eg agilty (I know some do agilty with them) but they are lovely schmoozers. My friend's pair have major health problems at the moment with stiff joints and strange lump things (cancers/cysts/fatty lumps) but they are both quite old so I guess that's fair enough. Whippets are more of a sprint dog and less of an endurance dog and I'm more of a plodder and less of a sprinter - which isn't a problem for the whippet of course. They may be an option for my next dog when I decide 22kg (current dog) is too heavy for me to lift. I don't know what frail people do when their big dog needs help getting into the car for whatever reason. Sorry to digress. I also think Pharoah hounds are gorgeous but not sure if I'd have the patience to train them. Weeellllll I am thinking that you may just have the wrong end of the stick :D Could your dog hit something solid at top speed sommersault get up and after a few minutes, act like it never happened? Could they sommersault over each or when trying to get a ball and not even miss a beat? My Dobes wouldn't have. When myself and a couple of friends have our dogs out together very occassionally such things happen - well if you run into a GR she isn't going to move! They just about have a heart attack and comment how their dogs wouldn't get up if they did the same thing. Rommi went to her first trials and gained a pass in JD and AD with a novice handler, Lewis was close but a small error once on his behalf, once on mine, cost him a pass at his first trials. They also do very well in obedience and do some very prcises work. Lewis just gained his CCD with a 97, 91 (the day after his ET) and a 97 - two first places. I am sorry your friend is having health issues with her Whippets I know a few and it is rare for them to have any major health issues. Rommi is more of a sprint dog but can also go on a 10km walk without any issues. Lewis is more an obedience dog and gained and trained for his ET easily. So yes many Whippets are more a sprint dog, but you can certainly get others who have more endurance. Anyway sorry about going OT but I had to clear those things up :D
  18. Umm what temperment, coat and health problems??????????
