Whose Dog Is It? - Owners Barking Mad In Dog Fight
OSoSwift replied to suziwong66's topic in In The News
She didn't follow correct procedure which would most likely have enabled the original owner to find his dog do the dog is his. If she had of gone through the correct legal steps the dog would be hers- simple. Oh and I am guessing the dog wasn't chipped? If so it could have been flagged as lost so if she tried to change it the note would have come up allowing him to be contacted -
My Kyk just needs a little tidy every now end again over winter. Spring summer it is weekly!

Ball Induced Eye Injury, Should I Be Worried?
OSoSwift replied to Chequeredblackdog's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Once my Whippet got hit hard by a child's swing with child in it. I yelled her name to try and get her away but it didnt work and she for some reason thought I had actually done it to her and wouldn't come near me for a bit I felt soooooo bad. Good to hear the eye is getting better :) -
What a load of piffle Interestingly my Whippet is 12 days into her 14 day crate period after orthopaedic surgery. While I am quite sure she would prefer to be leaping on the lounge, she happily comes out for her toilet break and then just as happily goes straight back in. Must tell her she is supposed to hate it. I would never crate a dog all day then all night that is extreme but I guess just coz some do, we all do. What morons!

Inside Dogs And Geographical Location
OSoSwift replied to mixeduppup's topic in General Dog Discussion
I had two Dobes that were pretty much outside dogs. They had dog runs to keep them safe from snakes and to make sure they didn't roam. I spent a good 6 hours a day with them and they both came with me to work mOst of the time. They did not miss out and had great lives. The dogs I have now spend far more time inside but do not necessarily sleep inside and if the do they are crated. When I go out they are in their dog yard/run. It does not make me a bad owner. I do not think it is good for a dog ( or human for that matter) to be inside a majority of the time If a dog has a good amount of quality time and has warm, dry bedding and a place to sleep then I do not see the issue. I choose what I choose because it works for me and I have happy healthy dogs. Someone else can choose to do differently and have happy healthy dogs -
Mine as well HD and I have also held otherwise perfectly animals to be euthed due OCD reasons and it is heartbreaking.

The reason I have asked this is, on Funniest Hime video's there was a video of a young Kelpie chasing, catching and holding his tail. My immediate reaction was, geez I would stop that, that could become a serious issue and I don't find it funny. My husband thought I was strange and said most people see it as completely normal and funny. My reasons are I have seen dogs that become OCD about it, some that have self mutilated their tail to the point it had to be amputated and one dog who could not live a normal life due his complete addiction to tail chasing and even after amputating his tail he was euthanased on humane grounds. I never encourage a dog to chase their tail - ever, and if they do it is immediate redirection. What are your thoughts? Am I strange or do others feel as I do?

Sluggish & Stiff(ish) Gait - Please Help
OSoSwift replied to Wobbly's topic in General Dog Discussion
Hmmmm could it possibly be she has hurt her back with all the swimming or pulled a muscle?? I know nothing about ticks Poor girl hope she is better soon -
You are right, these drugs are potentially very dangerous and would not be released to anyone but a vet. Shooting is very quick and humane if done properly, not my euthanasia of choice but if I was a reasonable from a vet and had say a dog who had a 1080 bait then I would get the dog shot rather than put them through the symptoms of poisoning and the drive to the vet for euthanasia. We have a vet 15 kms away and if I have a cow who needs euthing they are shot with a high powered rifle standing in the paddock. If I was to get the vet out I would have to get them into a crush then they would require and IV injection - very difficult with an animal not used to being handled int hat way. In this circumstance I think the Ranger was an idiot and what he did was completely unnecessary and dangerous.

hahahahahahahaha :D

Actually Ithought they were highly unlikely to get fat myself , as my Mother-in-laws Whippet is always turning down all the treat my MIL gives her and buries them when MIL isn't looking! We always say we are glad we didn't give her a Cavalier. They do look horrendous, beer kegs on tooth picks - not pretty! Lewis would probably never get overweight, Rommi-definately would she is a pig!

Bloody hell, how lucky was that!!!! What awful terrible people. I hope they burn in hell for all eternity, they are getting far more brazen so people do need to be extremely vigilant. I agree people should not be randomly posting photos and rego's, report them to the police

Ankc No Longer Recognising Flyball Titles
OSoSwift replied to Jumabaar's topic in General Dog Discussion
But you cannot expect a title gained under an unafilliated body to be recognised on the pedigree. That is the pitfall of participating in an activity that is not offically sanctioned. My Dobes had titles that they gained that were not ANKC recognised but were highly regarded within their breed. And advertising included these titles and no they were not on their ANKC pedigree but the results were easily found and verified via their national breed organisation. I am not sure why having the flyball title as a recognised ANKC title is so important when titles gained by passing temperment tests and achieving titles in at least three different areas to gain a ROM were not ANKC recognised titles but still very important for the breed and everyone coped just fine with that. By all means get the ANKC affiliation as it is great for the sport but I think using the line of it is important for the title to show up on ANKC pedigrees lacks any base. I hope it does get recognition but I also think more work needs to be done to gain that recognition. It is because the pedigree of a dog is the official record of that dogs achievements. Accordingly ALL titles it gains (na matter where they come from) should be recordable on the official pedigree that is maintained by ANKC. If it isn't on the pedigree, than in three or four generations is anyone going to remember that that dog ALSO had a bunch of other titles. The ANKC are a registry first. They need to stop being so bloody minded and difficult and do what a registry is SUPPOSED to do and register things. Affiliation or where the title comes from shouldn't matter at all. Yes they should all be recordable, I agree, however in the Dobe world there are some that are not and I can guarentee that the titles aren't "lost" after a few generations. They are listed on places like DOL profiles and quite often appear in show catalogues. So I fully agree it would be good to have all titles gained on their pedigree but it isn't the end of the world if it doesn't happen. -

There is a vast difference between a tap ont eh bum and belting , flogging or laying into your dog. My Dobes favourite game was for you to chase her bum and smack it hard, loved it. Raise your voice and she went to water, had to be rather soft with her, but smack her bum - best. thing. ever!

I have just received a new shipment and have had no issues so far but will keep my ears open

Personally I think the person with the zooming white fluffy should have had their dog on a lead or behind a fence, however due to the fact the dog did not leave it's property I don't think you have much to report. I also second the do not stop keep moving advice. When you are moving it is easier to keep your dogs attention on you. When you sit they can focus much more easily on what has peaked thier interest. If the dogs does come at you, whip your dog behind you and do what needs to be done to keep your dog safe.

Rommi is on Tramal and Metacam, she can't have Rimadyl as it makes her very unwell. The vet said oh the dose of Tramadol she is on will make her pretty dopey, but she seems quite normal, slightly quieter but normal. She has touched her toes down a few times, but I think part of the issue is the fact she doesn't walk anywhere, she trots or runs, so when she is out to the toilet she is on three legs because it is quicker. She is touching it down when she toilets and the few steps she does walk. She let out a loud scream this morning but seemed fine if a little quiet straight after, then has been normal so not sure what she did??? Her sutures look great and she hasn't even thought about licking. I am very happy with that as the vet said their isn't much covering her plate, her skin is so fine - like a rabbit. Yep one of the main reasons I got pet insurance, the tear ever so easily! I have to admit it feels good having the insurance and dropping that form in. I would be hell stressed otherwise, especially right now when I have little spare.

The prices from RSPCA WA are MUCH higher than $200. Many of the dogs are $500 plus. Wonder what would be said if a Breeder had and end of financial year sale to clear out dogs to make way for new ones????

Luxating Patella Issue (updated 7 Weeks Post Surgery)
OSoSwift replied to ness's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
So sorry to hear that Ness, there is obviously something that is making her unhappy Poor girl -
You are right, people like that have no place at shows or in the dogs world! Disgraceful

So far she seems to be going quite well. She was wigged out the first night, but been quite happy since. She isn't trying to touch her leg down yet but I am hoping that is just because she is rather soft and doesn't have a huge pain tolerance. She is on some good pain killers though. The thought she might be a bit dopey on all her pills but she seems quite sparky in that regard. She is eating well which I always take as a good sign in any dog :)
