Well done on what you have achieved.

I am always thinking ahead as to what breed etc I would might like. The serious research happens around 2 years before. Sometimes things go much quicker which knocks me a bit :) but it ends up good. Most of my dogs ahve been decided on before matings have even occured, obviously if no babies happen things get tweeked. The Whippets have been a little different though. I was looking into and researching Whippets as my next breed. I had contacted some breederds, heard back from one and was in regualr contact with her. My dog suddenly became ill and died within 4 weeks. I was 33 weeks pregnant. My breeder had a pregnant bitch, all babies were sold and I put my name down for the litter in 12 months time. I had my baby things went to crap and I really really missed my dog. I was still keeping in contact with my breeder. Well fate stepped in I had a VERY laid back baby and suddenly there was a puppy available, she was laid back as well, a solid colour and it seemed fate had stepped in. Within two weeks I had my puppy. That never normally happens as I am an over analyser. Lewis became available, I wasn't looking for a dog in particular, I went to see him and a week later he was here. Seems I take on Whippets much more quickly than I have ever taken on any other dog :)

My friend got 2 puppies from a litter just like this person is planning many many years ago. What she also got was PRA and a prematurely blind dog, 2 snapped cruciates due to extremely straight stifles OCD in hocks a deaf dog I hope they are happy to sell puppies just like these ones to people who are going to have to foot the bills and deal with the heart ache that follows.

At any age I guess, from memory 6 months. I wouldn't do it though as I would worry their growth would be affected in the same way desexing them before growth plate closure would.

Whitka, Kalgoorlie is different and the climate can be harsh. Being so far from everyone is very hard, I know I have done it myself. Can I suggest maybe going down to the dog clubs and sussing things out even before your boy gets there so you know some people and faces and know if you like them or not. I have an aunty and Uncle in Kal who are just the most wonderful people and very welcoming. If you would love to meet some great people let me know. Are you working yourself yet? if not maybe try doing a course through their uni campus (my aunty is the head librarian so you could bump into her that way) If you get down to Esperance look me up, I will give you a big hug and a shoulder and ear and we can do coffee.

Stopped A Dog Attack This Morning...
OSoSwift replied to Ruin Maniac's topic in General Dog Discussion
I would report it myself. As much as I would hate any dog to be euthanased the dog has shown on more than one occassion that it will try to attck dogs that if no-one intervenes could end up badly for the dogs it is attacking. The owner can apologise all they like, the fact is their containment for a known dog aggressive dog was not adequate and the dog got out. The only reason there was not more damage to those small dogs was that you intervened. Thank fully you didn't get accidentally bitten or bear the brunt of re-directed aggression. It does also show that dogs can be terrible with other dogs but great with people. HAving a dog like that is a big responsibilty and they do not seem to be taking that resposibilty seriously. There cannot be a mistake and oh the dog slipped out the door. I am guessing due to you calling the council for details they will have already potentially be on the case as they dog is classed as dangerous and shouldn't be at large. I think of me walking my Whippets, an incident like that can kill a smaller dog very easily as they don't have much protection. All it takes it one canine in the wrong place and they are dead. -

For Those That Have Used The Suprelorin Implant
OSoSwift replied to OSoSwift's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Oh well at least the object of his desire isn't a person!! Poor Zac hehehe yep I would get him tested anytime if his testicles are back. Lewis would mate and tie in March do probably a good 6 months before they were back to normal size, but he was far more whingey and annoying last time :) -
For Those That Have Used The Suprelorin Implant
OSoSwift replied to OSoSwift's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I got told that 60days after the implant has worn off they will produce viable sperm. I guess apart for actually testing testosterone levels the only other indicator would be testicle size as the lack of testosterone shrinks them. Any vet can get a sample and check out numbers etc etc but I would be thinking going to a repro vet would be the best idea. They quite often also have teaser bitches they can get in so you don't have to find your own. If his testicles are normal size, I would wait around 60 from when you think they are normal size then get a sample. -
For Those That Have Used The Suprelorin Implant
OSoSwift replied to OSoSwift's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
So he has been 15 months now. I was told the implant wears off in 12 months and it then takes 60 days to be producing viable sperm- obviously it has in many cases taken longer. Hopefully it won't be too much longer for him. When Lewis's testicles started getting bigger they did it very quickly -
Also from a poll a while ago the very vast majority of DOLers were female :) Great to see more men coming in to say hi, there are a few blokes among us

I have never trained mine as such, but we have in the due course of moving around the property come in contact with snakes - they are never out without me. T o be honest I have very soft dogs, if they happent o be near a snake or even looking at one trying to figure out what it is, my reaction is to yell their name - rather loudly and strongly (imagine a human with a holy crap that snake is close kinda panic)then leave it even stronger and so far they all go holy crap and move away quickly, as do I. I then call them to me and praise them lavishly for one leaving it then two coming to me. Not sure if it is actually training them but so far they may pause but they skeddadle very quickly and we had one who would wait until the snake went over the pathway or went around it if there was one in his way. I wouldn't bet their life on it, I just hope like hell it never gets tested really.

I agree a full medical work up is always the place to start when you have any sort of issue such as you have experienced. Many times there are no medical reasons but it is not fair to a dog to be trying to fix a behaviour that is only showing due to pain/discomfort. Personally I like to the use the method that gets the best result with the least amount of going head on - if that makes sense. Start down work up. No point going out guns blasing if a water pistol will work. The very best of luck with your girl. Kathy may be deemed Namby pamby by some but her results speak for themselves. To the OP my husband has alway had some "issues" in relation to our dogs. there has never been any aggression shown but the Dobes always looked to me without fail and literally told him to go abg his head on many occassions. The Whippets will listen.....in their own time. Pretty much without fail they have all listened to me the first time. Occassionally they would check to make sure the rules were the same as the day before - the Dobes mainly - but I am the one they see as the person to listen do. That is most likely because I have trained, fed and done most of the day to day stuff with them and the possessor of all the good stuff in life, so that would be natural. Oh I tell a lie, once when my Dobe had a puppy - yes just one - my OH went to touch the said puppy when she was around a week old. He got "bitten" firmly but the skin wasn't broken and she growled first. I could climb in and out and sleep in there and she didn't care less, infact she used it to catch up on her sleep :) I told him he should of listened the first time she told him to back off. She never did it before or after that time.

Yes you can get Pindone Oats for Rabbits and yes it kills more than just the rabbits. It works much the same as ratsac does. At least doing the gasing they are targetting the species that is the issue.

I have seen many dogs with bait poisoning and it is a horrendous way for anything to die. This option sounds much better. I have not seen anything about it causing pain either
-
Just because i believe I show the leadrship roll does not mean I alpha roll, or work on the theory I have to dominate my dogs. I am incontrol of all things good. If they want to get the good stuff they fall in line with my rules and boundries. I don't care what you call it, it works and we are all happy :)
-
Not sure what I call it but they way I see it is someone has to be in control of setting the boundries and ensuring they are followed. If it isn't the human or the human is wushu washy about it then the dog sets those boundries. Quite often when that happens things get a bit messy as what is considered appropriate to a dog isn't considered appropriate to a human. So in my house I set the rules and enforce the boundries. Yes between the dogs change depending on what it is they want etc or if one is sick, in season etc, but at the end of the day what I say goes. Don't know what that makes me but I guess a leader is not a bad word for it???
-
Sorry wild thing but you have no idea. Good to see they have a much more pleasant way of euthing theses guys than baits. Now those foxes I feel sorry for.

Yep contact Kathy's ASAP, she is brilliant and will get you back on track

Titre Testing Instead Of Annual Vaccinations.
OSoSwift replied to mixeduppup's topic in General Dog Discussion
Thank you :) I am suprised the amount of kennels operated/run by people that have no idea about many dog related things. I try to keep up and have learnt about heaps of things via DOL :) -
