Dog aggression and people aggression are NOT the same thing. What triggers a DA dog is not the same as what triggers a PA dog. I own a DA dog and you could not find a dog who is more calm and gentle around people, there is not an ounce of people aggression in him. It's dumb to argue that the way we raise, socialise and train our dogs has no impact on their temperament. Considering that the vast majority of aggression in dogs is fear based, how many dogs do you think are simply born that way? Are you saying that even if a pug was mistreated from eight weeks of age or younger, that they would still remain free of any behaviourial issues? I'm not trying to say all dogs are created equal - we all know that certain types of dogs are better suited to certain types of people. BUT - aggressive dogs can be and are created, every day. It's "total crap" to assume most aggressive dogs are just born that way and believing so does nothing to promote responsible ownership and serves only to lull people into a false sense of security - buy a certain breed of dog and it will just magically grow into the perfect pet, irregardless of how you raise, socialise or train it. That. Is. Total. CRAP! Ah yes, beware the aggressive pug. Souff

The breed or crosses of breed is irrelevant. A dog with this type of temperament has no place in society. Dogs are supposed to be mans (and womans) best friend ..... not be there to rip your bloody arms off! What set it off is also irrelevent. The dog is gone, and another person is badly mauled. And somewhere in Victoria or wherever today, somebody bought another dog that will end up like this one. Can somebody shine a big bright light on the morons who believe dogs with this temperament have a place in our society; perhaps put them in a situation where they end up with the horrific injuries that this woman has copped. Has anyone done a time line on the Australian Aboriginal peoples relationship with the Dingo? Would be interesting to see how it compares with the rest of the world's early places. The very-learned-folk-who-study-these-things have now realised that the dingo pre-dates the wolf, and aboriginals have had a close relationship with dingoes for a very long time. Souff

Gosh, haven't been on DOgz in ages, even struggled to remember what my password was, then I gets in here and sees all the RSPCA listings! "RSPCA left millions ..... " nah, skip that one .... likely to make Souff feel deprived. And then we have this one " ..... not enough funding". Same old story and stems from the same old stuff ..... old stuff that is often connected with things like greed and mismanagement. Nah, I am going back to turtle watching. Rats to the RSPCA, I am not going to spoil my beautiful day by reading about them. hooroo! Souff

Review Of The Rspca's Role In Prosecuting Animal Welfare Cases.
Souff replied to Steve's topic in In The News
I don't know that a review wil really will cut it, Mr Weatherill. I know, I am hardened cynic. But, it is about time all politicians in all states took a long hard look at why a charity is allowed to be a policeman; that aspect alone should be enough to keep a parliamentary committee busy for a few months. The matters of potential conflict of interests, coercion and corruption are in there somewhere methinks. Then there is the matter of being advisors to government to get laws based on extremists agendas, laws that they will be enforcing and obtaining revenue from, and yet laws that are made with key stakeholders locked out until it is a done deal in parliament. Not to mention the $90 per dog per day boarding fees for dogs that are seized, when commercial boarding kennels charge less than one third of that. Smelly concrete and wire is not the Rydges of doggy accommodation. Souff -
Good Evans, violence on DOL! Yes Jed, we are already licensed, well if I renew this year I will continue to be. The envelope arrived the other day. No, no, this is really all about getting an income stream for the RSPCA methinks .....just another fine to add to the list of fines for things like "fleas on dog". Puppy farmers will be able to claim their licence fee as a tax deduction and trade legally under the Trade Practices Act and the whole double standards matter of Federal vs State will continue, and the good breeders will still be targetted as an easy mark. Ho hum. Cant see much change happening really. Breeding those fluffy dogs for KMart is the only way to go. Souff

No docking before eating .... very bad manners!

Smacks to me of mental health issues re both of them. Glad some puppies survived. Hope they end up in good homes and not part of another 39 dogs in a junkyard. Souff

I was thinking the same things, i reaqlly cant get over that he was 14, anyone know the age of her other dog? RIP Toby! Likewise. But yes, it would be. I have a 14 year old here who was a pup at the same time and I expect he will be joining Toby in the not too distant future. If Katrina is reading this, or Toby's breeder, please accept my sincere sympathies. Cherish the great memories and the laughs - they are yours for keeps. Toby was an excellent example of his breed. 1. Regulation of breeders • All breeders should be required to obtain a government licence to breed dogs - whether they are breeding purebred, cross-bred or mixed-bred dogs, and whether they breed commercially or as a hobby. Good heavens! They stole my idea!

So much fuss about qualified vets snipping off tails on neo-natal pups ..... often tails that get broken if left long ..... ...... yet I can legally kill and EAT a dog in most states of Australia and I don't need a qualified vet to do the killing. Souff

And they breed like rabbits. For those who are worried about sentient animals being used as units of production, including the AR officer from the RSPCA if you are reading this, I would expect you to refuse to receive anti-venene treatment when you have been bitten by a deadly poisonous spider ..... after all, the anti-venene is MILKED from spiders to make the anti-venene that will save your life. If not, then take your high and mighty double standards and put em where the sun dont shine. Souff

Huh? The other dog in my newspaper has a well pigmented, black nose. The mutilated dog has a pink nose that has no pigment. Different dogs. Souff Sorry I can only view the pics online so my comment relates to those pics. Can't comment on pics in paper. Mystery solved! I have just checked the online article. The before photo in the Sunday Telegraph newspaper on page 3 is a totally different dog to the photo of the comparative dog in the online article. Just another media file photo used probably. Ho hum. And I will chain myself to a suitable edifice in support. The French may have popularised the smaller poodles and are largely credited for developing the white poodles but they are German in origin. Even the name is a derivative of the German "pudel". Now now, peace on earth and all that, can we just settle for them being "European"? I grew up knowing them as French Poodles and later got hammered many times for uttering that name, so to me they are now just Poodles. They could be found in many countries in Europe apparently. Wow! The coat of the Airedale has got me intrigued. Perhaps they shaved him before the photo was taken I love the conformation of the Bedlington too - I don't recall seeing Bedlingtons in old books before. The Scottish Terrier has also had the coat clipped so to the poster who said he had legs, yes he does, just like todays Scottish terriers have legs! The legs of today's Scottish Terriers are hidden under a very LONG coat that reaches almost to the ground. The different style of grooming gives a very different look to a dog. I much prefer the style of Shelties of yesteryear to today's specimens. They looked terrific back then. Generally speaking, the body shape of the Bassets and the Dachsies is much the same as it is today, so we cant be blamed for shortening their legs! What a lovely book. So many dogs of all sorts, and with good photos too! Thank you very much for posting it here - it's great to see old books digitised now.

Yes, I saw Roland's new puffy face in the paper this morning, his "After" photo. But ............. Where is his "Before" photo? Why use a photo of another Sharpei with different features and better pigmentation? Why not use a photo of the dog who had the problem to show the public what Roland looked like before and what the problem was? Wouldnt that be more educational? I am not saying that Roland didnt have a problem, but if we see "Before" and "After" photos of humans after they have had a facelift, why not do this for Roland? If anyone from the NSW RSPCA is reading this, would you care to enlighten us as to why the public did not get to see a photo of Roland BEFORE surgery? Souff

Hey, I am serious! Those chooks totally demolished the wandering jew here and Souff didnt have to do a damned thing, well, except collect the eggs each day And I stopped spending money on all the bottles of pills and potions for dog rashes. The wandering jew never came back. Every other way we tried was nothing more than hard work and the stuff always came back. Guaranteed. I agree that oatmeal shampoo is the best, and only shampoo your dog when you really have to. Put your dog on to fish oil capsules (or Evening Primrose oil) as well - that helps the immune system to fight back. I wasn't totally serious about the vets new car, but when I see a dog that has organ damage, I see owners who have increased trips to the vet and to buy more medications and also buying the special foods is costly. And just think, the chooks can save you from all of this if the problem is originating from wandering jew! The reason that wandering jew is not a problem to dogs in the cooler months is because the silly dogs don't lie in it then. They just love the feeling of the cool waxy leaves on their tummies on the hotter days and they dont realise that it will be a problem for them. Go natural and get rid of that green stuff! We know from experience here that going natural is cheaper and more effective in the long run. Mr Rentachook knows that too - he has been renting chooks out since his uni days and it is a convenient option for many people. Souff

Spare a thought for the potential damage to your dog's liver and neurological system if you are planning on giving them long term. You might also like to contact my friend at Rentachook www.rentachook.com.au 2 or 3 of his hens will clean up that Wandering Jew for you and you dont need to have the chooks there long term, you just rent them from him for a while. They come with the coop and the chook feed. Beautiful! You can watch the horrible wandering jew disappear into their tummies, and you get to keep the fresh eggs. They are just magic little gardeners! All the drugs in the world wont make the wandering jew go away, but they will help to pay for your vet's next new car and shorten your dog's life. Natural methods far better Souff

Oh Bet, Souff is not a Cavalier specialist ... wish that I were ... I just have the joy of caring for some from time to time. Gorgeous, happy, feathered friends of mine :D The bigger Cavvies that I am privileged to know are very well bred and have the Flat Head shape of which you speak. True Cavvies in every sense of the word, but if you value your back, you dont try and lift them up too high! Much better to sit down and let them climb all over you Souff

AND the owners of the dogs can also use their brains and prevent these situations occurring! The owner of the dog in this case has a duty of care towards the customers who come into the salon and has taken a risk by having a dog in the salon, a risk that can have a very high cost for the dog, for the customers or for the owner. This risk to all would not have been there if the dog had not been there. That my friend is the bottom line. Souff Depends if you want your child exposed to a biting possibility. You can only trust your own judgement, not that of a dog owner and hope for the best???. :D *big weary sigh* Diablo, you cannot be serious .... but then again, you probably think you are.... sigh Diablo, if I went into a hairdressing salon with children I would NOT expect a dog to be there. If I did I might for a moment think that I had gone to the dog grooming salon by mistake. If I was sitting in the chair and the dog wandered into the salon from the back area, I would be first to tell the owner that the dog should not be in a hairdressing salon, for more than one reason. Dont get me wrong, I love dogs. But unlike you and a few others around here, I KNOW that not all places are appropriate places for dogs to be and that danger is not far away, not only for the children and others, but for the dog itself.
