  1. Probably the latter. They work at one coalface and breeders work at another coalface. The big pile of rubble between the coalfaces is all the dogs that they have to put to death. Dog breeders used to be despised by some RSPCA workers, and I doubt if much has changed, simply because they bred some of the dogs that inhabit the planet. The fact that most breeders only have the pups for 8 short weeks, and then pet owners have the dogs for the rest of the time, seems to be an inconvenient fact. It is hard to target pet owners as a group. Pet owners are a target group for donations, and it wouldn't be nice if you attacked the people who donate money to you. It is much easier to target dog breeders. Most dog breeders gave up donating anything to the RSPCA years ago so I guess not much will change. Souff
  2. Oh dear, we see an animal in danger and then put yourself in potential danger, while your parent allows you to be in potential danger. Are there any rehab places that such parents and their children can go to? They are not helping the animal world. I hope the owner of the dog gets the book thrown at them too .... there is a reason why our dogs are supposed to be under effective control at all times. Dogs on roads are not only a hazard to themselves, but to everyone else on the road. The ranger is paid to do the rescue of dogs from roads, hopefully somebody will tell this girl and her mother that. And yes, I know exactly how long it would have taken the ranger to come out to this particular area. The dogs would have moved on by the time the ranger got there. It is a catch-22 and this girl has paid a high price, but the outcome could have been worse. Souff
  3. Oh dear, I am still mopping up the tears here. Better go and feed some of the 600 .......
  4. 600 dogs..... Have you been there and counted them? Spoke just a moment ago to someone in the RSPCA, he mentioned this particular puppy farmer and told me the figure. Never heard of it until now. Well then it is a good idea to preface your statement with something like: "I was told by the RSPCA that ....... " 100 dogs is outrageous and when raids have been done on puppy farms that had around 100 tiny dogs it took a convoy of trucks from a couple of states to take the dogs away. 600 dogs? Just a tad over the top methinks. Souff

  6. What do you mean PE?? DOLers are again pointing out the flaws in the RSPCA's work. Some would rather we didnt do that. Souff Souff; you don't need to answer posts for me on my behalf, anyone would tihnk you like seeing your sig. I meant that as soon as The Ark posted something good, she got shut down. All rightie then!

  8. Gosh, I hope those three bitches don't all have litters at the same time, AND sleep in crates! Particularly in a utility room, such as a laundry or garage. And I hope they dont let the puppies get anywhere near those crates! Wonderful stuff for activists to photograph and use as propaganda as a puppy farm. A good photo tells a story, or so we are told. 9. OK I just went to Petlink and clicked on the RSPCA ad and watched through each of the sections. The 19th century industrial revolution theme that they have used sort of made me feel I was looking at old photos of an old Birmingham factory .... as a viewer I did not really connect it with the dogs, even though there were some cute pups sitting here and there. It didn't make me think that the 2 things were connected. I was more thinking that some of the big machinery would start clanging away. The relativity of the two things just wasn't there for me. On one of the pages it is stated that puppy farmers ask for a deposit when you buy a puppy from them. Well ..... I don't know of ANY REPUTABLE BREEDER who will hold a pup or any other animal for a stranger for 6 weeks or so, without asking for a holding deposit. When you commit to a major purchase in many areas of life, you are asked to make a deposit. Wedding outfits, landscaping, cars on order .... all sorts of things. Often such deposits are "substantial deposits". A seller of a pup who asks for a substantial deposit cannot be described as a puppy farmer but that is what the RSPCA has stated here. Sigh. If I was looking for a pup and went to Petlink to see what was advertised there, I would look at this ad, maybe not the whole way through, and then go to the list of people advertising to see what was for sale. Would it deter me from buying from those advertisers, if they had the type of pup I was looking for? Probably not. Souff
  10. My understanding is that the dogs should be able to stand up straight in a crate, not just be hunched down to fit in there. I too have seen the "worse" but that doesn't help the dogs and doesn't help people to learn how to do things better. Rescue places have to do the right thing for the dogs, just like the rest of us. If the dog cannot stand up straight in that crate, then a taller crate is needed, or the dog gets harnessed into the vehicle. That is what is required by law and it is better for the dogs. Souff
  11. There could be a number of different breeds in this bitch. If the OP is from Pet Haven, this bitch should not be in the crate in the picture, imho. She should be harnessed for travel, or put in a crate which gives better head room. I understand that the RSPCA has rules about things like this. Souff
  12. Isnt that funny. I went up to a mum and daughter walking two Jacks in the local area one day and stopped for a chat. I said - I know where you got your jackies from. Myrmidon JRTs. The look on her face was like this I could tell from the heads. Gorgeous little creatures. It is a sort of secret international code The X Factor maybe. If it is missing, you will pass by and barely notice the dog. If it is there, it screams at you "NOTICE ME, Like NOW!"
  13. "Serving up Fido as an entree might be a bit extreme, but one of the most effective ways you can make an impact on your ecological footprint is by not owning a dog… When it comes to an ecological footprint, a dog is the equivalent of two Toyota LandCruisers… The fact that a family pet is such a way of life in the Australian culture is damage enough. Even if we widened our palate to include dogs, that wouldn’t stop people owning pets… What would be most effective is for people to think hard before buying a pet. It might be better to grow some plants instead. At least plants are edible." Gee, you're a bit slow Andrew! Dogs ARE very edible (cho) and, unless Australia's state laws have changed recently, it is perfectly legal to slaughter your dog and cook it and eat it. You just have to ensure that you can kill it cleanly and the dog does not suffer in the process. This might come as a surprise to some newer DOLers but yes, it is true and there are elements of our multicultural society who have cho on the menu. Souff
  14. it is not just in Vic, it seems there are very few around, hence my delight, she was not only well bred but still an active working terrier. Souff was in heaven! And she had very little greying. Neither did the spaniels and I cant help but feel that the natural exercise that these dogs were getting probably had a lot to do with that. The rush of the chase has to be good for a dog's metabolism. Something that animal libbers cannot understand ... one of the things that the gamekeeper and I chatted about.
  15. Are you talking about Terriers or Collies? I'm not aware of any Terriers in Aus who are fortunate enough to hunt with a hound pack. oh i am an immigrant from scotland so i have seen borders working there eta in the late 60's early 70's Ooooh jealous much????? I believe even there they aren't allowed to work much. Stupid animal rights freaks. I did enquire about running with a registered hound pack here but they wouldn't accept terriers grr. Sorry, didn't mean to sound rude or make it sound like I thought you were stupid, just needed to clarify as I get 'collie' all the damn time LOL. Getting a little OT but I was recently privileged to meet a gamekeeper on a Scottish estate, along with his working Jack Russell bitch and 2 working Cocker Spaniels, all beautifully bred. All were treasured senior dogs, with very little arthritis, and still had an active role in the shoots, flushing and retrieving. It was so good to chat with him and meet his valued dogs who are still carrying out their traditional roles ... and loving it. Souff Lucky! Did you get pictures? How similar conformation wise were the dogs to our 'show' dogs here?? Wish we could work more with our dogs (although I'm not sure if I'd actually ever hunt my terriers, they quite possibly mean a little too much to me to risk their lives, however I think it would be different if I purchased a pup purely with the intention of working it). Would you believe that OH had the camera and was taking photos of a doe in the woods nearby. He just raised his eyebrows when I started babbling on about the gamekeepers dogs when he returned but I always seem to find interesting dogs, so he is used to it! It would have been lovely to have got some photos but the dogs had work to do. The spaniels were a little heavier set, but that could be to do with their ages, 10 & 12 as I recall. The JRT was much the same age, a bit cobby and in the head shape she reminded me of the Myrmidon JRTs of 10 years ago. She was an excellently marked tricolour, smooth coat, nice forward fold on the ears and a face that constantly said, "Lets go, boss!" The spaniels were a bit more laid back and still very capable of leaping up into their custom pen in the back of his Jeep. It was one great experience.

  17. You are avoiding the core issue MelzeWelza. You started out moaning about a pet shop in faraway Japan, a pet shop that presumably has little or no connection with Australian dog breeders, and then you aligned that situation with the live export of SHEEP from Australia! Wakie, wakie MelzaWelza! There was no reason to align these two issues ...... NONE AT ALL. The Japanese pet shop is not selling live sheep from Australia, or if they are you forgot to mention it. Get back to the real reason for our disagreement, MelzaWelza. No avoidance tactics. No smokescreens. That was the core issue that made me so angry. Aussie sheep farmers reputations do not need to be dragged through the mud of the internet when the issue is really about a low grade pet shop in Japan. Souff
  18. There certainly is. One of the things that dog people will be hearing is that it was all Labor's fault, all Labor's doing. They now need to put the pressure on their new government to get some balance and commonsense back into animal legislation in Vic - SOONER rather than later, before the new government gets complacent. Let's hope that in the coming months other states' voters follow the Victorian trend - its been a very long Labor drought and the place needs a clean out. Souff
  19. ??? How??? Is it different from Federal and Queensland preferential voting? Isn't it up to the individual to allocate preferences? Can't you vote Greens first, then whoever you want second? Maybe I am missing something. A Victorian DOLer might be more knowledgeable on what is happening with the Greens down there. Anyone Vic political animals around tonight? Sorry BM, my brain is drained tonight! You are right about the voters preferences. I am thinking about how the Greens vote in parliament .... with Labor.

  21. What a sad finish to an old Poodle's life. Groomers can tell stories of maggots eating away at a dog under a matted mess so I guess it is a matter of what type of fly and whether there was an infection there in the first place. RIP little veteran, you are in kinder hands now.
