  1. Yeah I believe we do expect too much at times. For that reason I would never have a dog PTS because it defended itself against rough handling or anything that caused it pain. Just heard on the news that a family dog has scalped a 4 year old and the child is fighting for life. Breed at this time unknown. How can anyone afford to take the risk whether the dog was defending itself or not. I was under the impression we were referring to a dog maybe snapping at a child who caused a dog pain, not a dog mauling a child severely. In my mind there's a difference. The OP stated that the dog is aggressive, so one could easily graduate from snapping to more if that way way inclined. I mean, how much leeway do we allow? The OP states that it is aggressive, in her rather biased opinion. From what was described it could easily have been bad handling and judgement on the owners part. We will never know.
  2. I am really sorry but that is like saying you are probably quite safe in a hospital with Golden Staph. Vets should be a last resort. If some Clinic wants to set themselves up as a 'Pet Resort" amongst the sick, injured, diseased and dying then they have their loyalties misplaced. Puppy schools are responsibly conducted 'off-site.' At least they are by those who want to maintain their public perception as well as their revenue. Px What irresponsible advice When does school go back?
  3. Beautiful, frustrating, agile, surefooted, cunning, affectionate, vocal little demons with a touch of monkey dexterity added in. I think my son carries mental scars from trying to outfox ours when he was young, nothing like watching a Basenji run along the top of a pool fence turn and chortle at you before leaping off and heading west. Such great characters, but not for everyone.
  4. Depends on the time of day, the weather, how long we will be away.
  5. Lots of purebred maltipoos, schnoodles, moodles, and cavachons ;)
  6. Some of the tread in posts, a couple of strands of ping string set just off the fence maybe?
  7. You could try a ping string along the bottom of the fence.
  8. Prescription Diets certainly have a place and many animals benefit from them. Some owners cannot/will not prepare suitable meals from scratch. kiwikitten if your cat could not tolerate the diet why did you continue to feed it?
  9. Of course everyone is allowed to have personal likes and dislikes, but rude & thoughtless comments are uncalled for. It is not necessary to to resort to some of the derogatory terms of phrase that are often used. Ignorant generalisations about breeds and their owners are just as bad. There are many breeds that I would not choose to own, for different reasons, but I wouldn't call them "things" or "stupid" or "ugly", they are just not for me.
  10. Firstly I won't make any judgements based on your take on the situation as it is pretty obvious you do not like the dog and want it gone. Good thing it is not your call to make. Jacks can be pretty full on, and what you call aggressive behavior may be far from it. If one of my dogs bit me, there would have to be a reason and something would need to be worked on, or treated.
  11. Unless you actually contacted all the Breeders and asked you cannot presume they don't test. They may not feel the need to mention it because it is simply part & parcel of what they do.
  12. I never expected to see such a controversial statement on this board. However, you express my views perfectly. Yes +1! You have my breed down pat as far as i am concerned  Apart from a few select breeders who dare to stay true to the standard the only place you find a decent dog these days is "byb". Its funny the range of practices here that are considered byb. So you can health test, be registered with ANKC but if the litter aint reg you are still a byb? I would take that any day over all these puppy farms that are being discovered First "byb good for nothing mongrel" shepherd died of old age at 15. Damn her non registered breeders for selling us a healthy and long lived family member  However, in saying all that, i think saying i won't help as they are a byb is the wrong attitude. Education is the key and i hope there is someone she knows who can inform her of the costs and the hard work both her and the bitch will have to go through, as well as the potential to lose the litter as well as the bitch if things go wrong. A risk all breeders take. Hopefully if she sees things in perspective she might think twice in the future. Though it is likely she will not. Really!! You have been to every GSD breeder in Australia and evaluated their dogs? Get over yourself.
  13. I don't feed as much either, I know of others that do however, it depends on each dogs needs.
  14. Im not sure I agree with that statement. French Bulldogs for example, are worth around $3000 which is pretty expensive for most people. Especially if you have a mortage, children and well, a life. Just because that's an out of reach price for some, it doesn't necessarily mean they wouldn't have the money to take care of them properly. I worry that wellbred purebred dogs are going to become out of reach of the average person leaving bybers as the only option if someone is desperate for a certain breed. Ten years is not a great deal of time for some of the prices to have risen like they have. The average pay packet wouldn't have increased by 400%, yet the majority of dog prices have. I wonder how high they can go before some breeds become only for the elite The health testing now required is already pushing the costs of breeding through the roof, everything associated with Breeding has increased cost wise. Some Breeders have been forced out because of it, naturally it is going to make the cost of a puppy more expensive, but some breeds have always been at the top end of the market and out of reach of a lot of families that hasn't changed.
  15. I am not 'having a go' with this comment as it is true, but i was looking at a rescue site the other day and there was a dog in the pound on death row and they even stated what his kennel name was on his papers that they had! This 'ethical' registed breeder obviously just didn't give a s^&t that one of her pups was going to die in a pound Being a country person i am sick of ppl just assuming what they percieve as byb as the only ppl who allow this to happen. I know many ppl who bred their working dogs purely for that sake and made sure they knew where their pups were going and how they were going to be treated. Just because they are not registered or show dogs doesn't make these ppl automatically bad. The Breeder may have been unaware of the dogs situation. Rescues, ponds, surrendering owners do not always contact the Breeder.
  16. Whilst it is very sad for you to have lost a loved companion, there are many healthy long lived dogs out there. Hopefully in time you will realise that.
  17. It sounds as if you need to get Shelley thoroughly examined, if she is in pain she will be reluctant to exercise, meanwhile take her swimming in a dog pool, excellent exercise low impact. You need to get her moving.
  18. wow I must tell my GSD she is disabled..she doesn't know that....actually if we had aircon she probably would be in it, if I was, but we don't have that luxury...doesn't phase her though...Qld dogs are tough obviously, she helped out fencing and moving wayward ponies yesterday..she'll do me. That's the thing though isn't it choice.
  19. It is good that there are so many choices isn't it, owning any pet is a lifetime commitment, if you cannot be stuffed grooming don't buy a coated breed, the same goes for high energy dogs don't buy one if you can't go the distance. There is a huge difference however between the big show coats that are painstakingly maintained and your run of the family dog coat.
  20. Agreed, and some top shelf photography. Love the Afghan shots
  21. Think I'll stick to cooking and mushing my own veges. Sounds far too complicated for me. You soak the food, then you don't, then you soak the food ... LOL You soak one type of food only, you soak it once, quite simple really, my 9yo grandson can do it. The other variety which is prepared for convenience really you don't. Different products. As for complicated, far from it You comprehension skills need tweaking I think. Your intentions are very obvious EI. You are a BH fan, I think everyone gets that
  22. Is your dog sensitive to other meats juice? I have had excellent results without using Roo, and I have found that the quantity each dog needed has needed to be reduced as once they were established on the regime they started to look like they had been in the good paddock too long LOL Certainly this is my experience but others I know using VAN have found the same with the amounts needed. I like to feed variation in meats and bones, and have found that now the 2 problem animals are sorted with their issues I can mix it up a bit and have no reaction and I can use cheaper meat sources. Again this is my own experience, the journey to getting it right is very different for each case.
