  1. Silver poodles do take quite some time to change into their adult colour, and then some will continue to fade out. It is possible he has a soft coat, you really will have to wait and see as he matures. There is a great variation in Poodle coats. Give his breeder a call about his papers and if you have no luck then if you have his details give Dogs Qld a call and see if his litter registration has been processed.
  2. granted, but heart, is classed as offal, but I too feed it as a muscle meat. Only because most people these days class it as awful ;)
  3. You would be hard pressed to find one I would think, there are so few of them left.
  4. I feed Liver & Kidneys at a rate of about 10% of their diet. I use natural dried Liver as treats and if they have had a lot of it they don't get as much in their raw. Tongue and Heart are muscle meat and I do not count them as offal they get fed whenever I get them. Tongue is good chewing. :)
  5. I had trouble getting my hounds to chase a lure, they wanted to race each other but not chase the lure. Rabbits and hares, well totally different story ..it just comes naturally
  6. That's what I have used in the past, worked very well.
  7. Wow you certainly are a charmer! So all the dogs of these breeds in the above rant are rubbish? You must have met a hell of a lot of dogs.
  8. Who cares I am pretty sure we have had threads on almost every brand imaginable.
  9. Curious about this, how would she manage if you had leave her in a boarding kennel or in hospital at the Vets?
  10. I'm curious to see if there are any underlining problems, as there must be some reason she is so destructive (both when alone and when people are home). I actually started the thread to find out the process of what happens (ie they come into your home? Watch your dog?). I have no idea as I've never heard of the concept before DOL. Im not here for advice to stop her chewing, all of it is bleeding obvious, I actually came to ask about the behaviorist process as id already made up my mind to consult one. Telling me to confine her and put things away is a bandaid solution, I'm keen to delve further into it to see WHY she actually does it. Sue me for wanting to consult a professional to get help for me and me dog. Good Grief use a bandaid before you need a tourniquet if it is that bleeding obvious do it,instead of allowing her to keep chewing as she has in your own words since you got her. How do you intend to stop her whilst you are delving into the cause.
  11. it's your Mother's house but you blame her for leaving her own telephone cord down? Do you have any idea how much aquariums cost and how fragile they can be? I'd be threatening your dog too. You knew Lucy was destructive, you should have bought a crate for her before she went to your Mum's so Lucy could have been better managed. Actually she's stayed there at least 5 other times and NEVER destroyed anything at mums. She sleeps on mums bed and has never been a problem therefore I have never had the need to contain her. I love how you always jump to the worst conclusion first without getting a full set of facts first. Always looking for the worst in someone. You are on here complaining that your dog is destructive, and that you need help. So what is it? does she destroy things or not? If she cannot be trusted to not chew cords she needs to be confined for her own safety at least, it really isn't that hard.
  12. Seriously Sandgrubber. If a family can't look after coat, it is too bloody easy, don't buy a coated breed, there are plenty of breeds to choose from. But honestly the care a coated breed gets in the AVERAGE household would mean that it is generally not going to have the huge profuse coat that a showdog would.
  13. What do you suggest landholders do whilst dogs are mauling their stock??? The dogs wont be wearing flashing signs saying "this is an oops moment" I live with knowledge that if my dogs got out and went wandering that they too could be shot. Of course I would be devastated, but how can I blame the landowner, it is simple, I can't.
  14. I have seen some of the most gut wrenching sights after dogs have attacked livestock, it is not easy to erase those things from your mind. No foal deserves to be mauled before it has even been freed from its sack, or its mother mauled while she is still down. How would the sight of 50 bloodied birds some dead some still attempting to flap about sit with with most people. It is soul destroying to have to face this time and time again because dogs run free. The animals that meet their end with a quick bullet are the lucky ones.
  15. Wow sounds like a lot of dog owners need a reality check. It is not ok for dogs to roam at large and menace, worry or attack livestock. For those of you that think it is just a few chooks, that is simply irresponsible. Spend a few months working on the land or for a rural vet and go out to calls for mauled animals. Just a few chooks
  16. You need to contain your dog, it really is that simple. She would not be welcome to free run of my home. I think a puppy pen or a crate would be more beneficial than a behaviorist at this point.
  17. Show dogs can be kept in full coat and fully exercised, you simply do not allow them to run wild in the bush or through burrs, or pull each other around by the coat in play or be infested in fleas. Coats can be wrapped, top knots tied up, coats conditioned. It takes a lot of dedication on the part of the owner to keep a coated breed in show condition. It does not mean they are not allowed to be dogs. A couple of hours on the beach and my afghan would go home to a bath and conditioning treatment, or the salt sand left in the coat would damage it just like it does our hair. Four months of beach and swimming whilst I was pregnant and unwell and her coat looked pretty tatty at the end. All my show dogs have had free exercise, swimming, running, playing at the beach, but once home you had to put in the hard yards. They could not play in the scrub where bushes would pull at the coat and burrs and grass seeds ruin it, but they played long and hard in safe areas. Many coated breeds are used for hunting and work, but they do not keep the big coats we see on show dogs because it is damaged and certainly not maintained the way a show coat is.
  18. The registry with the NSW Dept of Local Government is useless if you reside outside of NSW I registered my NSW bred boy with CAR then contacted the NSW registry and they deactivated him, living in QLD there was no need for him to be registered with them. Its is important for any NSW residents who travel outside of NSW with their dog/s to register their animals chip on another database beside the Local Government one so that you can be contacted if you lose your pet out of the state.
  19. The biggest problem I have come across is owners not updating their details. Anyone can use Pet Address to find which data base an animal is registered on. It is usually the first port of call for ACOs and Vets here if the animal is not wearing a tag with a microchip registry number.
  20. If pups are allowed to access and chew things that are not theirs they will continue to do it because it is what they know. If you don't want your belongings destroyed then pick them up, shut the doors, put baby gates on. When you are not home only allow access to her toys and a safe area.
  21. There are Lab/ Golden crosses used on a fairly regular basis as assistance and guide dogs. It is quite possible that is what they are.
  22. Poppycock. Please provide any evidence that the 'Pekinese' is historically consistent. Consider Ming Dynasty sculptures (one inserted below). I wouldn't say that dog looks like Palacegarden Malachy or Palacegarden Bianca. The Chinese were not 'enlightened' dog breeders. They didn't keep pedigrees, and historically, employed cross breeding and in some eras, physical manipulation (at the end of the Chinese Empire, message, bashing puppies faces, and a way of feeding puppies from the inside of a stretched pig skin in a way that forced them to press their soft face bones against the surface for hours each day) to try and achieve the conformation that was in style in the court of the time. The same court routinely practiced foot binding on women. You cannot expect the looks of court dogs to come true when they were brought to the west because their facial structure was not genetic. The Lion Dog 'breed' was originally supposed to resemble Buddha's Lion. Small hitch, the people involved had never seen a lion. Unfortunately, they didn't have cameras at the time, so we can't develop a good visual history for the Lion Dog. The Dowager 'Empress' -- who is routinely quoted in descriptions of Palace Pekes, was a backwards, power-hungry individual who ended up as Empress only because she (as wife #3, not of royal blood) bore the Emperor a son. According to Coren, her legitimacy was questionable, and she used the Lion Dogs as a means of raising her association with Buddha . . . and hence, power. Quoting her is about like quoting Hitler to define the standard for the GSD. The western breed . . . which the Chinese would not have called the Pekinese (Peking is now called Bei Jing, and it was not always the Imperial seat of power) is a breed created in the late 19th/ early 20th century by people who came into possession of dogs taken from the crumbling remains of the Chinese Empire. Some Peke breeders believe there was cross breeding with other Asiatic breeds after the Peke came to the west (see the Happa Dog article I posted earlier). Historical photos show of the breed in the west show progressively denser coats and shorter muzzles. For a good description from a professional historian see See Ch 16 of Coren, Stanley (2002) The Pawprints of History, The Free Press. Note also the Australian standard for the Peke, copied from the UK KC revised standard of 2008. (The US standard has not incorporated the revisions, which were introduced to avoid extreme and unhealthy conformation). Head fairly large, proportionately wider than deep. Skull moderately broad, wide and flat between ears, not domed, wide between eyes. Nose not too short, broad, nostrils large and open. A slight wrinkle, preferably broken, may extend from the cheeks to the bridge of the nose in a wide inverted V. This must never adversely affect or obscure eyes or nose. Pinched nostrils and heavy over-nose wrinkles are unacceptable and should be heavily penalised. Muzzle must be evident, but may be relatively short and wide. Firm underjaw. Lips not obscuring a well defined chin. Defined stop. Black pigment essential on nose, lips and eye rims. 'not too short' is subject to interpretation . . . but there's no question that it was added to the standard to encourage breeders to breed away from flat faced, brachycephalic dogs. The equivalent move has not been made in the US. In my book, that's a shame. p.s. I don't mind the heat and am not avoiding the kitchen. But sometimes (eg, when it's time to mow, fertilize, thin, prune, or harvest the vineyard, or when I decide to travel) DOL is not my highest priority. p.p.s. I am not highly qualified to speak on Chinese dog breeding practices over the last 1000+ yrs, but I'll bet my qualifications outrank most of the people who have attacked me. My mother's side of the family was involved in the China trade and knew the people who imported the early 'Pekinese'. My father was born in China in 1918. My paternal grandparents left China in 1950. I majored in Asian studies in a leading US university and at one point spoke passable 'Mandarin' and knew 5000+ characters. I've taken several university level courses in Chinese history. p.p.p.s. my first post on Malachy's victory began with a statement saying that I'm not big on coated breeds. I am also prejudiced against what I call 'barbie dogs'. No secret, I don't view the show ring as a good way to judge a dog's value and I detest breeding for charismatic image. I'd rather see health and temperament (including working ability if the breed still has 'work') than bench appeal used as a basis for what dog to put over what bitch. IF YOU ARE GOING TO ATTACK ME, PLEASE BE AS OPEN ABOUT YOUR VALUES AS I HAVE BEEN. As for being accused of being a broken record . . . yup, that's what happens when you take a consistent position. When attacked, you're either a broken record, or you flip-flop. If you check my full record of postings, you'll find I am well above average for providing documentation for statements I make and making it clear when I am venturing opinions as opposed to presenting what appear to be facts. AND I STILL HAVEN'T GOTTEN ANY EXPLANATION FOR WHY I HAVE BEEN DQ'D FROM THE BREEDERS FORUM. Since none of us here have any say in who can post in the Breeders forum, you will have to take that up with TROY it is his call. Maybe it was because posts written on his forum were being copied over to another forum to be kicked around by you and your mates. Ask him.
