  1. The dogs are still barking they are just quieter, why is that sad? They still yap their heads off. Sad is having an irate neighbour on your doorstep or the local law officers insisting you dispose of your dogs.
  2. Qld legislation statews that all animals are to be microchipped before ownership changes, so those thinking they are being clever are actually breaking the law.
  3. One of the most common side effects of Comfortis is vomiting, it is important to note that the manufacturer advises it is to be given with a meal, which greatly reduces the chance of them vomiting. I have many clients on Comfortis due to the massive flea outbreak that our area has had over the past year and it has worked extremely well. It is possible for an animal to react to any product used on them like us they can have sensitivities and can be intolerant to different things.
  4. The wonderful thing about litters born to promiscuous mums who can get out and about when in season is litters with multiple sires. Real liquorice allsorts some of them turn out to be.
  5. I have used the VAN herbal shampoo and found this once with my Lab but I hadn't rinsed him properly due to being interrupted by an emergency. Next time he was thoroughly rinsed and all was good no flaking.
  6. Lots of factors in play here unsupervised child, unsupervised child with dog, unsupervised child with dog that isn't even theirs to start with, not that child should have been left with their own dog either. Of cause again it is a mauling and an attack, when it is just what it is a dog bite. If he was mauled he would be looking a lot worse than what he is. Mother and dog owner both need a slap, but I guess it will only be the child and dog that pay, and the dog with its life.
  7. We did pretty much the same thing with Stumpy Tail they were assessed then allowed on the register.
  8. Just curious how does living in QLD make a difference? We use interceptor monthly and only treat for fleas if we've seen 1 on the dogs or they have been in contact with someone else's pet that has had fleas. We check for ticks but never had one but when we were in Rockhampton for work treated them for ticks as we were warned of them being bad in that area. We have lots of mozzies here the bad kind and because of the climate we can have a hook/whip worm problem. Prevention is better than cure. :) This is the crux of the matter, every area has a different set of risks to weigh up. The climate has also created new issues like Paralysis Tick in areas where they have not been previously, thanks to the boost in Bandicoot numbers after the flooding. Some areas have experienced Flea plagues and I know several Breeders who have had issues with hookworm due to the soil not drying out at all for months on end.
  9. In reality a pedigree is simply a record of lineage, so homemade pedigree or not it is still a pedigree. Whether we who are involved in ANKC breeds agree or not ANKC means nothing if you do not intend to be involved with it. There have always been and will always continue to be breeds that do not wish to have recognition with ANKC or FCI, that fact doesn't make them made up or misrepresenting, it is purely different to how WE do things. My way or the highway seems to be the attitude with the dog world.
  10. We only have two peak times a year with shedding with our Lab and I bath and blow it out when he is at that really gross stage where if you touch him you dislodge a handful then continue to attack him with the comb. The rest of the year I comb him out once a week. I find the comb really good for the ruff and rump areas where they tend to be so thick. I have a mountain of brown hair in the bin as we speak from a comb out this afternoon. The only times I question my decision to add another Lab is when he is going through this. It is far worse than the GSD.
  11. He is probably getting ready for a lush new winter coat and ridding himself of puppy coat at the same time. You could probably rid yourself of some of it with a good hydrobath and high velocity blow out but unless he has finished his change it wont stop it. I get more coat out with a fine metal comb than any other brush, maybe you could try that.
  12. Depending on the breed, many non ANKC recognised breeds that have their own registry also run their own events. ANKC is but a drop in the ocean as far as the world of dogs is concerned.
  13. There have been quite a few outbreaks of Lepto in central and northern Qld, so if this is where you are (just going by your state on your profile), I would discuss it further with your Vet and see if this is why it has been suggested.
  14. There are Triennial Vaccines available that are registered as such.
  15. Responsible breeders will be legislated out of existence before laws have any effect on the ignorant and plain irresponsible. Councils that already have Breeding permits simply do not enforce them as is evident by the sheer numbers of byb pups and kittens that appear on notice boards and in the press and social media daily. The microchipping legislation is another that is ignored daily.
  16. Expecting all breeds to act the same is misguided. Even Judges expect the Breeds to react differently, there is not one generic show dog personality nor should they be, it would mean breeds are losing their very essence. We ask a lot of our dogs as it is.
  17. I wouldn't drive to a show and the majority are quite a drive to discover that for some reason I couldn't exhibit my dogs, or would not have chosen to enter under that particular judge. It is far too expensive and takes a good deal of my time out of a busy life. If an exhibitor is showing a breed that requires a great deal of grooming and preparation it would be totally out of the question.
  18. You have my sympathy it is a very hard situation to treat effectively, the hair roller and lots and lots of vet wrap as already suggested. I puff pink eye powder on the injured area before wrapping. Depending on the tail carriage of your girl you can sometimes strap the tail down a hind leg to limit the movement while it heals. Stitching will not help in my experience. If you end up having to have her tail docked, it is a slow healing process and will be quite uncomfortable for the dog, but will certainly prevent it recurring. It is a horrid injury and the blood splattered walls and door ways are impressive. Often when watching those CSI type tv shows I wonder what they would make of the blood splatters up our walls and furniture from our last tail injury.
  19. Espinay has nailed it, there are huge differences between showing and breeding. Not every dog that graces the show ring should be bred from, it is the choices that Breeders make that should be the most important, not the decisions of Judges. Every litter leaves a legacy for future generations.
  20. My dogs eat minced chicken offcuts and frames, and a pet mince made up by the butcher for me, we wouldn't eat the resulting product but it is perfectly fine for dogs. What about all the offal that dogs thrive on that people these days seem to find unpalatable, there are heaps of other examples out there, like fish heads, poultry necks, roo tails, pigs heads and seconds from the chicken plant. Whilst there are crappy preservative laden pet meats available, there are also many excellent choices.
  21. The OPs diet is pretty well devoid of calcium, a calcium supplement would be advisable in this case. Balanced diets do not need additional calcium, a complete dry food diet or a raw diet based on edible RMBs for instance would not need additional supplements.
  22. If she likes bones then you can substitute a normal meal with them..mine get turkey necks as a meal..or a chicken frame...they are part of their diet not an extra.
  23. If you sat down and studied the ingredients in most commercial things and that includes foods you will come up with lists of ingredients that someone somewhere on a forum will deem to be capable of harming your dog. Dogs here eat raw meaty bones as part of their daily diet, they eat them before they have a chance to get dirty or smelly, they eat them completely and there is no mess left behind. I feed fresh refrigerated meats and bones and have not had an issue with bacterial illnesses. Anything a dog eats or chews can in reality be a choking risk, I have known dogs to choke and die eating dry food, dog sausage, left over cooked sausages, and yes raw bones. Just like every year a number of people die from choking on food. If your dog is thriving on Artemis, then stop worrying. You will have to make up your own mind about teeth cleaning and do what causes you the least worry.
  24. Complete Mix sensitive here, premium choice not available anywhere handy but this way I get to use a wide variety of meats and bones and it is very $$ friendly for me.
