  1. The way young giant breeds are reared is so crucial if you want to end up with a sound animal at the end, despite the clearances its parents may have. Once a pup leaves your care you have no control over how it is fed, exercised or housed. I would take on board the advice of others who have experience in giant breed contracts before you go ahead.
  2. The only Corgi back problems I have encountered have been in obese dogs
  3. This! There is a huge difference which seems to escape many people.
  4. The majority of dogs that end up Euthed at our regional Pound are not strays they are surrenders. The ones Euthed are generally the ones not suitable for rescue or that there simply is no room in rescue for. The ones that rescue take often fail too and bounce back. It certainly is not the regional Councils fault that these dogs are there, they were put there by owners who would not or could not commit to giving these animals a forever home. I fail to see how making the Pound out to be the bad guys helps with this.
  5. I hope they can lock the little ferals away. Sadly they will probably get a warning and get off to brag on facebook.
  6. The Murray River Curlie very popular with recreational hunters and I guess they have never felt the need to involve themselves with ANKC activities. They have been around for yonks lovely dogs :D
  7. Well socialised pups from Breeders that I respect and trust have arrived here at various ages and have all made the grade. My heart dog was 15 months. Bonding, training and behavioural issues have not been an issue with well reared pups :)
  8. The Paralysis Tick season has well and truly started It is going to take some time for people to get used to having to search pets daily and use prevention when they live in areas where Paralysis ticks have not been known before. This is our second season here since they surfaced and we are already seeing quite a few and from new areas.
  9. What is "BARF"? BARF generally just means a pre-made raw food patty with meat and veggies and other yummies. There are many brands, not just the one given below. Google "barf dog food" and you'll get some good results. BARF doesn't mean patties at all - it stands for "Biologically Appropriate Raw Food" or "Bones and Raw Food". The patties were only developed relatively recently, and seem to be different to what true raw feeders feed anyway (they don't help teeth, for example). I know, but generally people mean the pre-made patties when talking about BARF. I don't know many people who say BARF when they mean raw (as in, bones and fresh meat & veg) Bones and Raw Foods is what it has always meant here. Billinghursts patties are a relatively new thing amongst us old folk.
  10. Yep, this is pretty well how it is I think. I was asked recently what sort of Enrichment Program I offer for my Grooming dogs.
  11. Personally I'd be looking for another Vet, feeding raw meat and bones including chicken is fine if you are sensible, obtained from clean sources, feed it fresh, store it as you would your own meat, and ensure that the portion sizes are suitable to the dog.
  12. You've just described my childhood. Exactly  How times have changed!
  13. Scan him to get the chip number, then search the number on Pet Address that will tell you the Registry he is registered on, contact them for change of details form.
  14. Paralysis ticks are now found in a far greater area than they have been before, it would pay for anyone who owns pets to ensure they know what to look for and to get into the habit of checking daily. If you move to a new area ring around the Vets and ask if they treat any tick cases.
  15. I would not feed him at all, I would take him straight to the Vet and have him checked out, Bowel Obstruction is at the top of my list, that or a very irritated Bowel in which case no food.
  16. I can't think of any GOOD reasons for clipping off such a young puppy, all it needs at the most is a hygiene tidy. This poor little bub needs to learn that grooming will not hurt it, buzzing a pair of clipper s over a frightend pup will not do that. Maybe if he has difficult hair try bathing him gently in warm water, use a good puppy conditioner to make it easier to comb him and dry him gently and bit by bit comb his coat and offer him some nice treats whilst you do. Hold puppy on your lap on a towel and gently comb him.
  17. RAW chicken carcasses, pieces etc are perfectly fine for dogs providing they are of suitable size for the dogs breed and chewing style. Cooked chicken bones or any cooked bones for that matter are a big NO. I feed chicken frames, necks, wings, marylands, entire birds halved, turkey necks, wings, on a nearly daily basis to whomever the portion size suits.
  18. Yeah....that stuck out to me too....WTF? They're all a bunch of old eejits, why would we expect they know how to handle dogs. You think so...the Queen is actually a very good dog handler and trainer, her Sandringham Labs have always competed with the best in working gundog trials. Pack fights can happen in any group of dogs...any breed...why this is even newsworthy is beyond me. Nothing like a little sensationalism to sell papers and mags.
  19. Which heartwormer comes as a tablet any more? They all seem to be chews. Milbemax tabs :)
  20. I don't know how Vic works but here the owner has to read & sign the surrender form which clearly states they are signing ownership of their animal over to the Council and that the council then has the authority to dispose of the animal as it sees fit. I have seen some cases where it has been a very emotional signover and the Council have held off on the animal for up to 48 hours just in case. Legally however they are under no obligation to do so and when the pound is full or the animals are not considered to be likely rehomers then they will be destroyed by close of business. A pound is not a shelter or a rescue it is a Pound, and so many people simply fail to understand that their animal has a very good chance of being destroyed. You can tell them but many seem to disregard it to ease their guilt.
  21. Unless a Vet practice owns an incinerator or a huge parcel of land for burials there are going to be forwarded on costs for them arranging disposal of animals in the vast majority of cases. Local councils charge for landfill burial, so that cost will passed on, if the Vets are lucky enough to be able to access an incinerator then that cost will be passed on as well. This is what businesses do. Individual cremations using this method will obviously be more expensive than group cremations, and private pet cremations by those companies that offer such services will be more expensive again. There are huge costs involved in purchasing and maintaining the incinerators that are used for these things. Local councils do not do these things for free all council services are generally user pays.
  22. Find a good Vet Chiro and you can do it all in one place.
  23. The majority of pups in the local Pet Shops here come from backyards in town from private byb's. Easy money for those who see nothing wrong with allowing their pet bitches to have a litter each season. They don't even have to advertise them they simply arrange for the shops to take the entire litter. Shop sells the pups and tell the purchasers of female pups to let them know when she has pups, and on and on it goes. Owners with 2/3 bitches producing a variety of oodles make a tidy profit the shop makes more. Closing the commercial puppy farms will not hinder the trade from these shops at all.
  24. You are waiting for her second heat? It is quite probably her normal cycle, many bitches cycle far longer than 6 months between heats. What was her mothers heat cycle?
