  1. My first thoughts exactly. My experience with cattle dogs is limited, however I try to avoid them if possible. We were on a farm the other day and they had to chain up their cattle dog because he was being so aggressive towards both us and Halle. I come across quite a few of them out where we live and my IMO they are not a nice dog But it is generally what they are bred for so it makes sense. BUT Lots of positive training will help. They need to learn that calm behaviour will get them attention, and that it worth it for them, and rough behaviour will get them nothing-no company, no attention, no reward at all. Find what works, and mot importantly, stick to it!
  2. Halle had that one and off a few times when she was younger .. to be honest it didn't even bother us at all. I mean, we always keep an eye on it (much like your own baby I guess!) but it was never a problem
  3. I know the vet in Terrey Hills is really good. Has been there for a long time. Not sure on prices but worth a call.
  4. What part of metro sydney are you in? $400 does seem excessive. An overnight stay should NOT be compulsory either!! I imagine that would be more distressing for the dog if anything...
  5. *hangs head* Cross breed - poodle/maltese. And he extremely clever - picks things up VERY quickly. Sounds like you're implying cross breeds are incapable of such a thing I don't have anything useful to add I'm sorry, I don't have a male dog! *cringes* at the pet shop comment Ah well, live and learn!
  6. Where should I be looking for some info on that? Im interested in you opinion too.. why do u say that ? Im just curious
  7. Possibly legal, but a direct breach of the COE - hardly an ethical breeder. ETA: Thinking on this more, I had a feeling that at least some of the airlines won't fly pups under the age of 8 weeks. Just checked Virgin Blue, and it is certainly the case for them. Haven't looked at Qantas yet. Of course, I guess that relies on the honesty of the person sending the pup to a degree, since it's unreasonable to expect airline staff to be able to tell the difference between a 7 week old pup and an 8 week old pup. ETA: AAE (freight for Qantas) are the same - will not accepts pups under 8 weeks of age. We had our puppy flown at 7 weeks 4 days.. it was the only day we could get to the airport to pick her up, otherwise we would had to have waited another 2 weeks. She flew with Virgin Blue and nothing was said.. her birthdate was on the card on her crate and no one noticed. Having said that, the breeder was ok with sending her then too.. it was only a matter of 3 days. I would have been concerned if she'd said ok to earlier than 7 weeks.
  8. He he Halle have 100% recall until she was 11 months old.. oh it was a marvellous day!! It's like.. "What have you done with my puppy? Who ARE you!?" Just keep working on it-Boz sounds like a smart pup and you seem to be doing a great job It's one of the things I love about this site-so many dog owners being proactive (rather than the few who are REactive) with their dogs and training etc. Ash's idea is great too. You can even make up a long lead from rope-we have a 10m one for Halle that we use on the beach..they're very handy
  9. Something you could try now is doing the things he already does well, outside of the home, or at least add distractions.. The next step would be to do sit training in different areas ( my advice would be to NOT do "come" training until you are sure he will respond- ifthey get away with not obeying just once, it reeeeally makes things tricky for future training! ) I would continue using treats randomly as well-he is still a little pup so that will be his main motivation until your praise being his main motivation will take over.
  10. Oh its exciting!!! Looking pretty much now, but wanting one in about July'ish. Different breeder (a few things I didn't like about last one), another girl and RED AND TAN!!!! Wow, I'm really excited for you! And you've just been through Halle so you should be very experienced at puppy rearing lol. What colour is Halle, is she red and tan as well? It might be awhile away, but can't wait to see pics, lol! Good luck in finding your puppy, puppy shopping is fun! (and stressful... ) He he, puppy shopping is the best part! I love looking at all the different breeders and what they do etc, what their pups are like.. Halle is Black and tan (with a little white splash down her front and belly). Now we have to decide whether we'll get a boy or girl... Will have to do some research into that
  11. We haven't given too much thought about the dynamics of the pair just yet... it's not set in concrete yet I guess we want another girl because we prefer female dogs... for our own reasons I guess. My partner has always owned female dogs, so I guess we like what we know I also prefer female dogs.. I think in general, from what I've seen of male dogs I know, they mark everything and just have different mentalities.. But we are most open to sugestions and advice if its what is best for the dogs
  12. could this be caused merely by the heat and being outside? It's not hot where we are today.. she's been getting progressively better lately as well. Don't worry, we'll make sure it wasn't just a one off Oh its exciting!!! Looking pretty much now, but wanting one in about July'ish. Different breeder (a few things I didn't like about last one), another girl and RED AND TAN!!!! Diva We must be insane.. its not what we're looking for LOL but we're resigned ourselves to it-and its kind of nice to come home to as well ALl our guests know she is a nutter and-thank god- are never caught out when she jumps on them! It's been fun
  13. I knew this day would come, I was just hoping it wasn't going to happen so soon!! Today, for the first time, Halle decided she has given up her puppy ways and taken herself into the world of adulthood (After 12 months of jumping on people as they walk ouside, all of a sudden she has decided its not necessary and realised she'll gat a pat and cuddle either way) So.. I now want another puppy!!!!!! We had decided before we got Halle that we would always get another dog(another kelpie) and had also decided we wouldn't get one until Halle had well and truly demonstrated to us that she was over her silly puppy ways (they dont seem so silly and annoying anymore). So here we are.. on our way to start looking for another puppy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  14. Yes, that's what we've done. Other suggestions besides a digging pit. Put up a fence to stop him from going in there or lay chicken wire over the bark. Yep same here.. we were trying to grow some grass in the back corner of the yard, we fenced it off with a wire fence .. we put grass seed down and top soil etc.. we used to quite often find halle digging in the dirt... I'd go outside and she would be so deep down in the ground I could just see her bum sticking out the top! She always managed to jump over the fence but once busted, conveniently forgot how to get back over. After storming out there RAGING waving arms around at her, we got in the corner of the yard, picked her up and literally threw her over the fence (it was only 1m high about 3 feet away LOL) and she never did it again. Well, we never saw her doing it and the grass started to grow. Laying chicken wire down flat is a great idea. We did this with a few small patches of grass in our lawn and worked wonders.
  15. Same story as Diva here.. arrived to us from interstate with fleas (again, from a registered breeder). We washed her in flea rinse to remove what was on there and then gave her a fix of frontline. She was 8 weeks old, and there were no side effects.. except for no more fleas!!!
  16. LorenaMM Don't leave the forum just because you asked for people's opinions and they gave them to you.. if you don't want to know, don't ask. This forum will prove to be invaluable over the next few months and years. SO many very knowledgeable dog owners, breeders, showers etc. I, personally, have my dog sleep inside in her crate. She spends 3 full days of the week outside on her own, so she is an inside and outside dog. When I'm home, its both. She has spent many nights outside in her kennel.. which is a very sturdy warm one as we live where it gets verrrrry cold. We noticed that it affected her "manners", if you will, when she started spending time inside again the following days. Don't know why. Perhaps because she had free range to do whatever she wanted throughout the night outside, including playing, toileting etc. She also barked at any animal that went by.. possums, cats etc. When she sleeps inside, she is put in her crate(and door locked shut) at night when we decide, then let out in the morning, again at our decision. She does not have the run of the house just because she sleeps inside. Quite the opposite. The breed of puppy you are getting is notoriously known for wanting to be around human company. It's definitely something to consider.
  17. To the OP, you'd be hard pressed to find a DOL member that doesn't support, or is totally against, crate training. It is just that good! No its not necessary. But my gosh it will make your entire life with your dog 100 times easier!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But I have not found a better way to help my dog get through the night without needing to pee (since 9 weeks of age), assist with car travel, stays at the vet, sleeping in unfamiliar territory, training in general. Like a PP, all Halle needs to be told is "in your crate" and, well, in she goes! Never had a problem with it-she loves it Just chilling out!
  18. Me me me!! But like others have said, what one dog likes and agrees with may not suit another dog. Halle has only just switched over from Puppy to adult food and loves it Well its the same brand just less fat I think?! Her poops have always been of a solid consistency.. except once when she got sick cause my parents gave her too many pieces of cabanossi because they thought she was so clever doing all her tricks LOL Chicken wings are great while they are so little.. takes them a while to get through. Once Halle got to about 7-8 months she was devouring them within about 3 minutes! We then mainly used bigger bones so she could give her teeth and jaw a workout!!
  19. Because he has already got what he wanted-to run free... why would he listen to you now? He's already been given the reward. Don't ask your dog to do anything. Demand it. If you know he won't do something OFF lead, always ensure you use the command when he is onlead. Don't set him up for failure if you know he won't respond. By keeping him onlead, you can enforce your command (physically, gently, calmly) without him running away.
  20. My first thought would be to stop I guess thats where we all very in our opinions though We didn't play this game with Halle for two reasons... it was too easy for us to give up and let her win just to end the game. This was only going to spur her on even more and make an already overly confident pup even more confident (and seemingly in charge). Secondly, she used to get down and growl, and if it slipped, she'd snap at it again, sometimes narrowly missing her teeth. When she growled at us, she got a big stern "UGH!!!" and we literally snatched the toy from her and stopped play for about 1min, with our backs turned to her. Then resumed again. If we had to do that 3 times, the game was over for good. I guess it all depends what you want in your dog and what you want them to learn-for us it was totally undesirable behaviour so we stopped it very quickly. You could also start using a word like "give" or "mine" to help him learn to drop something to give to you.. he will learn eventually and it doesnt hurt to start noise association (I say noise because dogs don't understand words, they associate noise, which is our words, to the action required LOL) early on
  21. Firstly, god on you for ignoring the barking.. not easy sometimes! As for when he barks at you after praising him for being quiet, a loud, stern sharp "UGH UGH!!" and walking away might help.. to try at least. The aim is for him to learn that barking like that, whether you're 10m away or 1m away, will result in you ignoring him. Whatever you decide to try, make sure you stick to it few good few days at least
  22. Sadly no.. we found that Halle simply grew out of it.. she was at her worst at about 20 weeks. We ended up just having to always take her to the toilet and be very vidulent before someone came to the house, or anything happened that was likely to excite her.. Not much help, but thats what happened with us
  23. I know, its hard to think these dogs would be scared of anything! Normally it happens at around 10-12 months, and then I think again at about 14 months? Yay..lol
  24. Boz looks like he had a ball! Some big pups there at pre-school!
