She's here and settled but has a bad skin condition which could take a while to get under control. I am hoping she fits in and stays although I didn't really want another dog at this point in time. One way or another we will give her time to get in good shape and then we will decide. I will try to post pics later.

My little rescue boy used to get bad car sickness, I think it was one of the biggest reasons his previous owners didn't want him. I have almost cured him, I started by crating him on the floor in the front, with a towel over so he was in complete darkness, as soon as he stopped getting sick I removed the towel. Once he was ok with that I let him ride on the passanger seat with the window down a little. Now over a year on he is fine in the front with fresh air, but if he is put in the back or the windows are closed with the heater on, he will spew.

I would also invest in a good dog dryer, it will make maintenance a lot easier in between grooming visits.

I was speaking to a friend yesterday she works with a lady that I adopted out a dog to about 4 1/2 years ago. I found out the lady was looking for a home for her so I mentioned she should bring her back. Friend comes over this morning and tells me the dog is already at her house. I haven't seen this girl in so long and I am now sitting here in anticipation waiting for her to arrive. She was one of my favourite rescues but at the time we had too many dogs for her to stay forever. I feel sad and excited at the same time.

Sounds like incontinance as others have suggested, get her to the vets to have a urine sample tested. While you are there ask about a product called 'Urine Off wipes', you can wipe down her back end and underneath with them, they will neutralise the urine, get rid off the smell and helpstop scalding.

I personally am not a huge fan of black dogs mainly because they don't photograph well and they age faster. I do however love dobes and think they are beautiful in black.

My standard poodle girl is also a rabbit and guinea pig killer, she lives happily with 3 cats and 2 small dogs. We have rabbits and piggies again but I have gated off the side of the house so there is no way for my girl to reach them. If the kids want to bring theminside the dogs get locked out first. Please don't be angry at your dog it's an instinct for many dogs to chase (kill) when they come face to face with a prey animal.

Some Breeds Less 'smelly' Than Others?
Rascalmyshadow replied to jacqui835's topic in General Dog Discussion
I haven't read through all of the posts but I grew up with GSD's and they always smelled doggy and dropped hair everywhere, if they rubbed past you (especially when wearing black) the hair would be stuck all over your clothes. I think they are a wonderful breed but I personally would never own one for these reasons. We now have poodles (have had up to 7 at one time) and they don't have any doggy smell, poodles that smell usually have a problem with their ears, skin or teeth. If you are looking for a compatible dog to have with a dobe have you considered a weimeraner (spelling?) I have met a few and they have all been clean beautiful dogs. -
Your Preferred Sex For Next Puppy/dog
Rascalmyshadow replied to Baileys mum's topic in General Dog Discussion
We have a multi dog home and my preference is to have 1 male with 2 or 3 females, depending on which dogs I had at the time whether I would get a male or female. I have found in a house with more than 1 boy mixed with females the boys are more likely to cock their legs on everything. I prefer to train with males, I find them more responsive but females seem to be more independant and happy to hang around you without being on top of you. Of course there are always plenty of acceptions. -
Recommendation For Chiro Or Bowen Please
Rascalmyshadow replied to Fastgals's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Barry Haywood in Pearcedale? is awsome, he is an excellent chiro. We have used him after spending a couple of $1000 on a dog with no answers, he had the problem fixed in 3 visits. -
Any Good Groomers These Days?
Rascalmyshadow replied to jenny239's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
It is easier to charge for breed because they are usually similar so will take around the same amount of time. I am amazed how much some groomers will charge that cage dry their dogs, I disagree with this process 100% and the owners should be charged less because it means they can do many more dogs in a day. I also think lots of people get ripped off with the price of double coated breeds that need to have their undercoat groomed out (with the acception of a couple of breeds), if the right process and equiptment is used the work should't be that hard. -
Any Good Groomers These Days?
Rascalmyshadow replied to jenny239's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I am a groomer in Melbourne, I charge $60 for little fluffies that includes nails, plucked ears and anal glands which many groomers won't do. I charge $44 to clip off a cat not sedated, if they need sedating the vets charge an extra $5.50 but if an anesthetic is required the price jumps dramatically. I am also disgusted at the amount of groomers that have no care for the animals and only see $$$. I recently had surgery on my right hand and was off work for 6 weeks, I had numerous clients come back very upset about other groomers that they had taken their dogs to, some of the jobs were appalling. -
Puppy Sniffer yeah I loved my afghan but couldn't face having another so soon maybe in years to come. We have also got 2 poodles and a little lhasa x silky? I wanted a dog that was suitable for the kids and one I could dress up LOL. I have been interested in them for quite a while but my OH always said no because he thought they were creepy.

Changing Fur Colour
Rascalmyshadow replied to luv mini schnauzers's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I agree to see a good chiro, this happened to one of our standard poodles shortly before we noticed he had a sore back. Vets couldn't work out what was wrong with him either. I have also seen it happen to dogs that have had hot spots. -
I had a backyard incident years ago with one of our APBT's, she was like Snoopy and her favourite place was sitting on top of her kennel. I was about to clean it out so was bent over to lift off the roof when she decided to run and jump on top, her head hit me in the nose at full pelt. I had so much stinging in my eyes it took a few minutes to realise I had blood pouring out my nose, how it wasn't broken I don't know but I felt like I'd been hit by a bus lol.

As some may know we lost our afghan recently to a possible brain tumour with meningitis symptoms. The house seemed too quiet (even with 3 other dogs) so I decided to adopt a funny little dog we have named Edward or Eddie for short. He is a hairless crestie and is around 2 years old. He has fitted in well and loves the kids. When he is really happy he spins a couple of circles then scratches the floor and jumps lol. He sleeps under the covers most nights and thinks the other dogs make great cushions. He is very timid with strangers including our family members when they come to visit, we are working on that. He loves car rides and has been coming to work most days with me and my old poodle, Bella. Here are a couple of pics, one close up and the others in his jammies ready for bed. He has a rather extensive wardrobe already including numerous t-shirts, hoodies, tracksuits, coats and of course jammies.

Shilo Is Seriously Sick. Last Update.
Rascalmyshadow replied to Rascalmyshadow's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Final update: Shilo went downhill too much last night, I took her into work and she was PTS this morning. I was able to hold her and say goodbye. Everywhere I turn there is reminders of her, even with three other dogs in the house it seems too quiet. Thankyou for all the advice and thoughts. -

Another update: Shilo is not doing well, we think there may be a brain tumour causing meningitis symptoms, we are giving her until Friday and if there is no improvement we will likely PTS. I can't get my head around how she was perfectly happy one day and then so sick the next, I wish I could work miracles and get her back to her goofy old self. -
Shilo Is Seriously Sick. Last Update.
Rascalmyshadow replied to Rascalmyshadow's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Just an update for anyone interested, Shilo has again improved she is no where near 100% but is now eating and drinking and her temp has come down. I think steroid responsive meningitis could definately be what we are dealing with nothing else makes sense. She has been put on to 40mg of cortisone and she now weighs 23kg,we weighed her yesterday and she has lost 3kg in a week. Red Dog NZ has your dogs activity levels gone back to normal? What were they like before the ilness was diagnosed? Shilo has always been a dog that would tire quickly and I am wondering if there is an underlying cause we are missing, after speaking to a few afghan people this is not normal. -

Just when I thought things were going well Shilo has lapsed and ended up back at the vet this morning. Her temp went up to 40.4 she is still on Baytril, the cortisone dose has been nearly tripled, they have also started her on antirobe and valium. There is definately something going on with her neck hopefully the chiro will help on Monday. -

Update on Shilo, she is home and doing well, still a little weak but she is eating and drinking and back to behaving like her normal self. Bloods didn't show anything significant, her chest xray showed a slightly enlarged heart but but the vets don't think it's bad enough to cause a problem. At the moment we have no answers the only the that has helped her improve is cortisone, the vets don't know why. She is also still on Baytril just incase there is infection somewhere. She is booked to see the chiro on Monday. I was thinking meningitis especially since the symptoms seemed to match but the vets didn't tink so. Thanks for all the well wishes we are very happy she is ok, hopefully she doesn't have any more episodes. -

I don't think it is a reaction to the Rimadyl, she only ended up getting one dose (on Friday morning) because she wouldn't eat and I was too worried about giving it to her on an empty stomach. Sorry didn't say that in the original post it was too late and I couldn't think clearly. I spoke with the vets this morning and there is no improvement, part of the bloods have come in and there is abnormalities but nothing conclusive they need to see the rest for a diagnosis. I think something might be goingon with her liver. I rang the chiro to cancel her appointment and askedabout coming to my work to treat her and he wasn't too keen. -

I thought the same thing, I actually booked her in to see a chiro tomorrow but that was before everything escalated. Hopefully I can change her appointment for later in the week. Biggest problem is not being able to come off the drip until she will drinkon her own. Off topic I hope we can still catch up with my standard girl, I should have recovered well enough from my surgery in a couple of weeks. -
Shilo Is Seriously Sick. Last Update.
Rascalmyshadow posted a topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
On Thursday night my affie girl didn't seem her usual self just a little quieter and slower than usual, Friday morning she was a little stiff (we had seen her slip on the floor a day or two before) so I gave her breaky and a Rimadyl. By the afternoon she had gone down hill and screamed when we touched her. Took her to the vets and they couldn't find much, her temp was slightly elevated so she was given a tamagesic injection and sent home with Tramadol. At home she became almost comatosed with no response at all, after a couple of hours we started to get a response. At 9.30pm she started whimpering it went on til just after 6.00am. Saturday she woke up and could barely move, called the vet and they said to continue with the Rimadyl as well as the tramadol to help with any pain or inflamation. All day she lay in the same spot but quiet. Gave her the tramadol at about 8.30pm, she was very unresponsive again and her tongue was hanging out the side of her mouth. I gave her water by syringe (as I had already been doing) and put her to bed. This morning she woke up and very slowly went out to the toilet, stopped to have a drink but instead just hung her head over the water bowl. She went and laid on her bed and strated the whimpering again. We rushed her back to work, her temp was 39.9, she is dehydrated so was put on fluids, she has been given Baytril for possible infection, Rimadyl injection, more Tramadol by mouth, she has had a full blood work done (we will have the results tomorrow morning), she had her eosophogus/throat xrayed for a possible blockage this afternoon, she will be having chest, neck, spinal and abdominal xrays tomorrow. We are sure she has damaged her spine or neck when she slipped, she is very stiff and holding her head low but when the vets have examined her they have got no pain response and we haven't seen any improvement on the medication. She has refused to eat or drink since friday morning but hasn't had any vomiting or runny poo so we don't think she has eaten anything bad. She has no swellings anywhere so we don't think she has been bitten by anything. Symptoms don' seem to be adding up, she is being tested for addison's just incase and today the vet mentioned a disease called myasthenia gravis but this is quite rare. Sorry for the long post but we are quite worried we will lose her and at the moment it's not looking good. If anyone has any ideas about her symptoms please let me know. -
Why Do You Like The Kinds Of Dogs You Do?
Rascalmyshadow replied to corvus's topic in General Dog Discussion
I love my poodles because they are sensitive and aware of my every move, they are always by my side and respond to all my emotions. They are exceptionally good house dogs and are a breeze to train. Even as puppies they are fun but not overly destructive. We are very compatible although on occasions if I get upset about something it affects them a lot which can be a little stressful. My afghan is perfect in a multiple dog home because she is not competitive or demanding but she still has a soft clownish nature which I love, in some ways she is the complete opposite to the poodles but in other ways they are very similar. We are also compatible and she is a less stressful dog because she doesn't feed off my emotions but I would only have an afghan with another more in your face breed. The other breed I feel I work well with is the dobermann, they are very similar to the poodles.
