Shampoo Soap Bars For Dogs?
Rascalmyshadow replied to kelpiecuddles's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
The best soap bar I know for dogs is called 'Timid Joe' haven't used it in quite some time but I remember is was quite a good product. -
There are no laws regarding harnessing or restraining a dog while grooming, it is a groomers choice. I never tether a dog to work on it and hate seeing anyone else do it. Might look safer but I would rather risk them jumping and having a chance to land correctly than jumping and hanging. Never should a dog be left on a table for any reason but every groomers I have worked in did it. Good reason I have been working alone for the past 13 years. With lifting I think it's anything over 15kgs requires two people. It is not uncommon in a grooming salon to have to lift 25kg+ dogs.

Thanks guys I bought Claudias one from pet stock but they only have the plain colours. I will go and check out Mornington, haven't been there in a while, if they don't have anything we will have at look in Beaconsfield.

Does anyone know of anywhere in the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne that stock a good range of puppia harnesses, I know I can buy online but I want to try them on first. Thanks.

I owned two pitbulls in the mid nineties, I remember about 1997 there was a scheme in Victoria to cull pitbulls and people were encouraged to bring them to their vet clinics to be euthanised for free. I decided then that I would look at another breed once I lost my two.

I Can't Understand Why
Rascalmyshadow replied to twodoggies2001's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have two dogs that have teeth removed, my pom x chi is only two and I was shocked to find he needed two teeth out. Our rescue poodle had disgusting teeth when he arrived and he had about four out. My twelve and a half year old poodle has never had a dental and her teeth are beautiful, so are the other two dogs. Genetics seems to be a bigger problem than diet although feeding Mydog is a good way to cause problems. -
A thread in off topic got me thinking about how much I love having chooks, we have had so many types of pets over the years ( rabbits, mice, rats, guinea pigs, ferrets, ducks, snake, birds etc) and so far the chooks are my favourite and ferrets would be my other choice.

Rather than terrier types have they considered a bichon, they are non shedding, quite robust, generally have nice temperaments and they are not as active as the other breeds mentioned.

Looking For A Great Area To Live With Dogs
Rascalmyshadow replied to snifferhound's topic in General Dog Discussion
Pearcedale is a nice place, very dog friendly, there are quite a few boarding kennels and greyhound trainers in the area, also a shelter. It is less tha half an hour from KCC and it is reasonably priced. -
What Shampoo Do You Use And Why?
Rascalmyshadow replied to skyehaven's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Three of my dogs get bathed weekly to fortnightly, one gets done twice a week and the short coat chi every month or so. For the three coated, no skin problem dogs I use either Biogroom or Chris Christesen shampoo and conditioner. The boy with skin problems gets A Malaseb bath once a week and his other weekly bath I use Pethead oatmeal and aloe shampoo. The chi gets any of the above except Malaseb. I personally wouldn't use Aloveen shampoo I have seen way too many dogs end up with dry itchy skin from using it, the conditioner is great. -
Most dogs that scoot their bums need their anal glands emptied. It's very simple and I'm surprised the vet didn't check them.

I grew up with a GSD and then a dobe x pointer, we also had a few other large x breeds and pitbulls. Almost all our family and friends had large breeds as well. One day my brother and I picked up a stray silky x , he went back to his owners but I fell in love with the ease of having a small dog. My first was a Maltx, then I became a groomer, my boss bred and showed poodles the minute I met them I was hooked. I will always have a poodle or two in the house, we have a toy and a mini at the moment but I do like having other breeds as well especially some of the little x's.

If your friend isn't able to spend over $1000 for a pedigree puppy she might not be left with too many choices. Would she consider and older puppy? A lot of breeders hold on to puppies to see how they will turn out and if they are unsuitable rehome them at a reduced fee. If she wants quite a small dog I would consider a Pomeranian, they are loyal, smart, low shedding, easy to groom, easy to train and for a little dog they can do quite a bit of exercise.

Extreme Anxiety When Being Groomed
Rascalmyshadow replied to CathyM's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Start by getting the dog done very regularly at least every 4 weeks with a very experienced patient groomer in a quiet salon preferably as a one on one appointment. The more often the grooming process gets done with only a bath and dry the more comfortable the dog will become before needing another clip. He is flicking his ears because the weight of the knots has been removed keep watch for heamatomas.he is uncomfortable around the back end because his tail and bum has been clipped too short. At home help de sensatize him using a battery operated electric toothbrush, it has a similar sound as clippers pretend to brush him while giving him rewards. -
What Do You Do With Your Dogs When You Go Out?
Rascalmyshadow replied to a topic in General Dog Discussion
We gave 5 dogs ranging in age from 11months to 12years, we give them access to loungeroom, kitchen and yard if we are not home. When we are home they are also allowed in our bedroom. Laundry and kids rooms are off limits. -

Rascalmyshadow replied to Tintin Jac's topic in General Dog Discussion
I would like it if its still available I'm in Seaford so not far away -
We have 5 dogs ranging in age from 11months to 12 years old. I also work from home, have the occasional foster and have two primary school age kids. My routine is dogs breaky is served while the kids have theirs, I walk the old girl and my young chi girl to the school with the kids. Get home take the three boys for a 30 - 45 min walk. Start work at 10, the dogs all hangout together either resting or playing. Finish work by 2:30 - 3:00, take Rascal the most active dog for a second walk to pick the kids up. They get dinner around 6 then they have a mad 1/2 hour playing, some evenings I will do some training with them as a group.

Home To House Full Of Wee... 3rd Time This Week
Rascalmyshadow replied to westiemum's topic in General Dog Discussion
I feel your pain we had the same problem until our last rescue boy left, too many boys in competition with each other. Once one did it the others would too I nearly had a mental breakdown. I tried vinegar/water solution, wasted money on urine off but neither worked well on soft furnishings then I came across a product that is wonderful gets rid of all odour and leaves a really nice smell, I have a few grooming clients use it and they have been exceptionally happy. It is called 'No vac foam carpet sanitiser and deodoriser' it is the fresh pet one, in a blue spray can and its available at woolworths. I have also used it on the mattress after my daughter wet the bed with excellent results. -
Cowboy Magic Detangler And Shine
Rascalmyshadow replied to RiverStar-Aura's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I use this product regularly and it is awsome. It only leaves the coat greasy if too much is used. I have saved many dogs ears and tails (the hair) that normally would have needed clipping off. I also use it on my poodles ears and all over my silky x shihtzu and my pom x chi it leaves them beautiful, soft and shiny. -
Cancelling Holiday To Stay With Elderley Dog
Rascalmyshadow replied to kwirky's topic in General Dog Discussion
I personally wouldn't go. About 3 months ago my husband and I decided to go away for a 3 day weekend, we took three dogs with us and left the other two dogs, cats and kids behind with my parents in law. My elderly cat and the love of my life was 14 and starting to become blind and a bit frail. As soon as we got back we noticed he had dramatically gone down hill he was euthanised four days later. I now live with the guilt that I left him behind and the stress was what caused him to deteriorate so rapidly. -
Bad Breeding Practice Advice Required
Rascalmyshadow replied to poshspice24's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have never heard of anyone else go through this problem as it is so rare in males. I feel for you and your family. We went through exactly the same thing a bout 7 years ago with an Airedale puppy, I noticed a problem by the time he was 10 weeks old the vets thought I was imagining things, he was finally diagnosed at 4 1/2 - 5 months old. We were also advised by a specialist that it is hereditary, our boy was also going into renal failure, one kidney was about a 3rd of the size it should of been. We contacted the breeder and sent them all the specialist results, the offered to give us half our money back if we went ahead with surgery or a full refund if we PTS. We ended up deciding to PTS, even if the corrective surgery worked his kidneys would likely not have coped. Good luck I hope you have a better outcome. -
Non shedding is not always due to laziness that's a little unfair. I loathe dog hair and drool yet I have 5 dogs. Two poodles,, a shihtzu x silky that is usually kept in full coat, a pom x chi that has a double pom coat and a smooth coat chi. One of the poodles gets bathed and fully blow dried every 3-4 days due to skin issues, the other three long haired dogs are washed and blow dried no less than fortnightly and the short haired chi is washed and dried monthly. The poodles are also clipped regularly and the shihtzu x is clipped for summer. I would still prefer the high maintenance of the long coats over the little hairs everywhere from the chi.
