Why I'm Glad I Didn't Go Grey Or Online....

I think CameraPro are in Victoria? They were who I quoted to Diamonds to get the price match. Just type in a search for whatever product you want, adding "genuine australian" or something similar and the sites all come up. You will get the "grey" sites as well, but the stores with Australian stock make a huge point of highlighting that on their websites. This is what I did. We only have two major dedicated camera stores here (Teds and Diamonds), but there are a couple of smaller stores who can't compete with those prices. Some of the electrical stores like JB and HN also carry the stuff as well at highly inflated prices. Harvey Norman had the 7D on sale for $2089!! I told them that I could get it cheaper and they said they didn't believe it as RRP was $1800 - that they put a $200 mark up on the camera was enough for me to say that I wouldn't ever shop for camera gear with them ever. I think I read a thread toward the end of the year about how someone had got caught with DWI import - and that DWI was being targeted by customs. I didn't want to take the risk. I would buy cards, accessories etc from them no problems. I got my 18-200 lens from them with no issues at all along with my speedlite too. -
Get hom to do like my husband did - he got me the voucher so I could design my own :) Its funny, she has some different fabrics now and different colours for the lining than when I got mine. I think my bag would be totally different if I ordered it today. I still love it though :) and then there are the fabrics that I love on some of the early examples I've seen that she obviously doesn't have anymore that I think I would have chosen instead of the one I did. still waiting for my bag..... hoping it is soon. US mail is sooo slow.

Why I'm Glad I Didn't Go Grey Or Online....

Currently - the difference in price between a grey import and the one I bought was $287 - minus any tax that might get applied if the box gets stopped by customs on the way in (been happening to DWI customers and their imports lately) - not a lot of difference - and if customs had been applied, would have been the same price I think. Not a huge difference to pay in the scheme of things. (My camera cost $1485 - Diamonds price matched the best online price for a non grey import I found that was advertised that day) A good price I thought. That's interesting to know about Diamonds. I was looking at buying my new camera body from CameraPro as they seem to be the cheapest non-grey retailer but if Diamonds will price match with them I'd rather buy it from a local Diamonds store in case there are any issues. I'll still be getting my lenses from DWI though as they're a fair bit cheaper even with GST added and as I understand it, Canon Australia will honour the warranty on grey lenses (just not camera bodies). Yep - I bought my 18-200mm IS canon lens from DWI for that reason and am happy. Am close to thinking I will get the sigma the same way when I can afford it. At the moment there is $260 price difference between a grey import and an in store price on this lens, so might go grey. But being something that is over that $1000 mark - it would add $120 to the price on the import if it gets stopped at customs.... so still thinking about it. For anything that comes in under that $1000 mark, am very happy to go grey. -
I had a Rotti living next door when I first moved in. Lovely elderly couple as neighbours, but the poor boy was lonely - he howled all night long. He also ran the fence at me, growling and barking if I went outside to hang my washing on the line. If I needed to call in on my neighbours Max (the dog) would be barking and growling and baring his teeth at the door with the wife saying to her husband "make sure you've got hold of him, he'll attack her". He would have too. I was scared of Max. In the wrong household, they can be very very scary. Having said that - I've met some lovely Rotties since I started showing. The best thing the other weekend was going to a herding clinic and watching the different breeds herd. They are all different in how they prefer to work sheep - BCs all seemed to be working a long way from the sheep. Shelties making sure that the sheep knew they were the boss and not afraid (think its a size thing and the sheep being used to bigger dogs working them), but the most interesting were the Rotts. They worked calmly and could get really close in with the sheep without the sheep freaking out and wanting to run away. Was fascinating to me anyway. They seemed gentle in this setting. Suspect that would be why 4 of them now have their herding title in SA.

Yep - there are some in this thread "Snook the Enabler" named this way because Snook's comments in another thread were what tipped me over the edge to buy it...... but here are two from today (with a borrowed sigma 70 - 200mm f2.8 lens) -
Am very very glad that I decided to buy the camera from a store and not online (as I came close to doing). These are the first three photos taken on the new 7D. Camera store exchanged straight away. mind you - rommy doesn't look that bad split in half and in green and pink.... Friend suggested I get them printed onto canvas and sold as "art" Turns out it was a corrupt processor. Store was excellent to deal with. I would not have been happy if I had to re-package and mail back, then wait for repairs or replace.... Would have sucked.

very nice.... I just got an email saying mine has been shipped.... That's a pretty quick turn around - only two weeks from when I custom ordered it. I am getting excited!

All Pets Boarding Village on Mt Barker Road at Mt Osmond (just past the tollgate) is really good. Run by a couple of very well respected DogsSA people.

Miss moo as far as I know there are different rules for each class as to what you can and can't use, like hand strip you can't use clippers or you have time deducted, the time is worked out by what skill your doing and how big the dog is. Like for instance Darkrai had 2 hours to handstrip micah as she was 14inches and under if she was bigger then 16inches he would have had 2.25hrs Most of these people own their own salon or work in a salon but anyone who registers to be a member of PIAA can do a groom, not 100% sure on that though as everyone there yesterday was a groomer or a learning groomer.. Theres different qualifications as to what class your in.. Next comp Darkrai will be in Open as he has won at novice level.. Lol I'm considering learning how to do my own dog and doing a comp.. Hehehehe I can do a gooooood lowchen well show prep anyway lol!! I got too lazy today to travel back to syd so I'm now watching the poodles from the comfort of my bed! 10:30 start they should be amazing.. Then it's groomers best in show :D where the. Best in group winners of each class go for best in show and the winer of that takes $1000 So there will be the best terrier, best Gundog, best breed scissor, best freestyle and best poodle.. I've been trying to with but not much happening? Its up and running now.. they're all scissoring poodles atm. and a guy,, annoyingly keeps walking in front of the camera on purpose - someone rang him on his mobile obviously and is telling him to do it... There is a grooming competition as part of the adelaide royal - Someone I know groomed a sheltie and came second overall. I was interested in seeing a double coated breed being groomed here - assume I've missed that? Is there a replay I could watch - there don't seem to be any on the clips at the bottom.

Was at the clinic on Saturday - and yep - would like more training opportunities. It was a pity last year that Rommy wasn't able to train - now there aren't the opportunities here at all anymore. WOuld be a shame for the work on the weekend to go to waste. Especially as we are just starting out. Great job on the organisation on the weekend HerdingSA

Has Anyone Had A Litter After A Puss Coloured Discharge
jr_inoz replied to Fordogs's topic in Breeders Community
I think "those people" ought to hear about the breeds that don't actually produce large litters..... For peace of mind, if you think the ultrasound person missed something, get an x-ray at what would have been the 8 week mark. If she's resorbed her puppies, she'll start to deflate in the next couple of weeks. It takes a little while for the uterus to contract. (Been there and done this....). X-ray will confirm if you think she may still be pregnant. -
had to remove these two.... still having fun with the camera, but really need to work out how to do the motor function and how to take movement shots. It really does handle a lot differently to the 400D.

Piper - I am sooo hoping you will be there on the Saturday - even though your dogs are further along. I need someone who can take a decent photo to get some of Rommy. I have some nice herding shots of others - I don't have them of Rommy - only a few. I will be there all weekend and last year spent all of the first day on my butt under a tre taking pics :) There is usually another person there doing the same who takes awesome pics. And if you want some with your own camera there is another girl who will be there that is a Canon user and does fantastic work (used to do the agility trials and sell her pics.) ETA: I feel your pain - I have way more photos of other peoples dogs involved in activities than of my own. I hardly have any of dear old Piper and Jazz is just difficult as she works so wide that I can have dog working or sheep and rarely both and without sheep in the frame she could be walking up on a ball or having a nice run in the paddock. Piper - I'll do you a deal - you take photos of Rommy for me, and I will take photos of your girls - you are training on the saturday?
-
ok - two photos from tonight - with an uncooperative subject. shot with 6400 iso, no flash, 50mm lens with arpeture priority. (I'm still learning - took me most of the night to work out how to set the AF on the spot I wanted). I'm pleased with the lack of noise at this high an iso. I like the clarity in the low light as well. edited - photobucket was being a pain and orientating them the wrong way...

no photos worth uploading yet. After waiting the couple of hours for the battery to charge, I did some practice shots, to make sure everything was working - and it wasn't. The LCD screen showed pictures of a nice purple, or green or pink. Or just lines running across the screen. I tried my old flash card and the camera worked fine. I rang the store and they said to bring the camera back in. It wasn't the flash card but the sensor in the camera. It was replaced. So, haven't really had a chance to actually take any shots at present..... tomorrow.... am I ever glad I decided against buying a grey import online. That would have been so annoying!

I thought all the Canon EOS cameras shot in RAW? I've only got their basic 1000D and that does RAW. Which model have you got? I thought they all did too. My 400D was one of the very early models. It is 7 or 8 years old at least. Apparently a firmware update would fix it.... But Snook - I am blaming you..... I upgraded today - just waiting for the battery to charge on my 7D....
-
So, did it today - bought a Canon 7D. Been thinking about this for about 12 months. Finally did it. Will try it out later this arvo when the battery has charged. Thanks Snook for the nudge..... well, I'm saying it was you anyway. Just have to wait for the porteen bag to arrive now. Very excited. Nice early birthday present.

thank you, ammunition....

The DogsSA website with breeder prefixes on them is hopelessly out of date. I don't think it has been touched for over 6 years. IF you want to know if a breeder has their prefix registered in the state, ring DogsSA - they will tell you. In some breeds, the breeder does produce puppies that are all of good quality - certainly the case with two or three breeders in my breed in this state. They could all certainly go on main register. Costs the breeder no more or less. Same price to register on either. I know of one case where the breeder decided to run one puppy on, put the other in another show home to run on and sold the third as a pet on mains. The breeder caught up with that owner a few months later to see that the puppy had matured into a stunning dog. The owners were encouraged to join DogsSA. They did and started coming to shows. Their dog is having some success. They are hooked. This is great for the future of our breed. Don't be frightened if a breeder wants to sell all puppies on mains. They will do it if their puppies are of good enough quality. It doesn't mean they are an unethical breeder.

I've gone the second one. (just waiting for her to get back to me about payment). just a little excited.... now for the new camera... I decided I'd like to try shooting in RAW and then discovered that whilst my camera's manual says it can shoot in raw, it actually can't. Good excuse to upgrade I reckon. Does your camera's manual cover a couple of different models? The manual for my camcorder covers two models, one with a recordable hard drive and one that needs a memory card but other than that they're identical. RAW is definitely the way to go though. I say upgrade!! (not that I'm enabling of course..) My manual is apparently only one model - and apparently mine. I suspect that the camera I have is not the model I have the manual for. Camera bought from reputable store about 6 years ago. snook - any enabling is happily received.... need as many people telling me to upgrade as possible to allay any guilt I may feel for spending money. My little eos would make a good entry level camera for someone. I should probably keep it for when I want to head out and shoot in crappy conditions and not want to risk my camera. Or when I want to have a back up.
