thank you all for your suggestions She currently gets fed Advance dry food - either sensitive skin or small breed. (She will be staying on dry food - with supplements of other things like chicken necks etc) Very interested in this - and cranky that the vet didnt suggest it. Will ask for it, Sound interesting - is that harsh on the skin? What is phisohex? where would i get it?

she is kept off the grass until she has to go on it. (Mostly at a show) Doesnt have grass to run on at home anymore. Booties wont be a good look in the show ring - so think i might need a different solution.

My girl (shetland sheepdog) has a few allergies (one of which is kykuya) and I have been using the cortisone tablets (dont want to use them much) and phenergan tablets when needed. Both help a little, as does the fish oil and the allergy shampoo. I would like a topical spray to use when things are worse than normal. I have tried quid-itch - which also helps a little bit, but even diluted, stains her fur a bit (she is a show dog, so this isnt a good solution). I read somewhere in the last few weeks a remedy involving equal parts of detol, baby oil and something else... Do you think I can find the website again? Nope. Has anyone heard of it? Do you know what the last ingredient is? It may have been vinegar - but I am unsure. Any help appreciated.

rommy's ears have always been a pain - worse during teething so i glued them for a month or more. She is in the middle of her first season and her ears are bad again - have glued them again. If you are worried about your dog's ears - tape or glue them like others have said. Important during teething - much more work if you dont work on them now.

Rural Pet Meats is great - very cheap and good stuff. I stock up on chicken necks there - and will be stocking up on chicken carcuses when rommy is old enough.

thanks guys will let you know how it all goes (least i dont have to worry about the swimming - she hates the water)

in need of advice here... my 7.5month old shetland sheepdog puppy is growing up and beautiful, generally does what is asked - but has a stubborn streak a mile long. She wont come when she is called. She will at home, in the house and in the yard. (especially if there is fritz (devon) involved). I tried in the area next to my house - comes sometimes, not at others. No hope at all if there are any distractions. (which out of the backyard is all the time... birds, smells, noises - let alone another dog or person) At obedience, when we practice recall, she will start to come toward me, then run off to meet the nearest dog. Frustrating, cos i would love her to get more exercise off lead and things at the park or beach, but cant risk it - she will run the other way if i try to catch her - and she is fast. adivce will be greatly appreciated.

ebay is where i picked up my copy - quite cheap and from someone in oz - so local postage.

7point6 - Hi - good to see you also made it to the sheltie thread. Sheltie's can be fussy (my little one is). Try and get a hold of the book "sheltie talk" - it's really really great. If you are getting confused by all the different opinions - have a chat to your local vet. Mine was great with advice on how to deal with my fussy eater - what to do if she refused food etc.

Where Are All The Groomers In Adelaide?
jr_inoz replied to hannahpug's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
there is currently only one place in adelaide to do any of the TAFE certificates in animal handling (whether the person is wanting to groom, go on to vet nursing or just help out in kennels..) Gilles Plains TAFE. Could explain the lack of people. Would suggest ringing the TAFe though if you are looking for staff - they could have students or about to graduate students who would like some work. -
Hope everything goes well tonight. Do yourselves a big favour... She may cry during the night because she is lonely. DO NOT GET UP TO HER except to toilet her. You dont want to teach her that she gets attention when she cries. You may find it hard, but she'll survive and so will you. Thankfully my breeder warned me. I had a crate (open) inside a puppy pen in my dining room for my puppy to sleep in when we came home. She cried a few times the first night, then each night after that she settled quite quickly. Enjoy - puppy is the best time and it goes so quickly!

Thats fantastic! We have tried everything, hot water bottle, clock, toys, having him next to me etc etc. He just gets himself worked up into such a state. We know we are supposed to let him cry but surely night after night of stress is not good for him. have you tried the talk back radio trick? works for my puppy

was going to suggest that - it was the deciding factor for me when i bought my canon DSLR. I already had a canon SLR (film) that had lenses that would be compatible to the digital one. Makes sense then.
-
I love my canon 300D. A really good beginner camera i think - easy to understand instruction book. easy to understand controls too - at least i thought so.

i'd be worrying if i wasnt there that the dog would choke on the broken balloon rubber

when i was a young girl growing up - my aunt bought me two mason pearson pure bristle brushes - one pocket and one large - for my hair. I was supposed to do 100 strokes per night. They are the best things for your scalp. I still have them (38 years later) and they are in excellent condition. when i got my puppy - i thought - excellent - i have two brushes i can use - turns out i cant - because they are just the boar bristle - and not the combination, they wont penetrate the long coat of my sheltie.

gave one to my puppy a couple of weeks ago - recommended as she is teething... she had 'sloppy' poo for just over a week - that only stopped after a visit to the vet and some medicine. too much fat, too rich for her. gone back to chicken necks - (which, thanks to luke's advice) - i give to her frozen... dont want to hijack the thread - and will start another one if people want - but has anyone tried those kong 'ziggys'? They seems safe to me and good for her teething?

What i think made a difference for my puppy was having a radio on in the room tuned to the ABC (talk back radio). my puppy cried three times during the night the first night home, but the breeder had emphasised not getting up to her - so i didnt. She had water, was warm, she was fine. The second night - she cried for three minutes when she went to bed. The third night one minute - the fourth night 30secs. I had her in her crate (door open) inside a puppy pen in the dining room (away from the bedroom). She fusses a little (apparently only for half a minute) when i leave for work in the morning. But then she is fine. Way too many things to occupy her. Be brave, we've all been there.

I'm a plush puppy fan too

Neither of her parents have a known grass allergy (but the breeder has different grass at his place). SACA park is full of kykuya and a couple of his dogs have a sensitivity to it (aunt and uncle to the puppy i think..) thanks everyone - off to the vet we go...

3 months old - can she be tested this young?
-
my puppy chews her feet and other bits of herself, and scratches quite a bit. She doesnt have fleas or other insect bites or anything. SOmeone suggested she may be allergic to my lawn (Kykuya i think - she is a sheltie puppy and apparently it is not unusual?) Is there anything i can get for her? (An allergy cream or spray) Or should i rip up my lawn and plant a different species (santa ana cooch has been suggested) Really dont want to rip up the lawn if i can avoid it.

I want to know how to stop my puppy from trying to bit my legs and feet while we are walking. we were doing really well - but now every time we try some lead training - she tries to bite my feet. any suggestions? I have tried a few things - rewards and praise when she does the right thing (if only a couple of steps). Should i say no and stop when she tried to bite - or is this just rewarding bad behaviour? Have no idea what to do. she is too young to go out yet - three weeks to go (injections this weekend coming!) any suggestions appreciated oh yeah - she also doesnt seem to care much about treats - even when she is hungry - except small pieces of cheese - but only for a few minutes.
-
timely thread My puppy threw up last night after her dinner (rehydratable food). She ate then decided to run around a lot, very very fast. She then threw up. She seems fine since - except for the wanting to eat her vomit last night - made me feel sicker than her. She seems happy today though. I am trying to keep her a little quiet after meals now.
-
I hope not. I used that spray on the concrete today to try and stop her from chewing that - you know the stuff you can get that dogs dont apparently like to keep them off your garden and stuff. Yeah - she likes that too. (good thing i havent used much of it at all) Anyone know of anything else that i can use?
