  1. I have litter knowledge of this in dogs but I know from all the wildlife docs I have watched the alpha female controls the other females reproduction.

I recall David Attenborough, I think, stating that if a female sneaks off and gets preggers she can be killed by the alpha female.

A friend of mine years ago lets her girls out fora run, probably crated during the day. When she did not return she went to look for her and found her dead and mangaled by the others. Cannot recall how far preg and thsi was cavs.

Also the alpha female will kill the offspring if born.

just found this article - an interesting read....

  2. very interested in hearing replies.

My girl reabsorbed a litter at the start of the year for no apparent reason (pregnant and 6.5 weeks, still fat at 7.5weeks, not fat and no puppies at 8.5 weeks). Another more dominant bitch in the house at the time - very very similar situation to the original post.

  3. This lady is in Canada and makes leads custom to what you want.

    http://hitidekangarooleads.shawwebspace.ca/

I have quite a few of her leads and they are brilliant. I have not seen a leather braided lead here in Australia made to the same quality as hers. They are also priced competitively.

Some of her leads look a bit fragile - but they are braided around a strong double 100lb core - so are tested for really strong animals. She can also braid a thicker lead if required. Martingdales to what ever measurements you need.

  4. As far as I was aware....

A registered breeder is someone who is a member of their state's canine association, and has a prefix registered with them. And follows the code of ethics for registered breeders.

Anything else is other people's 'play on words' to deceive the general public.

    (bias view of course)

  5. Sounds like the grass. Quite a few dogs have a grass allergy. Mine is funny - she is fine on couch - allergic to kikuyu. I had my grass changed over to couch (a small patch, that was pretty patchy anyway). She's been fine since. I avoid it on walks and will no longer do 'down stays' at obedience for any length of time as the grass there is kikuyu.

Washing their feet will help, but keeping them off it altogether will be best.

  6. Can anyone recommend a good shampoo for sensitive skin? The vet has advised me to use Malaseb on my Bichon but it is meant to stay on the dog for 10 minutes which is a little difficult to manage.

Malaseb is a medicated shampoo for treating some skin conditions, if you do not leave it for the required time it is not as effective, what are you treating?

If you are just looking for a general shampoo then there are many to choose from but it may be trial and error to find one that suits your dog. Aloveen, Fidos Everday, Groomers EPO, all good shampoos, but you need to try them on your dog.

Crisovar the vet was a bit vague about it - just said that his skin was red in some areas particularly around the mouth. He also recommended a leave in medicated conditioner. I will try some of the others you and Mason mentioned. Thanks

I use plush puppy for sensitive skin - but my girl has a general sensitivity and not what you are describing.

Can I suggest you look closely at your dog's water bowl? If it is ceramic, make sure the glaze isn't coming off or causing irritation. I've know someone whose dogs were affected and took awhile to track down, but it was the water bowl. Also check if your dog is chewing on weeds or something that would irritate.

  7. I might consider making another logo if I have time.. I was thinking about doing the rainbow scheme as well but all my degree buddies whom I asked opinions from about ideas said that it would remind them of gay/lesbian dog logos and not to steer down that path

Didn't even think of that - although I've got a feeling that most dogs are bi ;)

    mine is.....

quick question..... what program are most of you using to create your logos?

I need to work on one (for something else) and am struggling a lot! (trying to use paint).

  8. Personally, for me, I don't like that this forum, which is kept relatively politics free, can be cross posted to facebook, where there are definitely no boundaries.

I don't want my posts in here able to be shared in another forum without me making a decision to post there.

I understand the need to keep up, and I don't think that having the dogs profiles being able to be shared on facebook is necessarily a really bad thing, (although I don't like it) but I think that having topics and threads from the forum being able to be shared on Facebook is a bad thing.

You obviously don't visit facebook much. Topics on here are regularly cross posted and discussed already.

I use facebook all the time and have only seen the odd topic crossed over, and only very recently. I am obviously not political enough, or, more truthfully, am not "friends" with the "right" people

    Sounds like me.

Am on facebook all the time (more than here) and am yet to see a topic cross-posted from DOL

  10. Gee you are quick to spot it.

It has now been fully implemented on the profiles. It is switched off by default. You can switch it on by editing the profile and selecting the relevant option.

The Facebook Likes and Google+ will be added to various parts of the site over the next week. As much as I do not like facebook, I need to get 'with it' or be left behind as facebook is a big part of the dog community. Google+ is also important as it will influence Google search results over time.

I understand why, perfectly well, but it is going to add another dimension to show politics along with the DOL pointscore

  11. all the preferences I put in for were to do with my name.

My surname is to do with water.... so I had thought of a few things like smirr (which is scottish gaelic for rain) and mist etc

my first initial is j - worked out how to make that into a syllable and so..... jaemist. It is basically my name. was my third or fourth preference. I quite like it now.

  12. Yes, they should search worldwide - with that said they also say they will not approve common names, places etc

yet they do. I see it often when updating the database http://www.prefixsearch.com.au

For a newbie like myself wanting to get a prefix, what are the steps? I heard there was a test? I also wouldn't want the same prefix as someone else.

How does one search world-wide to see if a prefix you'd like has been taken? Is it just a question of googling it?

I didn't check anything first and tried to come up with combinations of syllables I liked that meant something to me. Got my fourth choice I think. What I found interesting afterwards, when I was telling people - there is an prefix registered in the US that is very very similar to mine. Mind you - they only took 2 weeks to get back to me after I posted the form off - so figure the search wasn't that extensive..

  13. Wow that's crazy!! There are maltese x shih tzus at the pet shop near us for $750!!! No papers and advertised as pure bred!! (I was so tempted to ask the man behind the desk how a cross bred dog can be pure bred lol)

someone I know has a "purebred maltese-shitzu" because both parents were a 'maltese-shitzu' :banghead:

I have to bit my tongue all the time.

  14. Should have taken a photo of my girl tonight - running around the house with the last of her bone in her mouth, crying a little. Seems she got it stuck on her teeth a little bit and couldn't get it off to finish eating it. Very pleased when i got it unstuck for her. She'll also cry like that if she has eaten as much as she wants to, but doesn't want to put it down anywhere in case she loses it.

  15. Breed specialty shows in particular are invaluable for seeing what is good and what isn't in your breed.

There are a few dogs in my breed that win under all breed judges, (who don't know my breed very well at all), that never ever win even a class under a specialist breed judge.

If you want to see what makes a good dog of your breed, go to your breed's specialty show. Personally think that showing at these shows is important too - it is how you know if your dog is of a good standard. Helpful to have them critiqued too which often happens at a specialty.

  16. I like the German SV system where you basically have to serve an "apprenticeship" with an established Breeder before you can get your own kennel prefix.

You "hold" the Breeders dogs (but dont legally own them - it's a bit like our Breeders terms), show and train them and under the Breeder's prefix and guidance, you will whelp a litter(s) and raise it.

That way, the Breeder is still responsible for their animals and their pups but the new person gains mentoring and experience. GSD litters are also assessed while with the "holder" by a Breed Warden who is available for mentoring and assistance, in addition to the Breeder.

I think that it is too easy here to get a prefix. I'd like to see at least that you have to pass some kind of short education course, not just an open book exam, which is a joke. If you cant commit to some learning, maybe you should not be breeding dogs.

Don't even need the exam in SA - I filled out the form, paid my money and two weeks later, got my letter back with my kennel prefix.

    Very easy....

Having said that - I like the German system you have mentioned above.

  17. With the other 3 bitches being on heat maybe she is the bottom of the pack and as such will come on heat when the others are finished.

One of mine started to come on and then the matriarch came on heat and she went off only to come on when the older bitch finished.

    interesting....

(wonder what my GP friend, who loves finding the correlations between human and canine reproduction would say to this?)

  18. Mine all get c5 vaccinations, I've never had an issue with it (considering one dog gets sick at the drop of a hat I've been happily surprised!) and would continue with my current vaccination protocol. I considered moving to the three year vacc but this area gets parvo severely and I don't want to risk it. I could get titre testing done, but if someone came back with low results and needed revaccinating, I wouldn't be able to afford both (I generally only work 3 days a week).I think the only wrong thing in vaccinations is to not vaccinate ever. Do what you feel is right for your pet.
I don;t get your way of thinking. If the area you live in is " high parvo, as you say, then the dogs immunity would be challenged due to living there. Once you vaccinate and the dog develops immunity, you can't give it additional immunity by injecting it every year. The dog either has it or it doesn't.

I don't yet trust the three year vacc. We vaccinated (through one of my workplaces) a few dogs and later that year they got mild parvo. Coincidence or not, I will not change to a vaccine I cannot trust fully.

ETA - if it turns out my dog has an immune disorder, I think it would be better to vacc yearly than every three years IMHO. But thats just me.

trying to understand here..... Isn't the parvo component of the C3 vaccination the same as the parvo component of the C5?

  19. I was thinking a few months ago that one possibility could be to allow dogs and owners who have their canine good citizen award (or an equivalent) to have increased access.

This way responsible owners with well behaved pets would be rewarded for the effort they have put in, and be able to more easily include their dog in daily activities.

It also means that some of the problems associated with increased access would be avoided.

Oh no. Not another revenue raiser, it won't come for free. More licences, certificate, papers, rules, whatever. It will become so hard to own a dog that in the end no one will bother except maybe the moron types who do what they want regardless.

    why would it be hard?

If you don't want extra access you don't bother.

For people who already go to training clubs, show, or compete with their dogs it would be hardly any extra work at all.

If you do want extra access it would be worth the bit of exrta effort.

    I like the idea.

Most councils in SA have a reduction in registration for a trained dog. You have to show a certificate to show that it has reached a certain level of training. This could just be broadened a bit more.

  20. My girl has had the C5 vaccination each year since she was 12 weeks of age. She has also had very itchy skin.

I didn't get her vaccinated this year - am switching to the recommended triennial protocol.

I am not having anywhere near the issues with itchy skin with her that I had before.

I am now trying to remember back to work out if her itchy skin started with her first C5 vaccination.

Will be switching to C3 triennial I think.
