My parents GSD is the same. He won't eat anything cold but he does eat raw if it's warmed slightly (or at least room temp). He's mainly eating chicken frames at the moment.

My dad bought a whole lot of clearance packets of diced hearts and livers from woolies for their fussy GSD. Well he won't eat them so they have passed them onto me to give to my guts. I thought she would eat anything but she doesn't seem too keen on these. She does eat them eventually when she realises she isn't getting anything else. I'm trying them cooked tonight but does anyone have any other ideas of how I can prepare them so she enjoys them more? I seriously have a huge bag of them.

^ I soak mine in warm soapy water and use a botttle brush to clean. Willow does a pretty damn good job of cleaning them out herself though

I use penut butter sometimes, cheese, beef strips torn up, bone shaped dog biscuits, you can get special Kong brand biscuits in Big W, Kmart and pet supply stores. I have used apple before too. And pet mince.

Can you give dogs melon? I tried feeding apple once but I don't think she liked it. (I put it in her Kong and it was still there when I got home)

My female was two hundred and something... there was some other charges so I can't remember the exact cost, she was about 12 kg when we desexed her. I could have got it done cheaper if I had driven about an hour to another vet but paid extra (although I thought it was still reasonable) to go to my preferred vet (we took our cats there, sister takes her dogs there etc.)

Thanks, I'm trying not to worry. It's hard to tell if she is lethargic since she normally sleeps all day anyway and that's what she's doing now. She is alert and comes when I call her though. I'll take her for a walk later and see how she is then.

My dog just vomited up her whole breakfast. I was standing at the back door and saw her do it. I went out and poked around with a stick (yes, gross I know but I was worried). It was all her kibble she had for breakfast and a big piece of something I couldn't recognise. I asked my OH and he said that he had dropped a bit of beef from his chinese food he had for lunch and she had eaten it. She seems fine otherwise. She has thrown up small amounts before, once a piece of beef heart from her dinner and once it was just some grass that she had eaten. Should I be worried?

That's awesome. What an inpsiration.

^ I have "spot cleaned" her before between baths but this time she doesn't even have any dirt on her at all. It's been cold and she is such a sook about going outside when it's cold or wet. The house being cold might be a blessing in disguse as every day the two cats inch closer and closer to the dog in front of the heater... every day brining us one step closer to the lucrative photo of all our pets in one frame muhahahaha

Thanks for the replies everyone. Dog geek - that's how I bathed her at first, with just containers of water in an ankled deep bath but it is really time consuming and not as effective as being able to give her a proper rinse. I have no need to tie her to the bath thankfully, she doesn't enjoy baths but she does stand quietly at tolerate it. She just looks at me sadly and makes me feel horrible We live in a freezing cold house unfortunately, no carpet or insulation and really draughty, maybe I will try giving her a bath at night when she can sit in front of the heater, or skip this month altogether as she isn't dirty at all really. Failing all that it's nice to know I would be welcome at a groomer, when I look in this area and it's all about this clip or that clip I didn't know if I would look silly bringing her in just for a bath.

Help And Suggestions When Leaving My Dog
vnv replied to daccydog's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I know it may not be the best option but my dog looks forward to us leaving now because that's when she gets all her toys and treats. We give her 2 kongs, some other rubber toys and usually a bit of something to chew like a pigs ear or trotter. Sometimes she also gets her breakfast in her treat ball. She has some other toys she plays with when we are at home (rope toy and frisbee) and her special toys only come out when we leave. -
Excuse my total ignorance on this matter. I have a medium sized, very short coated mix that I got from the pound. I bathed her at home at first but it is really hard. In this weather she already gets very cold if without her jacket on and I don't have the equiptment to keep her warm in the bath (We have seperate taps for hot and cold in our bathroom, so it's hard to use warm water) Last time she was bathed (1 month ago) it was at a DIY Dogwash that has since closed. Can I take her to a groomer just for a bath, or is this not the sort of thing they do? I guess it's like going to a hairdresser just to have your hair washed and nothing else, seems a bit weird to me. She is an inside dog and has been wearing a jacket everytime she goes outside lately. I bath her once a month and she is due for her next bath. She is not dirty at all right now and doesn't smell, do you think it's acceptable to bath her less frequently now it's getting cold? Thanks.

I had this with my dog, the vet banadaged it really well when she was under for her desex. It split again when the bandage was removed so I used elastoplast and left it on for over a fortnight. It healed enough then not to split again and now the fur has grown back fully. I think it was from wagging her tail against the brick walls in the pound. The vet did tell me that she would amputate if the problem continued.

Omg, I just read the other thread and I was really hoping he would pull through.... I'm so sorry RIP Asher

Both clubs I've looked into invite all members to the committee meetings, maybe you could go along and suggest it there. Or if you don't want to take such formal steps maybe just bring it up to one of the trainers in converstation like "I've been thinking about doing flyball with my dog... is it something the club has ever considered?" or something.

How Do You Tell If A Dog Is Cold, While Sleeping?
vnv replied to Daxilly's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My dog shivers when she's cold. My OH also said that if her ears are cold then she is cold. Is that a good indication? -
These are so beautiful and such a nice thing to do but fortunately I don't need one!! What gorgeous doggies they all were.

I don't have any input (sorry!) but I would love to be able to buy a book like this. I know it's for your HSC but are you going to consider publishing? Please let us know when you finish as I am sure many would be interested in the final product

Puppy Classes + General Obedience Classes
vnv replied to joebloe's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Brush farm is awesome and very reasonably priced. -
She was beautiful... my parents have a GSD... they are too smart for their own good sometimes... can open all the doors and gates. I'm sorry for your loss. It's my (and I'm sure many others) worst fear.

This is so sad... I'm sorry for your loss and you didn't let her down. RIP

Willow is my first dog and I got her from the pound last November where I told she was approx 6months old. (She hasn't grown at all in the time I've had her though). I lived with my parents at that time and they had a pure bred GSD who was about 1yr old at that time. They played together, really roughly and Willow sometimes got little puncture marks on her skin (as I'm sure the GSD did too judging by the way she would bite him). Willow would sometimes get tired of playing and jump the fence to get away from the GSD. She sometimes went next door and slept on the neighbours couch. She never ran away though. Once (in total ignornace) I took her to an off-leash park. There were no other dogs there, just two guys playing with a football and she was running around happily. I saw two people coming with one dog (black staffy) off leash and another dog on a leash. I moved away from them, however they came right up to us as they wanted the dogs to play. Willow played with the black staffy, wagging tails, bowing etc. Then when the people got right up to us Willow came over to sniff the other dog who was still on a leash. They were sniffing each other when suddenly without so much as a growl they were fighting. Willow had a hold of the other dogs leg and was shaking her so the male owner of that dog started stomping hard on the back of Willows neck. One of the guys playing football ran up and grabbed Willow off the other dog and she showed no other signs of aggression (she didn't show any signs of aggression before either, she didn't make a sound the whole time). Since then I have been terrified of a repeat performance. I took her to obedience 3 times where she became very over excited and whimpered, whinged, pulled and wouldn't pay any attention to me at all. The third and last time we went there, one of the volunteers went out of her way to repeatedly tell me and my OH that she was basically a rotten dog and we should get private training I stopped going after that (in retrospect I probably should have ignored that woman). So now I don't know what to do. Willow learns quickly at home and I have kept training her basics. But what about socialisation? My OH has a friend that lives nearby who has two dogs - both have attacked other dogs in the past. Besides my parents GSD and my sisters two SWF's these are the only other dogs we know. On walks Willow either completley ignores other dogs, or becomes totally unmanagable, lunging at the end of her leash (even if we just hear some dogs and can't see them). I don't know if this is aggression or she just wants to play. But then she will walk past a fence with three little yapping dogs behind it without batting an eyelid. I would love some advice of what to do and I am completly open to some (constructive) personal critisism as I know I have made some mistakes along the way. I'm just not sure of what to do from here. One member here has kindly recommended a private trainer which I am looking into however I don't know if that will help with the above problem.

What a wonderful long life it sounds like he had. He looks like he was a wonderful, loving pet. Wishing you all the best.. he will always be alive in your memory. RIP.

How horrible it must have been to watch and unable to do anything :D He sounds like he died having a great time running though the forest. RIP little one.
