What is the special food they have been prescribed? Can they get it cheaper online? (vetnpetdirect.com or similar) Why was the food prescribed exactly? (what is his condition?) My boy was recently diagnosed with Diabetes and has to eat Royal Canin Digestive Low Fat BUT as a treat I can give him roast chicken (preferably the brest as it's least fatty)

Bleach... !? I've worked at several salons and they are all cleaned with bleach.

My Greyhound Hazel does it also when she is excited or anxious.

Have you contacted your vet? I would not be messing around with the insulin dose without consent from the vet. Their glucose levels will change depending on what they eat and how much they eat. Have you changed her diet in the slightest at all? Did she find something in the yard and eat it?

Back on my computer with internet now. He is still doing really well and sucking his food down! Doesn't mind the injections either and they are very easy to give. I just have to accept the fact that I will never sleep in again!!

Bit of a delay, but I picked up Sweep today. He was SO happy to see me! The vet was really helpful and I feel confident giving him his insulin.

All is good to pick up Sweep tomorrow!! I can not wait!! The vet will be showing me how to give him his insulin and I will purchase some of his new food while I am there. She said he loves the canned food, but not a huge fan of the dry food - but I want him eating at least 1/4 of the dry food so his teeth will get a little cleaning since he can no longer have bones.

My dogs go nuts for a fresh Sardine.

Thank you everybody! Spoke to the vet tonight and his ultra sound showed up hardly any damage at all to his pancreas which is very good news. His liver is still slightly swollen but that should go down in time. He had a mark of some sort on the side of his tummy wall, but they were not concerned - said it might just be a funny bit of his body and that is just the way he is! He has perked up even more since this morning and if he continues to get better tomorrow she will try him on a tiny bit of food to see if he can hold it down. He hasn't vomited in days, so chances are he will keep it down. The vet there has been SO lovely and so comforting. She has explained everything to me in such detail and made me feel so much better. I just can't wait to get him back!! He looks terrible He was 5.9kilos 1 month ago and yesterday he weighed 3.6kilos. He is just skin and bone. :D Obviously I won't be fattening him up, but I will slowly cover his bones and get him (and me!) on a regular short walk each day for exercise. eta for sp

Why do our heart dogs have to be the sick ones Poocow? CavsRcute: Vets first name is Narelle, didn't catch the last name She was very lovely and answered all our question and I feel very confident Sweep is in good hands. I put Sweep on the consult table and he walked across the table to the vet and was wagging his tail! He def liked her.

Just got back from dropping Sweep at the specialist. The vet there said he is looking very good considering and she hopes he is only there for a few days. He was walking on his own and wagging his tail - the vet said dogs with what he has normally come in screaming in pain or on a stretcher. He will be on insulin and a very strict diet - but all that isn't too big a deal for me. I mostly work from home and the dogs are crated when fed to ensure they eat only their own food. Hoping he will make it to the age of 10 (he is 6.5yrs now). He will get cataracts and loose his eye site, but depending on how soon that happens and how much it affects him will determine if I do the surgery for that or if it's time for him to rest. I had always hoped he would live to 16+ and be a cranky old fart of a dog.

reminds me of Ruby I bet he had no idea how good life can be until now! -
Agreed. I don't mind the diet part - they already eat separately and home cooked meals. It will just mean being more strict about bones for the other dogs - but thats no biggy.

aah.. well, at least you now know the enemy, shmoo ! best of luck with the boy tomorrow... ;) yup! and at least, if not too bad, they are manageable.

Just got a call from the emergency vet, he has pancreatitis and diabeties. I will be picking him up tomorrow morning and taking him to the specialist at strathfield and he will get an ultrasound there to check the damage to his pancreas. He is not vomiting and no diarrhea and he isn't too uncomfortable which hopefully means his pancreas is not too bad. All up I'm looking at around $5k for vet bills - not including the last time he was at the vets. This will take me about a year to pay off since I am on a disability pension, but I don't care if I live on rice and bread if it means I get him back.
-
Thanks everybody for your well wishes. Sweep is looking better and reacting well to all the medication. If everything goes to plan I will be picking him up at 8am tomorrow morning and taking him to my vet. The two vets have been communicating so the swap over should be easy.
-
Just spoke to the vet, and he had bloody diarrhea last night, is very low on electrolytes, liver is not functioning properly and overall very ill. She has started him on insulin, antibiotics and anti nausea medication. She wants to keep him there for another day to keep running tests and keep a good eye on him - since this is what they do more so than a regular vet. I'm looking at another $300-$500 to keep him there today, but I will figure that out later, right now I just want him to get better.
-
Just got back from taking him to the emergency hospital. He is now on a drip and they are running blood tests. The vet seems sure that he is diabetic, or worse that he has a pancreas tumor. I am hoping that he is diabetic if anything... Why do they always pick the worse times to be ill!? For just tonight at the emergency vet its going to be at least $600-$800

Thanks ish, I am really starting to think that the red meat is the problem. He will be at the vets first thing tomorrow morning. He is keeping water down and licking the Nutri Gel off his gums - no where near as bad as he was last time he got sick, but either way I will have him on a drip for a few days, till the meat clears his system and I can put him on a bland chicken/rice diet forever.
-
So what diet did Luigi end up on? It really does seem that the red meat has caused this flare up.
-
I doubt it would, but I am not 100% sure. He has not had a flea bath in around 2 months - been keeping the fleas away with Capstar and Advantage. I gave him a normal bath today and he had 2 fleas on him.
-
I asked my vet last time he was there if he had eaten a baited rat would it affect him like this and she said no.
-
I have Lectade and Nutri Gel which he is accepting.
