Dogs Who Visit Hospitals And Nursing Homes
tlc replied to Loving my Oldies's topic in General Dog Discussion
My girls have been visiting as Delta therapy dogs for two and a half years now, they both love it as do the patients and the staff. We visit our local hospital, so they have to have pathology testing every 3 months which our vets do pro bono which is fantastic! We visit with another DOLer (Mawson) it's great visiting in pairs we can go into rooms together or split up if need be. Its amazing as my girls and Mawson are completely different dogs as you will see from photos. A lot of people are attracted to the big dog and amazed to see him in a hospital, then there is the ones who are more attracted to the small fluffies like my girls. It is amazing what dogs can do as therapy in these facilities, we have seen some pretty amazing things and changes in people that have been unresponsive and it always makes some peoples days to have a visit from the dogs. There is the odd person who doesn't want a visit or doesn't like dogs but they are few and few between. More recently my boys have been visiting a nursing home as my MIL is in respite, they love it too, my youngest wouldn't make a therapy dog as he is a bit wary of people he doesnt know unill he gets to know them which obviously isn't ideal. But Cooper loves everyone but is a little bit to over zealous and likes to love everyone too much, and explore every inch of every room. I picked some photos but I have so many, its hard to choose. When we first started the girls were on the front page of our local paper. Lacy and Mawson on Australia Day Our first official visit and the paper came to take our photos. Tully and a happy patient. Everyone loves the dogs tricks. This is probly one of my favourite photos of a visit, Tully with a very happy patient! My girls at a volunteer day with bob the builder. Lacy loving this patient! -
Of course my eyes skipped over the new part of the title! Good luck!

I only just seen this otherwise I would have checked it out. Did you enter anything? how did you go?
-
I would totally be doing every other thing possible to try to help the poor man. Filming it would be the last thing I would think of. Hopefully the height of the man may have helped save his life, had he have been pulled on to the ground he wouldn't have had a hope!
-
It's terrible that it was filmed. But I will be honest I am not sure I'd go in and try to help, I would be terrified of the dogs attacking me. Maybe if I had a steel pipe or something to beat them off might be a different matter. You don't know till you are in that situation. At obedience I made a pact with myself that if there is a dog fight I will not go in to break it up while the owner stands idly by and watches. I will however separate dogs if mine happen to be involved which has happened a couple of times, once resulting in me being bitten badly. I feel awful for the poor man. It looked dark (although that may have been the video) who walks 4 big powerful dogs like that not leashed? Apart from it being illegal its just stupidity!

We have had some lovely days here lately, (A few cold ones too lol) Two of my guys have Ruthless collars and leads and I am the same, out and with my dog clothes on and the dogs looking very smart! I love Harvey, my very first dog was a PB blue roan cocker, Harvey reminds me of her so much!
-
Nice one Jake! His collar looks lovely is it a Ruthless Collar? ( maybe this was discussed previously, arghhh my memory!!) A couple more from me A human appearance in this one from my OH, We went or a walk and the dogs were all being clowns especially Cooper!

That was gorgeous! The most specialist doggy swimmer I have ever seen. One of my girls is similar in that she swims with her top half out of the water.
-
That was my first thought too. I just had a look at the Facebook page, it's a world gone crazy! I feel for them losing their dog but there is so many times these days where people won't take some/any responsibility for their own actions. It was their job to keep their puppy safe.
-
Ah that explains it! Thanks.

I couldn't find it either, I've been looking. Anyway no matter.

What section is it n Pers? I wasn't sure what to search for?

My mum told me about this story she had seen on the TV, she said it was so heart breaking she couldn't watch the whole thing. I googled to find out what happened. The families Husky was Shot while they let it out of the car for a pit stop. It hard to imagine that a car could just drive along, stop people get out and shoot what they "thought" was a wild dog then just drive off. What kind of person does that?! I feel so awful for the family and especially the little boy. Story here I hope this hasn't already been bought to light, if it has I never seen it. I quite often go on long road trips with all four of mine and have to stop for pit stops along the way. I am always vigilant especially with having 4 to watch but never let them off lead unless it is an off leash area. The whole thing makes me shudder! The shooters got off scott free.

 Yea I should have known! Anyway whoever is going have a great day and pop back here and tell us what it was like!

I didn't realise this topic would cause such a stir, I understand why. I just looked at it as dog lovers from all walks of life sharing their love of dogs.

Psylliam husk added to food helps bulk up the stool to express them. From the diet I'd say too much bone with carcass at night and necks in the morning. Pumpkin is good to bulk up stools as well, the bulkier the stool the better to express. To be leaking they must be reasonably full and not expressing as they should be. One of my girls had a problem and on vets advice as above problem solved. (Although the vet advised Metamucil, but I went to health food shop and got the psyllium husks on their own, it did the trick.)

Sorry if there is already a thread, I thought this would have been mentioned before now. Is anyone planning on going to the Dog Lovers Show it looks like it will be a great few days. I wish I lived closer and wasn't working all weekend I would love to go.

Oh bugger, glad she is on the mend. bit like Lacy the other week, I thought the same with her but the night I had decided to take her to the vets the next day, she slept all night and was fine in the morning. Geez talk about a worry! Well fingers crossed for the next show!
