  1. I've recently changed over to Artemis. My boys don't like it that much, even the little gutsy one turns his nose up. I'm softening it up with hot water or broth to create a thick poridge and am adding small bits of cooked chicken (or mince) as he loves this type of food better and it seems to be working well. About 2/3's of the kibble and the rest tasty stuff. Artemis feeding guide is around 4 - 5 serves @250gm each serve per day for a 14kg puppy. I'm probably not reaching that level yet but am still happy he's getting some nutritional value into his hollow legs. As things continue, I'll try adding sardines and possibly some small amount of wet food such as Natures Gift to vary the flavour if necessary. Have tried Eagle Pack Holistic, it's good but caused a little itching with my boys so am avoiding corn, wheat, barley and glutens. Like SecretKei said, get the smallest sized packs and try them out.

I like the ingredience but they much preferred Nutro even if it made them a little itchy. I've also got some 100gm tins of Natures Gift which I'll rub into the kibble for a flavour change. As long as pup is eating a cup of Artemis a day, I'm happy. :p Eagle Pack is good but has some ingredients I need to avoid with my boys. And as SecretKei said, just get the smallest size and give it a go. :p

  4. I would recommend Colonel Light Vet Clinic, 59 Springbank Rd, Colonel Lights, 8276 7711. (about a 15 min drive from Glenelg) They are very caring and don't charge high rates. I took my dog in to have stitches removed and there was no charge for the consultation which took over 20 mins. Think they close around 6.30pm. If you want to stay in Glenelg, there's the Glenelg Vet Clinic, 597 Anzac Hwy, Glenelg 8295 7312. I've used them myself and well, it's ok but I prefer the former. They are expensive but the main reason I now go to Colonel Lights is that they have far more experienced vets. Have also used Magill Road specialists, not as an emergency but to pick up my boy from day surgery late in the evening. They are well organized and had at least 5 staff on close to midnight which impressed me. They were very busy that night and seemed to manage well. About a half hour drive from Glenelg. Enjoy your stay in Glenelg, lots of places to hang out with your pup here
  5. Please look into the ProCollar. Yes, they're pricey but it has been a god send for my boy who has a problem at the moment. He loves this collar. It gives him some sort of comfort, it's weird but true. He comes over and sticks his neck out for me to pop it on. At bed time I let it down a little and he uses it like a pillow. The puppy has punctured holes in it but a bit of tape has worked.

    Not Chewing Food

Thanks for your commments everyone Labsrule, what a situation! Your story is terrifying. I tried a lamb shank and it took him a while to chomp off the meat, so I'll look at things that size or larger otherwise, chopped up stuff. mrs t, my pup is a Wheaten Terrier
  7. Yeah, and probably much more pleasant near his willie than vodka! Lol, yeah I read until someone suggested eucalyptus oil...OUCH!! After that post I decided to just skip to the bottom lol Olive Oil, now that would work and also good for him!
  8. Maybe some vodka down his throat would have made it easier!

    Not Chewing Food

Perse, got the message with size, will try larger meaty bones like a lamb shank. Things the size of chicken necks are just swallowed, he also gets cooked chicken/lamb with/without rice, vegies etc, plus kibble. Showdog, I like the idea of raising his food! He has eaten this way since he joined us 4 weeks ago. Quite insatiable. He'll eat the tennis ball if it's in his plate :D Our other dog has no interest in food, there's no competition and will willingly give him the food from his mouth. Sandra, my other dog (same breed) is a champion chewer, everything crunched up nicely before he swallows! He's just over 9kg, 13 weeks old with a reasonable sized mouth. I'll give him a chicken leg and see how he manages this. My logic in chopping up his food small was so it digested quicker but I get what you guys are saying. I'll give large sizes a go. Dogs can get food poisoning by the way, my older dog got a dose a year ago.
  10. Young is good. Just carry them in. Both mine went through between 10 - 13 weeks of age. The first one went to a proper dog obedience club. Was excellent, learnt heaps. Just completed one at our local vets. Very disappointing. The $60 for 3 lessons consisted of half hour play, 20 mins of selling their products, 7 mins of wrong advice with food and the way to treat a dog (generalization here, just MO) and oh yes, 3 mins to teach to sit. At the last lesson we spent the 20 mins inspecting the vet surgery. Walked around and viewed sterilizers and 'quiet room' carrying a very grumpy pup. Oh well, live and learn.
  11. Is there anyway to teach a puppy to chew his dinner properly? Our little one gets lots of various foods, which he loves but is just swallowing it and he needs to chew it up a bit. He's thrown up a couple of times (due to over eating) and all the pieces are chuncky, like I gave him! I'm chopping things up very small now so they digest. He's not having teeth issues at this stage, they are a killing weapons
  12. I'm giving a flat teaspoon mixed in ice cream at night. Trying to speed up tissue repair. I've used it myself in the past for various reasons and I've been told MSM is used in horses for oedemas, muscle issues and much more.
  13. He got it off all by himself! Somehow during the night he managed to take his Elizabethan blowup ProCollar off (it wasn't too tight) and took the bandage off. He was so quiet about the whole thing, he didn't wake me up and I'm usually tuned into his night noises! Well done Murphy, willy and sutures intact, bad dressing off
  14. Thanks for the fast replies guys I only have eucalyptus oil but am worried it may touch the wound area and cause him further pain. Some of it has come undone, so I'll try to cut off the hanging bit and get to the vets first thing. As you can imagine, he's a little sensitive when I try to get near this area and not co-operative at all.
  15. My dog had some minor surgery yesterday and they put one of those bandages on where the ends are that sticky tape stuff. I now need to remove it but how? It's quite a big bandage and totally covers his penis. He had a few stitches on the side of his willy so as you can imagine, this is not an easy thing to remove as I can't just go RIP!!!! Help would be appreciated.
  16. Yep, two Wheatens. They are full brothers, Wally comes from a litter of 6, him being the only boy. He's very smart and quite fearless. He's also extremely lucky that big brother is letting him get away with murder! Suddenly the house is dirtier, the poop has trippled, my bed is smaller, the food bill has exploded and I have been driven to  By the way, I needed to use the ProCollar on Murphy the other day and it went extremely well. He didn't freak out, had full vision and was able to sleep on his back all night. I let some air out before he slept to make it more comfy. Highly recommend them. Very expensive to buy but they are miles ahead from that other bucket. PS: Lots of cuddles from my two boys makes me forgive them. I just love picking him up whilst he's still small ;)
  17. Haven't been able to find anything in the search section. I'm interested if any of you guys have used MSM on your dogs for various reasons. And if so, what are your thoughts? I'm currantly using it as my dog has tissue damage in his prepuce area. It's a long shot but there doesn't seem to be any alternatives at this point.
  18. My dog has a big mouth. I can take anything out of it but trying to get a pill down his gob is like fighting with a bull
  19. Picked up the ProCollar today. Without a doubt it is infinately better than the hard plastic bucket thing. Just my luck if I leave it lying about one of the dogs will sink their teeth into it! Mr Grumpy sounds like a live wire! At 14, he should be sitting in the lounge doing the cross word, not running around like a maniac! Well, I did it. Went and got another Wheaten. Total rocks in my head. They are running a muck. Play time is between midnight and 2am.
  20. Glad to hear he's better. It must have been pretty anoying for him. These collars are called Elizabethan ProCollar Inflatable or just ProCollars. Found some on www.petsplus.com.au and they come in various sizes. My dog has a 17 inch neck and needs the large. Not cheap, $69.00 for that size. One of my local pet suppliers has them at the same price, I'll be going in tomorrow to pick one up. I must be getting old and grumpy (Mrs Grumpy ) but doesn't everything seem to cost a bomb these days?
  21. I've seem them somewhere....will get back to you guys later :D
  22. Hi Sheridan, poor Mr Grumpy, hope he's out of his shackles today. Have you seen those other type of elizabethan buckets available? They look like donuts and I think they are a blow up. By the looks of them, far more comfortable than these hard plastic things plus the dog can use it like a pillow, well sort of... when sleeping. Not describing it too well but I'm looking at getting one for future use. Just a thought, these standard buckets are pretty bad.
  23. We've been dog sitting for 10 days and this little guy is always sneezing in my dogs face. He's about 1/3rd of the size of mine but they play with him standing on his back legs ang grabbing mine by his beard. My dog is very gentle with him but this little one sneezes continiously into his face, nose, eyes, mouth. Now my dog has started sneezing and I heard a hacking sound from him this evening. We looked after this dog last year and soon after he left, mine got a cold and we were given Linctol Cough Syrup. I've still got half a bottle left and wondering if I should start dosing them both tonight? The JRT goes home tomorrow but my big worry now is that our new little SCWT puppy arrives Sat. I would hate for him to catch anything. What should I do? Use the old cough syrup? (dated 21/8/2009) Sterilize the house? Wash all the toys the terrier has slobbered on?
