Thanks for that. I called the vet today and they gave me the all clear to take the medications. His itching seemed to have settled down and we haven’t noticed any runny poo except the one off on the day he had the big bone. He has been doing quite well since recovering from the scoping. I hardly see him sneeze anymore and as a result no mucous discharge or bleeding nose. He does get the occasional reverse sneeze but that’s still not a frequent occurrence. I can only hope he stays this way, I’ll be happy. Thank you everyone for the kind thoughts and suggestions.

Thanks, will check in with vet on Tuesday. I bathed him in maleseb today after seeing rave reviews with people having great success with itchy skin where nothing else has worked but maleseb. He seems to be itchier than before the bath so I’m going to say that hasn’t worked for him. They have a big pork bone every weekend since they were little. I’ve trimmed off all the fat so it’s just meat and bone. I stopped it for a few weeks when he was having the nose bleed and only restarted it this week seeing he is a bit better. Normally I don’t see runny poo after the bone but because I stopped it for a few weeks it may have caused a bit of an upset? Or it could be the meloxicam - I hope it isnt. Will keep a close eye on the poo the next few days.

Yeah I got the meds in such a rush before the long weekend I didn’t really think at that point. I wanted him to have medication for the weekend so quickly picked them up before closing time. They are closed until Tuesday so have to wait till then I guess

How long before I know if my boy has bad reaction to the medication. He has been on it for three nights already and he seems okay. But today I notice the poo in the yard is a bit runnier than usual. I’m not sure whether it’s because he had a big pork bone yesterday or whether the poo is his (I have another dog). it’s certainly no diarrhea yet but runny poo is not a good sign. Given meloxicam is a non steroid medication, does it have contradictions with other meds? I’m currently applying a steroid cream on my boys itchy spots on his body. That’s topical and not taken orally, is that okay? And how about antihistamine and gaberpetin ? Thanks

Has anyone used the chinese herbal medicine yunnan baiyao to treat bleeding (nose bleed, internal bleeding etc) on their dogs? This was suggested by the hospital to treat my boy's bleeding nose. I read reviews on it and it seems to be effective and do wonders. I did a search on this forum and only a handful of posts came up where this was briefly mentioned. I'm hoping someone can share their experience with this drug.

Thanks everyone. The vet also said this may also lessen the sneezing and minimise the nose bleed. But I can't find any literature online that suggests it has this effect. Does anyone know whether this is true? My boy doesn't seem to be in any pain (in fact i stopped the paracetamol that was given to him after the scoping). Meloxicam seems to be a pain killer which he at the moment doesn't need, but it was prescribe to slow down the tumour. It is interesting that this medication that is typically used to treat arthritis in dogs is used for tumours.

My boy has been doing better after recovering from the scoping. Sneezing is uncontrollable when it happens but he doesn't have many episodes of it. And the nose bleed hasn't come back - its on the mucous but nose does not have fresh blood. The vet now has him on Meloxicam. Has anyone used this drug before? I started him on his first dose tonight. I'm a bit nervous of the side effects and given its the long weekend, hard to get to a vet that is open if he has a reaction to it. Its got a giant sticker on it that says stop immediately if vommiting or diarrhea. He has used metacam before for a short period of time and he was okay on it. Is it the same thing?

Thank you all. I haven’t had the discussions with the oncologist yet but after googling and seeing what radiation involves, it’s not something I think i will be considering. The thought of having to put him under 10 to 20 times during a short period of time to do the treatment sounds more like suffering in my head than making him better. Not discounting the fact that radiation has its own side effects and complications. And even if treatment works, it only buys at most - a year? Given his unexpected head tumour find adds a double whammy to this so his chances really are not good. If I’m going to be trying to extend his life, I want to be doing it for his benefit, not for me. At this point my priority is to make him as comfortable as possible. He isn’t showing signs of distress yet, just an annoying bleeding nose. Is there such thing as palliative care specialist at hospitals or is the vet it?

Thank you. Yes that was 10 years ago! Can you believe it? I learnt to groom him and take care of him and know the breed. A lot of good times. Too bad its coming to an end soon. I'm feeling the pain already. Hardest bit is I will probably be the one that has to make the call eventually.

Had my boy scoped and CT scanned and they found a tumour. I'm so sad. Still waiting for biopsy results to come back to see what kind we are dealing with but by the sound of things, it doesn't seem to be operable due to location, so regardless whether its benign or not, its still a death sentence. Hasn't spread to the brain yet but they also found a small tumour in the brain in the scan coincidentally. There isn't really much we can do, radiation seems painful with the side effects. I want to make him as comfortable as possible. The prognosis doesn't sound too good. Are there any medication that can control the nose bleed? He had quite a frightening nose bleed the other night, the fact that it is now confirmed to be a tumour means we will probably be expecting more of this. I am heart broken. Not sure I can ever get another dog again knowing that one day I will have to let him/her go.

Thank you all, I'm sorry you had to go through that . If anything I hope its just a foreign body that is stuck and can't come out but itself. He hasn't reversed sneezed for an entire week. Just normal sneezing and even then its not frequent. And when it happens its mainly in the morning for some reason. I probably will need to send him in for scoping, let me give it another week and see how he does. Right now he seems fine with the occasional normal sneeze.

So a nasal tumour easily treatable and has a good chance of survival? Did they just remove it while he was under for the scope? I'm so sorry to hear that. Was it single sided (on one nostril) on you chi? What were the symptoms you noticed besides the sneezing? Were there any neurological changes? I don't think its nasal mites, the reason being is it is only on the one nostril. If it was mites, I would expect it to be on both.

No, this is the my other boy. He has gone through a 7 day course of antibiotics and towards the end of the course, the reverse sneezing and normal sneezing both subsided. I haven't seen him reversed sneezed for about 4-5 days now, he has the occasional normal sneeze but nothing I was alarmed about. But the sneezing has just started to become more frequent today. Not a good sign The reverse sneezing is a bit of a mystery. Before the nose bleed, it was like once a day a few times a week. The day after the injection of cortizone and the antibiotics, it changed and became more frequent and longer in duration... All these episodes were in the morning. And then it disappeared completely towards the end of the course of antibiotics.

He is on antibiotics already so it would have treated fungal infection if it is that. The bleeding has stopped so it is probably allergies. Just the reverse sneezing is a bit of a concern at the moment because the attacks are frequent when they happen. But most of the day he is fine.

My 10 year old schnuazer started reverse sneezing earlier this year. It lasts about 5 secs and has an episode about once a day a few times a week. Saw the vet and he says nothing to really be concerned about. Recently he began sneezing (normal sneezing) a lot in the mornings, consecutive sneezes, no discharge. I just thought it was allergies because he has also been scratching. But last week, I noticed a slight nose bleed in one of the nostrils, its not a heavy bleed and it doesn't drip onto the floor. The blood is faint (like there is a bit of mucus with it ) and not dark red on the tissue. So off to the vet we went. Vet gave him a strong dose of cortizone and gave him some doxycycline (anti biotics). In about 2 hours, the bleed dissapeared and his nose looks back to normal. But I noticed his reverse sneezing got worst although normal sneezing went away. He started having several reverse sneezes consecutively and its for a longer duration maybe 10-20 seconds. And it comes and goes. Its more frequent in the mornings, then nothing in the afternoon and night. I also put him on antihistamine on advice of vet at noon so I'm not sure whether the medication is working and doing its thing from noon onwards and then begins to wear out by the morning. Vet says its rather odd that the reverse sneezing is happening after the nose bleed stopped. His reverse sneezing has improved today, in that its shorter and not as long but it's still happening consecutively. Has anyone have any experience with nose bleed and seeing reverse sneezing like this happen? It may be inevitable that he needs to be scoped through the nose, I'm trying to make that the last option. He is eating and energy levels are well.

Recently my dog has these scab like things start appearing on random places on his body. They are essentially like scabs except he did not injure the area or have a wound. It just appears. There are a few areas on the body, the surface area isn't big (less than a 5c coin) but the scabs are quite bulky. It flakes off eventually. I think it also itches the area. I clean it with baking soda which seems to get it off quicker if i didn't do that. Does anyone know what it is and what is causing it? Is it to do with his skin being too dry or too oily. I can't tell whether his skin is dry or oily. I always though he is on the dry side because he dandruffs after a bath. But when i went to the vet recently, he made a comment that his fur is oily .... but thats because I put lotion on him thinking he is dry.

Still locating the source of the problem. I think its related to the teeth. When I brush a certain area, the smell is present on the toothbrush, other areas it's no smell. But I cannot explain how it can still have smell when the xrays are clear.

Yeah, unless they missed something. The smell is the same as when he had the rotten teeth - only not as bad. I still think it's coming from the teeth and not the gut because after brushing with the toothbrush, the smell is all over the brush. I'm just wondering whether it does take some time for the original smell to dissipate, but its been a month already. I would hate it if they missed something, that would mean needing to put the dog under again. That would really suck. Its the full xrays. Me too, I had that happen to me once where they didn't get everything. This time round I insisted on xrays.

Definitely get a second opinion and I agree SASH is a good start. Ask your vet for a referral to a specialist at SASH, the doctors there are fantastic! It may not be that bad. I recently had a same thing happened to me (not lymphoma but an incident), my vet eluded to a doom and gloom situation and I was also warned to think about putting my boy down. I asked for a referral to see a specialist at SASH and going into the appointment I had little hope for a turnaround. But it turned out to be something that was fixable and didn't even require surgery! He is back to normal now. I'm glad I did because your vet really has a lot of persuasion power over what your next steps should be especially when you are frazzled and stressed. If I had followed their diagnosis, my boy wouldn't be sitting next to me now. A second opinion doesn't hurt. It may cost a few hundred dollars but worth it if it could mean saving your pet's life without suffering.

My dogs have doggy smell a few days after taking a bath. Recently at the vet, I came across some dog cologne. But because the dog nose is sensitive, I was wondering whether I should I really be putting any fragrance on them? Perhaps the scent may be super strong for their sensitive noses. I didn't really think it did anything but it did me sniff him constantly because he smells really good :D. Its like a rosemary, orangey smell. Does anyone know whether there are any dog cologne that resembles the same scent?

Haven't had issues with his gut or any inkling anything is wrong there. As he got an xray done, if there were any rotten teeth under the gums, that would have picked it up - I assume it would wouldn't it? How to rule out the gut? Would pro biotic yogurt help? Yes but he just recently got his teeth looked at and cleaned. Wouldn't that have resolved this issue? He did have a few rotten ones out.

My dog was recently had some rotten teeth removed. Got the xrays done and targeted the problematic teeth. Also had the scale and polish done. His breath smells better but it's still a bit off. I was expecting it to clear completely, should it? Its been a month since the procedure. The smell is like a mild version of the rotten teeth smell he had previously, before it was pretty bad, now you get a whiff of the same scent (weaker) now and then but not always. I brushed his teeth today and smelt the toothbrush and the scent is prevalent there. The last time my other dog had the same issue, his breath cleared up after the procedure.
