  1. Urgh.... after further digging, have found some articles about recalls on TOTW last year. This may change my decision. May look into Artemis range again instead. http://www.petsadviser.com/pet-food-recalls/ Does anyone know where TOTW is made?
  2. Ah you also have itching with blackhawk? Mine too. He didn't use to but recently, he has been very itchy. So thinking of switching to fish kibbles instead. No they don't get pigs ears. Just the occasional bone. Maybe you are right. The little one has been messy with drinking water and eats quickly (even with a slow feeder bowl), but he has been like that all his life so why only now is it staining? If i clean it on a daily basis, would the staining eventually go away? When he gets a bath, i scrub it with my hands using aloveen. Why doesn't the staining come off with shampoo and water? And what can i do to ensure it doesn't build up to bateria and yeast?
  3. Nah, he can only take the CANIDAE GRAIN FREE pureSEA version since I suspect he is allergic to chicken and turkey and the main ingredients in the pureSea are "meal" based so not as good as TOTW as it has the real thing. PureSea is already $100 so for $10-$15 extra, TOTW isn't too bad. Thanks for the recommendation anyways, too bad they cant have the cheaper flavour because of the allergy.
  4. Thanks Rosetta. Jess, yeah i recall something like that. I did relook at Canidae just now and prices are comparable with TOTW.
  5. Yep still on BH but planning to switch soon. My big boy has been scratching like mad recently. Even so, i don't think its the kibbles thats causing the staining, both dogs eat the same thing, only one has staining. Schnauzer, will give that a try next time. I read somewhere that breeders use baking soda to clean the beards for show, am i dreaming this up or do they really?
  6. My dogs did really well on BH when i first switched them from Artemis. The reason I switched was I suspected allergies from chicken for one of my dog. He went onto BH and scratching seems to be a lot less. He has been on BH since the times with the plain white plastic bags. But recently his scratching all over again, worst then when he was on Artemis. I didn't think of this to be food related until I read in a another thread that there has been other dogs in the same situation with BH. Just wondering whether the ingredients have changed? And for those in the same situation, what dog food did you end up switching to?
  7. Nope. ears are fine too. I think Malaseb is too strong. I tried it on the body of one of my dogs with allergies and I can feel my hand burning. Don't want to put that anywhere near the mouth especially since he is a licker. I'm currently using aloveen, but that doesn't clean the staining up at all.
  8. Weird. He has been having the same diet since he was a puppy and only seemed to have started to colour recently. And doesn't happen with my other schnauzer who eats the same thing
  9. These guys are sellers, they don't send out samples do they? I was considering Canidae a while back and at that time read pretty bad reviews with the dogs. Formula may have changed now so will review again.
  10. I'm thinking of switching to this dog food seeing so much positive reviews on this forum. Does anyone know where I can pick up a sample in Sydney? I'm currently feeding black hawk lamb and hoping to switch. One of my dogs have allergies so want to make sure he is okay with the food before buying a large pack.
  11. How do i stop the beard of my schnauzer from turning brown. My mini never had this problem but noticed a change in colour recently. I chop that part off but it goes brown again. He doesn't drool or salivate but he licks things a lot and is a messy eater and drinker. I was told to use tear stain solution and I read somewhere baking powder but not sure how to apply
  12. Thanks beck. Yeah I give mine bones but as well but hasn't come off. What do I apply on the gums if I accidently nick it? and do i need to apply anything after the scaling to protect the enamel?
  13. Thanks. Its not bad, the vet saw it and didn't even think twice about leaving it and seeing whether it will fall off with some bones. I'm just not sure whether I need to apply something on the treated area before and after the scaling. Clyde where did you get your scaler from?
  14. My dog has a bit of tartar build up on his teeth. I was wondering what are ways I can get it off myself before taking it to the vet. Is it worth investing in a scaler to do this. I remember my breeder showing me the scaling process when i first visted him a few years ago, seems quite straightforward. What should I have on hand if the gum bleeds and do I need to polish it off after the scaling process?
  15. yep will be going to Bunnings soon. Will check out the table section too while i'm there. Thank you
  16. piper thank you. looks sturdy enough for a groom. I will check out bunnings next week. I was meant to pop into officeworks today to see whether they had sturdier tables but ran out of time.
  17. What a good idea! Can you post a picture please so i can visualise. I'm not too good as a handy man :). Can you please tell me what height of the table is best for grooming that won't tire out the lower back? Okay, thanks for letting me know. I saw a more sturdier table at officeworks a while ago, may pop in to check it out if making it is not an option.
  18. Thank you. My boys generally get groomed on top of the washing machine without any major hassles. But we had to buy a new one recently and its a lot higher. I think i just need a table and a non slip map in that case. I was thinking of the extra arm because with the washing machine, it was put in the corner so had two walls blocking it from doing anything courageous like jumping off. I'm not sure how still they will be without the extra wall. Wouldn't one of these do the job? The height may a bit low though, my washing machine height was about 870cm. Or was it my washing machine height was too high to start of with?? http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Furniture/Tables/OWFCTABLE
  19. I'm trying to get a grooming table. Where is the best place to do this and what should I look for? Is the restraint effective in keeping the dog still? I see it as a hazard if you have a dog that won't keep still and can potentially choke him. Thanks
  20. What does seizures have to do with it? Could it possibly cause it in the future?
  21. My boys are currently on Advantage but it doesnt seem to keep the fleas away. I'm thinking of Comfortis. Does anyone know whats the difference between oral medication and topical? Does Comfortis only treat fleas and is not a worming product?
  22. I think insurance is insurance. What bugs me wih pet insurance is the PDS is quite impractical and the lack of underwriters in this field gives them the advantage to do so. It's like saying, if you have back pain, we will only cover you one session of Physio and then you are on your own for the rest of your life. I rather pay for pet insurance and never have to use it, but the conditions and restrictions are quite impractical such that when your dog gets ill, they won't cover. I think I'm going to change over to pet plan if they are going to cover for existing conditions.
  23. I thought the exclusion would be for the life of the pet is it not? What insurance are you with? You can't expect a dog not to have multiple events of diarrhea in its lifetime so i find it pretty upsetting that they won't cover in the event he has it again
  24. I was going through a couple of pet insurance policies and its so poor value for money. The fact that your dog has had a one off illness mean from this point going forwards, he will not be covered for life. My dog had a case of diarrhea recently, and it will seem silly to exclude diarrhea forever. And all the joint assessment is ridiculous, my vet indicated on the examination form there are very very very minor issues and said that all the test is very subjective and not very accurate. The fact that she has ticked the "Yes" box means that my dog will not be covered even though there are no issues now. Why are our pet insurance so restrictive? I have family in the USA and they indicate that their pet insurance covers a lot of things.
