My passion is canine nutrition and anything to do with shih-tzu's.
One of my main pet peeves are toy dog owners who treat their dogs like babies. My guys get two off leash romps daily, love swimming in the river and acting...well...just like dogs should! :D
Kramar Chicken Breast Strips
Tzu_lover replied to kleintjie's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I've stopped feeding them to my shih-tzu's too. They seem to have an addictive quality to them,my dogs cant get enough. I have fed loads of them, maybe 1 or 2 packets a week over the past year SO i dont think the one or two strips you fed will cause a problem. Does anyone feed the "VitaPet" Jerhi" treats? These are their all time favourites! They are thin redish sticks. These and the chicken jerky are the only 2 treats my dogs will eat.The vitapet is from China aswell.... -
Time To Repost Dog Food Ingredients

Umm where did you hear that? 'Meal' is definitely superior to 'meat'. Meat is made up of mostly water, whereas meal is the dehydrated and much more concentrated form of meat. I have some links which i will try to find which explains this more clearly. -
Chicken Treats From China Beware
Tzu_lover replied to Lizzy06's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I just went to that site and noticed all the Chinese writing next to the products.Doesn't give me much reassurance... I've e-mailed asking where their treats are made. I think the best thing all of us can do is go out buy our own dehydrators! You can make all sorts of jerky and treats, such as chicken breast, liver, fish, sweet potato, the list is endless! And a much cheaper option too. -
Chicken Treats From China Beware
Tzu_lover replied to Lizzy06's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
This has been public knowledge in the US for well over a year, the brands have been made public. I know waggin train is one of them.Woolies and BigW sell chicken jerky treats which are made in China, says so right on the pack.I think ALL dehydrated chicken fillets are made over there The treats referred to here are plain dried chicken breast fillets.Much different to the treats you are describing. Unfortunately chicken jerky are one of the few treats my fusspots will eat. -
There are none If Orijen is irradated, does this mean that every imported food is?

Eagle Pack Power Vs Great Barko
Tzu_lover replied to witheverythingiam's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
What is wrong with this country?????????? Why don't we have ONE decent pet food manufactured here. The government/people shouldn't complain about pet owners "wasting resources" by buying imported pet foods when we have zero choice available here to choose from Further they should relax our quarantine restrictions,so getting in pet foods/supplements isn't so damn difficult. Ooh this subject makes me steam -
The hills prescription diets sometimes have their place, but IMO as soon as the dog is well again i wouldnt feed it anymore, the rx diets should be a short term fix. As far as the regular SD lines,if people are happy to pay top dollar for a low grade food then thats their loss.Because that's what SD is in my opinion..Terrible ingredients with an over inflated price. They also think if the vet sells and recommends it then it must be good :D I,and many others still call SD: Science death Science fiction Science crap And a couple of others that probably cant be repeated here.

HiYa, Does anyone know if it is possible to buy minced raw green tripe? I cant seem to find a distributor anywhere! I am so jealous when i read the US and UK forums which have tripe available to them in just about every pet shop. I've tried the canned ziwipeak tripe but my fusspots were not keen on it at all.We want the real stuff,LOL Any idea's? Thanks

Here are some ideas off the top of my head: Look into getting a dog walker to come in DAILY. Take them for a good off lead romp BEFORE and AFTER work Do NOT leave them outside for 22 hours a day on a bed of cold hard stones.I would guess this would drive any dog nuts and leave them very unhappy, bored and lonely Dogs are social creatures that do not do well being left to their own devices for so many hours a day. Re-home with a family that has the time and energy to devote to these dogs, with owners who don't work long hours a day like you guys do.To be honest your situation does not sound very accommodating for dogs.... My best piece of advice would be to re-home with a family that has the time to devote to these dogs. And lets not forget that owning a dog is a privilege....not a right.

Orijen Is Now Avaliable In Australia
Tzu_lover replied to laffi's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
True But one of my dogs is so fussy she eats a limited amount of fresh stuff, which is why i wanted to incorporate a bit of commercial food into their diet. The reason i swayed more toward home made food was because of the limited amount of decent dry foods available here.Thankfully we are starting to see more holistic type foods entering our market, such as Orijen,Artemis et al -

Orijen Is Now Avaliable In Australia
Tzu_lover replied to laffi's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Nekhbet Orijen is 42% protein. The reference to 70% is the meat content. Somebody also asked what is wrong with Australian foods.Well i can answer that...They are ALL crap! Before Orijen became available i was mostly feeding raw and home cooked with a smidgen of Royal Canin(vet grade),and it irked me that i had to feed a food with such sub standard ingredients. I've been feeding my fussy tzu's orijen for around a month now and they love it and are doing well. As for the protein and kidney issues,i have many, many links debunking this theory of high protein equals kidney damage. When i get a minute i'll post them. I dont want to my first post here to be tooo over the top
