  1. My present litter have no collars of any kind as their dam would NOT leave it alone so I removed the collars. BUT elastic cat collars are NOT suitable either..
  2. becks I tried the cat collars also my puppies once they became more interactive ( ok wild :)) I kept finding the puppies would pull them off each other and after one went missing never to be found stopped using them as well. These days I use bias binding and that comes in so many collars and is cotton so it knots easy and stays on.
  3. Buddy, I did buy the velcro collars and haven't used them as I was worried they would cause irritation to the neck, they are too firm and rough.
  4. I only give Calcium (Sandoz) during whelping, My bitches weigh between 29 and 33 kgs and I give initial dose 10mls after delivery of the first puppy but you do need to refer to the directions. I don't use a heat lead so I have no idea as to the wattage. I have a litter at the moment and the temperature of the room is a constant 21 degrees without any heat and my puppies are very comfortable.
  5. Also an update on Bella, she had a very good night, so did I, she didn't wake me up at all. She is very calm and relaxed now, grateful for my vet realizing that she was also twitching, possible sign of eclampsia.
  6. Congratulations Stolzseinrotts, beautiful babies and all a very good size. :happydance:
  7. Have been to the vet this afternoon, Bella had had a Prostaglandin injection for a retained placenta and Calcium as she is on the verge of eclampsia. She is also on AB's. She is far more settled this evening, I should have had the camera as she was smiling at me.
  8. Yes, I did give her Calcium Sandoz during whelping and after usually but She didn't have any yesterday (bad mommy) until she had the episode so will be having it for the next few days. Bella is not a maiden but it is over 3 years since her first and only other litter and she is such a mommies girl, She loves her babies but becomes stressed when they are spread all over the whelping box and she can't find room to lay down (5' x 4' is not big enough) poor
  9. Bella is fine this morning she had had her breakfast, drinks and out to toilet, she is acting very normal. My bed is right there beside the whelping box and I monitored her though the night her temp didn't go any higher (thank god)but eased on down to normal, she had drinks and toilet breaks x 3 during the night. My first thought was that she might still have a placenta not passed as there was 4 puppies born without them, she was given Oxytocin when she finished whelping. Phoned my vet an told to observe during the day : although he knew that he did have to say that  I believe that she had a panic attack and I have sent my OH out for Rescue Remedy as I don't need another night like that. Hope things run smoothly now , No more scares please.
  10. Help !!! Bella was holding a screaming puppy others were upset. I have felt very comfortable with leaving her for a short while so this was very upsetting I have taken her away and crated her for a short while until I feed my other dogs. How do I handle this??? I have settled her down, she has fed the puppies eaten dinner and had a good drink of water. She was breathing up and her temp was 39.2, Maybe a panic attack? Post whelping stress. felt her boobs and they are not hot, doesn't have any lumps or bumps. Phew she scared me.
  11. I also start to wean at 3 - 3 1/2 weeks just to give mum a bit of help. I start with lean mince and fresh frozen goat milk, lucky to have someone nearby that has goats, Mum is already having goat milk on her food and made up milkshakes of free range egg, honey, goat milk and yoghurt, she loves it. By the time they are 5 weeks mine are usually still with mum for part of the day and having 2 meals as well. Mine get to go outside when mum is ready to take them also depending on the weather but usually it is about 4 1/2 weeks and only for a short time. I'm at Marulan HPB just 15 mins from Goulburn.
  12. Before and after photos, I would never have guessed that she was carrying 9 puppies. Mum and 7 bubs all going well, weights at birth were smallest 521gms to the biggest 607gms
  13. BB, They were born yesterday March 2nd. All 7 are doing well, hardly ever leaving the milk bar, Bella is a wonderful mum. Usually I have always assisted with the births but I have finally learnt not to interfere and leave it to mum, she knows best. Most of the litter were born without a placenta attached which was fine for those born head first but the last 3 were born breach and I just could not get the last 2 out quickly enough for them to survive , She has had Oxytocin so I hope she has none left inside, I will be watching her closely.
  14. Hi only just connected the computer for today, Bella whelped 9 puppies 6 females and 3 boys, but sadly lost 1 girl and 1 boy due to the last 3 being breach, no 7 was able to be revived but 8 and 9 were jammed in their for too long, No 8 was well and truly stuck and buy the time he was delivered it was too late for him and the last girl. Numbers are 5 females and 2 boys, very good litter for a bitch that I have been trying to get pregnant for 3 years. (That's another story) Will try for some sleep now as she kept me up last night just for fun .
  15. Congratulations HPB, 4 healthy puppies. Sorry for the one you lost. Bella's drop at 37.2 is as low as she went now sitting at a constant 37.4 She is restless and wants to be on MY BED, not eating or even drinking much. Made her a goat milk, honey & egg milkshake which she also refused. I am thinking that she may have them withing the next 24 hours (probably will start 2am tomorrow morning).
  16. I feed my adult dogs on Bonnie Working Dog and have for most of their lives and they do well on it but they also have bones (chicken, beef or lamb)every day, they also have fish oil capsules, eggs, cheese, yoghurt, sardines, vitamin tablets and other things. I have tried other brands of food but always go back to Bonnie. My puppies though are fed on ProPlan Chicken.
  17. Bella has a temp drop this am 37.2 ------- for the past 3 days her am temp has been a very constant 37.8 every day and 38.1 at night. I would really be hoping for her to hold on to them for another day or two but we will have wait and see. Think that I should be getting the whelping box in her room today. Was hoping to visit my son today for his 40th (10th ) birthday but maybe not. Bree is sounding like she is ready to go for a trouble free whelping HBP.
  18. WOW only 5 of us  Does that mean we have to post twice as many pictures ? My girl is way over this pregnancy thing, just sitting down she looks like she is sitting on eggs poor girl. My only hope is that she make it through to the weekend. As for us, this litter has taken 3 years of trying for her to conceive so it is vital that I watch her even more so. I have started to take her temp twice a day already, she is staying in the whelping room but as yet I have not brought in the whelping box, ( don't want to give her ideas ). My supplies are all in also (bought my snacks today) I have to have lots of stress food and coffee :coffee: Last time Bella had puppies she present 2 of them ( little hind feet protruding ) and just as I took hold she sucked them right back up again, don't think I have ever been so worried about puppies surviving but they did. Now just hoping for a couple of nights worth of good sleep before the action starts, Zzzzzzzzzzzzz
  19. For me, I would expect them to feed exactly the food that I provide and nothing else, (I always provide my own food) Expect for them to have atleast 2 times a day free running on grass to toilet. Luxury is not expected but well shaded and insulated kennel area is good. Never allow my dogs to have play time with others as I also have a dog aggressive female. Always have my dogs placed next to each other if runs are not big enough for 2. I also expect them to come home as clean as they were when they arrived. I once left my very cranky Mini Foxie at a kennel just for the day (no night)when I arrived to pick him up the kennel owner had given him a bath, just because she was bathing a couple of others. It was amazing as that little Bugger would NEVER allow anyone to pick him up let alone bath him  And yes the guy still had all of his fingers.
  20. For the first time ever my dogs all have fly bites on their ears (makes me feel like a BAD owner). I have just dug deep into my dog box and found some Illium fly bite ointment that has been in there for years and put it on everyone. Just wondering what everyone else uses? Anyone have a natural remedy?
  21. I gave it a go but found that almost every bag I purchased had a great deal of broken biscuits as dust in the bag ( far too much for my liking). Don't know whether it was a problem from the company or the wholesale company. Went back to my old food BONNIE.
  22. Winston is just beautiful, with that colour he would surely be able to sneak up on those pesky rabbits and hares. I really miss those corn fields. During the harvest one time the farmer called out to us that a black & white cat had been run over by the combine harvester .... mad frantic search through the house for our cat who we found sound asleep on a bed. :)
  23. Boil / simmer 10 mins and when cool slice thinly and place in a slow oven for 1 hour or so leave in oven with the door closed until cool.
  24. Thank you for posting I grew up in the Northeast of England, living on the edge of town with corn fields at our back fence. It was a wonderful place to grow up, the collie rough who lived next door was an excellent hunter, I can still see him as he would be on the hunt through the corn field every now and again he would leap in the air to see where the hare had gone :) Our first dog was a lurcher type of dog a Border Collie X. Great memories you have stirred up here
