Hello I had to come to work today, I was a bit worried about leaving him at home, although he was his normal self thism orning, so demanded OH go home and check him between his clients, he seems to be fine. I was thinking about a vet trip, but think I could be over reacting. I think he has just had an upset stomach. Thanks for your advice

Thanks for asking this question Bitty... I have been pondering on this myself, and Cruise is yet to be done. I might take him for a visit to the vet this afternoon
-
Thanks for that Cazablanca. His colour returns straight away. Im thinking its possibly something hes eaten, there was some of the vegies in some of his sickness, Im thinking maybe the mince I got for him was too rich for his little stomach. He has been inside with me for the past hour now sleeping. Will keep an eye on him overnight, and call my vet if anything happens.
-
So, in the past 15-20 minutes he has stopped, i have made sure he has had a drink of water, and he is sleeping. Should I leave him? Take him to the vet in the morning? The throw up was like he had had the runs out of his mouth.

So Cruise is a 4.5mth Westie, half an hour ago he went all funny, and threw up this gross brown, with veggies that he was fed this morning with his mince and rice stuff. ever since then about ever 5-10 minutes he is going outside to throw up thick bile. I have slightly changed his diet as of last night, He was on Eukanuba biscuits with Tuckertime occasionally, but I last night I cooked some mince, rice and vegies, he had a small amount last night and again this morning with his biscuits. He has also had some bait this weekend while at the show (just small amounts of polony and liver) Should I be concerned, or have I just upset his stomach, and perhaps the mince was too rich for him. Thanks in advance Sarah

Moving Into A House That Had Other Dogs... Advice Please?
RoxyNHemi replied to gmc's topic in Puppy Chat
When our house was rented, they were supposed to pay a pet bond. At the end of it, they had to spray the yard with pesticide, which would of been covered by the pet bond if they paid it, instead it came out of their overall bond. Ask the real estate agent if they offer anything similair. I wouldnt be too stressed about it if mother and puppy looked healthy, and as long as you keep your pups worming / flea / vaccination treatments up to date you should be OK. -
Boxer With An Aural Hematoma
RoxyNHemi replied to elleathree's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
How large were the hematoma's - Bradman's is about the size of a 20cent peice but about 3/4 inch thick. I is also situated at the base of the ear flap (at his head) so the vet thinks is was some kind of trauma that caused it. It doesnt seem to be worrying him at all. Surgery is first thing Monday morning - they will also be looking for what caused it, a suggestion was a grass seed or some other ear irritant. Hers started off small, and grew quite large within a few days, about the size of a 50 cent piece. She was an old dog of 11 at the time, and surgery wasnt an option in my opinion, MIL was in england, and she had had success with it in the past, it took me 3 vets to get one that would do it however. -

My future MIL has had her goldens have them, they have drawn it out with a syringe, and injected with quartezone(sp?) and the dog has been fine... no need for surgery. -

Hi I've just got a new puppy, I'll try to help as much as possible, as my last pup before this one was 5 yeasrs ago Which sex is "better"? I prefer males, they seem to be more sooks. I think the toilet training depends on the owner... How to tell if a breeder is reputable, what questions should one ask a breeder before they purchase a puppy from them and how to choose a puppy? Good breeder should health test for all issues within the breed, no excuses. A good breeder also will be registered with their states controlling body. perhaps find out how often they breed, and if they show, how well their dogs do. What specific items should one purchase before getting the puppy? Normal stuff, food, bedding, leads (i prefer soft collar with lead) Breeder will be able to give you advice on what food you can raise your puppy on What to do the moment the puppy is home and how to schedule a timetable to include play, exercise, training, housebreaking and socialisation? Do what is comfortable, put him down and let him explore. he needs to familarise himslef with your house and you. Toilet training, you need to put him out whenever he wakes, eats, and about every half hour apart from that. RE: Socialisation, i took my puppy into work for a day, and OH work for a day, I am good friends with the breeder, so am lucky to take him to her house for socialization with her dogs, and to my future MILS to socialise with her dogs. He is now 12 weeks and had his last shot, so can take him out into the big wide world What to do about socialisation? What about the diseases that the puppy may catch? Try and socialise him 'close to home' family and friends house, where you know that their animals are healthy and havent had any issues recently What to do about toilet training? perhaps you can look at crate training him, this may be beneficial if you arent going to be home to let him out all the time. Not all puppies give signals, so you just have to take out when he wakes, eats and every possibly half hour, and then extend it, as his bladder grows How long should training sessions last and how many sessions should there be on average per day? I do 2 x 10 minutes sessions a day with my 12 week pup, and have done since he was about10 weeks. Make sure you are clear with your commands, and I would just start with one language for now, to not confuse the lil puppy How long should daily walks be for puppies? And how to teach them not to pull on the leash? I took my westie pup for a little walk (15 mins) yesterday now that he has finished his injections. I would say that is sufficient daily for their little legs How to prevent separation anxiety, or solve it if it occurs? Pay no attention to the attention seeking habits Any tips on preventing barking from becoming a problem and how to teach bite inhibitation? with the bite, if he bites an hurts i just say Ow and he stops now Any grooming, trimming, nail-clipping tips and procedures? for nail clipping, as soon as you get him home, teach him to lay on his back, and play with his feet, and then he will learn to lye still when you cut nails Hope this has helped Sarah

I thought of attending a puppy pre school in WA, but most seemed booked out, and I was scared about the free for all situation. My puppy has been out to work wiht me and my OH and socialised at his breeders house, and my In laws house with their dogs..

Not stubborn Sarah - more than likely merely too stimulated by the distractions outside to remember about going to the toilet. Have him on lead if necessary, and just wait. Calmly and quietly. Don't walk him around nor walk around with him (other than to a favourite toilet spot - having him where there are old toilet smells will help get his mind on the job and encourage him to 'go'). Of course, BIG party once he has finished his toilet outside. This will help build a contrast in his mind between what happens when he does it outside compared to the 'nothing' that happens when he's inside. Clearn up in his absence. Not everyone finds this necessary to do with their pups, but I have found it does make a difference and it completely removes any possibility of fun or attention that pup might perceive whilst you're cleaning up. Cute puppy, BTW. Of the "SWF" group, I rather like Westies. Hope you're socialising him broadley and plan to train him. Westies can be fiesty little fellows. A busy brain in a little body . They definately need mental stimulation of good caliber. Hi Erny, and everyone else. We are making tonnes of progress, I am picking up signals, and he has a spot where he likes to go outside, we are having fewer mistakes in, and most of them would be my fault (in fact id say all). What do you mean by "SWF"? He is 10 weeks old now, has had a few trips to mine and my partners work and he has an older companion 'roxy' and has met the in laws goldens, as well as learning to play with our cats. He seems to take it all in his stride, I want him to be dog friendly, and although I know the terriers can be fiesty, I dont want him 'going' for the dog infront in group line ups. I am thinking about taking him to puppy preschool, but he is almost too old. I'll also be taking him back to his breeders (who also breeds poodles and frenchies) to socialise with her dogs. Would you say this is enough? I hav also started on his show training, and luckily he is very food motivated, and has learnt to watch, and hold it already, there is already stuborness with lead training, but i am working on that (he didnt like the lead around the neck, so I have bouht a collar and he is wearing that). Thanks everone again for their advice Sarah

There are two Bowen Therapists I would recommend Jill Hardy (comes to you sometimes) and Tracey Hockley (Jandakot), her husband Len does Humans If you would like the details PM me and I will pass them on. I show a Golden that has had a back injury for quite a while, at 8 y/o Jill treated him, and after treatments he can sail around the ring with no problems. She said if he had been worked on when he was younger, he may not have to have regular treatments (He has seen chiros, physios etc but they never fixed it, and his owner had never heard of Bowen until I told her about it, after seeing how well it had worked on other dogs, and myself!!!)

I love Bowen, but they work mainly with all the tissue /muscular side of things, im not sure if they would work in this case

There is a place in Midland, my mum gets all her flaps etc from them, next time I see her, I will ask

I beleive, you purchase all the ingredients, via Easyio and mix them in there tubes and put in the fridge to 'set' and bam you have yoghurt... Correct me if I am wrong please - my MIL has the stuff, but I have never seen her make it
-
Thank you everyone for their wise words... I definately am expecting too much, considering I work Full time, so the only time we can work on this is in the morning / evening and weekends.. I hope to progress a little next week, when I am home from work. I think Cruise is a wise little man, and is just being a stubborn kid, as I can walk and walk him outside and he just wants to play. We leave the back door open ajar when we are home, and the weather permits... Here he is debating weather to go out or not to stalk the kitty Sarah

Im feeding yoghurt to my pup on his biscuits as he thinks his biccies are bland, he loves it, and its obviously kind to his belly too (no signs of the runs - which i was scared of)
-
my MIL who is a goldie breeder feeds it, and her dogs thrive on it, I feed my two (staffy x and a westie) on it, and they staffy x does very well on it... Not too sure about the little one (westie) yet, hes not a big eater, so Im going to see if its the biscuits. Sarah
-
Thank you all for your suggestions, and I think I was expecting too much too quickly (especially as me and my partner both work fulltime) I have next week off work, so definately can work on it then. Cruise didnt mess in the house this morning, he was loose for about an hour I was sooo proud. He seriously doesnt give off any hints about about to wee, he just does it. I will try the vinigar solution or urine off, because yes, he keeps on going in the same spots, (I mustnt be cleaning very well) Will let you know any further progress. Sarah

I have just got a Westie, so will be learning how to handstrip, he is only 9 weeks old and the coat isnt ready to come out yet... ive been told that at about 16 weeks he will be ready to fully strip, then I can work on it week to week as it comes back to make it look the way it should. Oh and the dane 'stripping' I have done this when I have noticed my mums bitchs coat dying, she gets dull spots, so I pull it all out, the same coudl be done for a staffy I guess Its going to be lots of fun learning..
