  1. Hi everyone. As some of you may know i am moving premisis and opening up a new grooming shop. Well now i am upto dryers . Really like the idea of the Liberty arm dryers (http://www.libertyinternational.com.au/dryers.html), as they hang off the wall and i like the idea of reducing the amount of "stuff" on the floor. At present i have been using the Simpson stand dryer and they are great. Was just wondering if any of you have used the liberty dryers, how you found them? and what the maintence is like? Or if you know of any other brand of dryer that make a wall arm that might be better suited to a professional grooming salon. any feedback greatly appreciated
  2. Yep i agree you will want to book ahead esp at this time of the year, it all good and well you want your dog done in 2weeks doesnt mean to say any good groomers will have time to do it then but. I always say a busy salon is a good salon, i would be weary of anyone who can take your dog in at short notice there is normally a reason for that. As far as skin issues go, depending but somthing medicated like Malaseb or soothing like an oatmeal/ aloe vera shampoo is in order, discuss with the groomer on the phone when making the booking, again good groomers will have a range of shampoos on hand for your dogs needs. Good Luck- Dont forget to post some pics of his new do!
  3. I do what the owner wants. I will mention to them that for there breed clipping is generally not advisable and that it may cause the coat to grow back less than desirable, often they still insist. At the end of the day it is there dog and they are only pets who will prolly be clipped all the time anyway. Then there are them other cases where the poor dog is so bad it would be cruel not to shave them. To many times i have spent hours and hours, days and weeks getting a coat back into condition only for the owner to not keep it up.
  4. Dont think that applies in this case- surley Good luck i have a big box full of ezy dog products in my salon atm that i have marked down to try and get rid of, i always found it difficult to sell/
  5. Thanks Clyde for keeping me in mind. I looked into them cage modules (the type vets have) and they were just way to expensive. A three bank module with 2 small cages on top and one large cage on the bottom was about $12-$15K in stainless steel and $10- $12K in fiberglass, and i would need several of these units for for my requirments. What i have decided to do now is still build the cubby hole system but slot the crates i have now into the holes. ATM i have 8 small/medium crates and 2 Jumbo crates stacked in the salon with boards between each crate so the dogs cant see each other, i will just build the srrounds for the crates and get a few more new crates no point wasting the crated i have now they are only about 12 months old. Hopefully should look good and each crate can then just be slid out of its cubby hole for vacuming and cleaning etc. I have decided that not crateing the dogs would just be to stressful for me i will endevour to explaine to clients why crates are good and that they will not traumatise your dog, but at the end of the day if you dont want your dog crated you can go else where.
  6. Dog groomer required for a busy and rapidly expanding dog grooming salon in Sydneys east. Must have expiriance. Please contact me to discuss further. Call Brad on 9341-5590 or email [email protected]
  7. what i normally do is saturate the coat with conditioner and then using the HV force dryer with the condenser nozel on get right in there and use the air pressure to seperate some of the matting then i finish drying with a stand dryer brushing like mad with a pin brush and slicker. That should have hopefully losened up the knots a fair bit then i just go mad with a mat removing tool and coat stripping tool. Good luck its very hard going, i had one in a few months ago- took me nearly 5 hours of solid work to get him fully dematted and brushed out, lucky he was a very good boy and very patient, but if not its a good idea to do it in sessions. Make sure you charge accordingly a samoyed in that state is a big job especially if they dont want to shave him.
  8. Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou !!!!!   You are an absolute star- i dont know how you do it but you manage to find these things that i have spent months searching for  - Me Likie!
  9. How long does it take? Not all that long really, we usually do just the tail or ears and tail. Before they get a bath we put on the colour using a tint brush and wrap each bit in foil. Leave it on for 15- 25 mins depending on the coat type and intensity of colour desired. We just put them back in their crate and go onto another dog while the colour sets, then just wash it out and groom as normal, very quick the aplication takes about 5 or 10 mins and its easy. Customers love it and its an oppertunity for us to boost out bottom line a bit
  10. Yep i have had a few of them as well. Its like they just assume you have sedatives on hand and you will figure out they need sedating and just give it to them- well that seems to be the adittude of the ones i have had. I now some groomers sedate but we dont and have it advertised everywhere. Very irrisponsible of that owner glad your ok but.
  11. Ok Change of plan Any of you genious's know anywhere to get them cage modules, the sort in the picture Nehkbet first posted. They were my first idea but i have not been able to find an Australian supplier. Thanks for all the Hints guys- always great to get some second opinions from people who know
  12. Ahhh good point grooma. See this is why i love DOL someone always comes up with everything
  13. ooops posted while i was. Thanks they look great- great price to. They are pretty similar to the creates i have now, trying to come up with somthing new- but it appears you are all boring and lazy like me and use cages . I know of groomer who use just hooks on the wall and tie the dogs up but i think they would get dirty on the floor after just being groomed and you would need alot of space to keeps the dogs tethered far enough apart from each other to prevent fights.
  14. Thanks for the link Ari. I was thinking of having triple story "cubby holes"- large ones along the bottom for big dogs and 2 rows of smaller ones ontop for the small dogs. I owuld not have enough floor space to have them all on the ground level. I dont really get the point of them holding bays in the link as the chains where long enough for the dogs to wonder out onto the floor and the boards in between not high enough to prevent the dogs getting to each other. The proposal i have discussed would have each cubby hole fully enclosed except for the front. They would also be quite deep and the dogs chains very short preventing them going anywhere near the edge, i to had worried about dogs hanging themselves. I admit that crates are a much easier idea! i know the dog is on there totally safe and free to move around, but one the girls who workes for me said the place she use to work for had this system and it was great and very popular with customers. I have quite a few customers who wont let me crate there dog so we try and juggle them tying them up around the place and trying to get them out asap. I have also heard through the grape vine that several customers have not come back after their first visit here not because they were not happy with the grooming, but because there dog went in a crate. Just trying to figure out in my mind how it will work ( the girl who told me about it is not much help she dont remember much about the other place she worked at)
  15. My Shih Tzus get bathed every 5 days and my poodles every 7-10 days atm. Never had a problem, i use good quality dog shampoo and conditioner (actually i have even be converted to human stuff on the Tzus with very good reults). I have many clients dogs also who have been comming in once a week for a bath for many years now without ever a problem. I say bath your dog once a week he will be fine and he will look and smell great
  16. Thanks Nekhbet, that first pic is pretty much the idea i had in mind. I love them sort of fiberglass or stainless steel vet cages but they are pretty much still a crate/ cage. I did look into them but found it hard to find someone who made/ sold them. They look very nice but. Bloody google is right , i found nothing when i did a search. Sorry about the porn hope it did not burn your virgin eyes
  17. well the idea is it would essentially be like a crate but insted of wire bars, it would be solid wood walls and insted of having a door in the front the dog would be attached to a short lead at the back of the "cubby hole". I am not one of them groomers who could let the dogs run around the place, a bit to much for me , i have only ever used crates personally and all the other places i have worked prior used crates. I was just thinking new shop, new idea and have herd of groomers using this system but never actually spoken to one. Just curious about alternatives to crates is all. And if anyone has any pictures of the benching areas they use at shows (if you know what i am talking about ) that i could use to show my desinger, cause i dont think he has the faintest idea what i am talking about- and i have not been able to find any on the net.
  18. I am in the process of opening a new grooming salon and i was looking for some suggestions from other other groomers as to where you keep the dogs while at the salon. At the moment i have a large bank of crates (rudducks) small ones and Large ones. In my new salon i was thinking of having the holding bay/ bench type things they have at the royal shows, do you know what i'm talking about? I have found that alot of people dont like the idea of there pet being "caged" while they stay with us for a few hours, i also know of some other grooming salons who use this type of "pigeon hole" system. Just wondering if any other groomers have used this type of holding method, or what other systems you have used to manage the dogs in the shop, i have only ever used "cages". Thankyou
  19. we do clip JRT on occasions and have not had any problems. We charge $50- $60 in Syndey so i would assume you would expect to pay less than that. Hand stripping may be another option you could look into?
  20. I offer it at my salon- we use Dyex colour for dogs. It does not harm the dog in anyway and if an owner wants to do it then why the hell should' nt they. One of mine has a pink tail at the moment- result of a slow winters day in the salon and bored groomers
  21. Awwww poor Rumor, i hope she is feeling better soon
  22. best idea is to send the Mangos and pawpaw to me- 2 of my faves
  23. Yep most groomers the bath is just part of it I dont know Shell but i didnt want you thinking you were dog was filthy and neglected
