Thanks Rappie - your posts are always very interesting and informative. I had a chat to the vets at work today regarding this topic. They are aware of the need to be a little more cautious with sighthounds, but not Sibes - and they have never had any issues when putting a Sibe under a GA. Even so, we've chosen to go with Alfaxin instead of Thiopentone.

Thanks Rappie. Do most clinics use Isoflurane these days, or are there still some that are using older style anaesthetics? Do you know what type of reaction? And 'sensitive' in what way exactly? Did they die on the table, or during recovery? Were the Sibes otherwise healthy, and were they under the GA for routine procedures or something more serious? I'm not doubting you, I'm just trying to get my head around it really.

Thanks Shell and Rappie. So Rappie, would you say that Huskies in particular do not neccessarily need special consideration when going under a general? Assuming there are no other obvious health issues such as those you mentioned (underweight, overweight, heart murmur, very young/old etc)?

Hi guys I have seen it mentioned several times that care should be taken when putting Sibes under a General Anaesthetic. I'm just wondering if anyone has any further info or experiences on this matter? One of our Sibes may be needing to go under GA for a dental soon. I will be having it done at the clinic where I work, so will most likely be doing the anaesthesia myself. I'm just wondering how common it is for Sibes to have problems with this. The particular dog in question has actually been under GA before with no problems, and we will be running a pre-anaesthetic blood profile first so I'm not overly worried. I'm just curious really to hear about any experiences that others may have had. cheers Penwing

Our local pet store has a DIY hydrobath salon in-store, so you can bring your dog down and wash them yourself. The warm water and shampoo are provided, and on Mondays and Tuesdays it only costs $2 :D (or $10 on any other day). I'm pretty sure that also includes use of their dryers as well, which is especially handy in winter. I'd love to have my own hydrobath but at this stage I'm not sure I could really justify the cost.

We've had our puppy for about a week and a half (she's 10 weeks old) and have found crate-training to be a godsend - it helps so much with the toilet training. She has a designated 'potty' area which we take her to frequently - after she wakes up, after a drink or a meal, after playtime. We are teaching her the command 'potty time!' and whenever she eliminates in the correct area she gets lots of praise and petting. She's getting to the stage now where we can take her almost anywhere, and when we say "potty time!" she will relieve herself almost straight away. She's also started to take herself to the potty area without prompting. She is crated overnight (with either myself or my OH getting up at least once in the night to take her to the potty) and so far she's only had one accident in the crate - and that was the first couple of days we had her. Since then she's been pretty good. Cleaning any 'accidents' on your carpet is really important - make sure there is no ammonium chloride in the cleaner you are using, as it will encourage the dog to use that area again. We just bought a Bissell Pet Vacuum which also shampoos the carpet, and it's really effective at removing doggy odours. Good luck and just stick with it

I feed it to my two Cavaliers. They are on the Hills Prescription R/D dry food for overweight pooches.

We've never bothered to set money aside specifically for vet bills. If our animals require treatment, we just pay for it out of our bank account. As far as pet insurance goes, that sounds pretty reasonable!

If it were my dog I'd be off to the vet, I wouldn't take any chances.

I have always thought pet insurance was a bit of a ripoff, although having said that - it's been a few years since I looked into it and things have no doubt changed a bit since then. I work in a clinic anyway and get all products/medications/surgery etc at staff rates, so it may not really be worth my while to fork out monthly premiums on 4 dogs.

At the clinic where I work, all castrates and speys are given both pain relief and antibiotic injections at the time of surgery, and in addition to this they are sent home with a three day supply of Rimadyl. The Rimadyl is not an 'optional extra', it is built in to the cost of the surgery.
