  1. The Victorian Domestic (Feral & Nuisance) Animals Act 1994 is very clear in what is defined as a "dangerous dog" and a dog which has undergone protection training is automatically to be declared "dangerous". The D(FN)AA 1994 is state legislation and all Councils must enforce provisions of the Act.
  2. As mentioned by Miranda give Delete a go. Its very economical and works wonders. I have been using for about 6 months at the pound and its great.
  3. Flakey skin and skin and coat conditions can have something to do with the dogs diet. What is your dogs current diet. You may find by adding omega 3 oils or tuna or sardines to the dogs food may help with his flakey skin. Also, if bathing i would be using a good qaulity shampoo and conditioner such as dermcare (malasaeb or something for senistive skin). Food idea to get him on a regular flea treatment. There are many products available, so you might need to try a few to see which works best for you. If the problem persist. i wold get the Vet to have a look him.
  4. Keep an eye on it. Cat bites and scratches turn into infections and abcesses very easily.
  5. Maybe a good idea not to take your puppy to puppyschool, just incase it is something a little more serious, that might put other pups at risk. I would be making an appointment with your vet for tomorrow. You also said that you are feeding two cups of dry food in the morning and two cups in the evening. That is alot of food for a pup. My adult Vizsla only has two cups of dry food per day. Maybe you are overfeeding? Might be a good idea for you to speak with the Vet about a diet. As other have said, dogs with diarrhoea become very dehydrated. Make sure he has plenty of fresh water available until you see a Vet. Also might be an idea to ask the Vet about getting some Lectade, which is an electrolyte replacer. Always good to have a few sachets on hand. Good luck, hope its nothing too serious. Let us all know hoe Kaos goes at the Vet.
  6. You really only have 2 options. 1. Having the dog PTS 2. Building a escape proof enclosure. You are exeptionally lucky that the council haven't taken any further action. You dog could/can be seized and destroyed by the council for attacking another animal or decalared dangerous. The council can also take you to court and charge you. You are aware that he able to escape and now you are aware that he attacked another animal and now you have extra respsonsibilities as an owner of a dog which has attacked to ensure that it never happens again. Its not fair on your neighbours, their animals, your dog or yourself if you are not able to securely confine him in a escape proof enclosure. You can easily erect an enclosure using star pickets (with protection caps) or poles, welded mesh or concrete re-enforcement. Do you have a shed or garage that you can extend by putting an enclosure on the outside giving him extra room and protection? Also, i would looking at doing a semi concrete floor, as a concrete floor would be exspensive. For example use crushed rock as the base, compact it and level it (excellent idea to have it sloping one way to make for easy cleaning and drainage. Wet the crushed rock. Then sprinkle the top with concrete, apply water via a mist and evenley smooth over and let dry. You can also seal it using paving paint etc. You can apply a product to the paint to make it non slip. Its like a gritting agent? All the products you will need will be available from bunnings, hardware centres and a garden centre (for crushed concrete). Its will only cost you a few hundred to erect it all and will give you peace of mind knowing that he is secured whilst not under your supervision. There is plenty of environmental enrichement toys etc available and daily rotating of these toys and large marrow bones will ensure that he isn't bored. Look at purchasing 20-30 toys including good qaulity one like kongs etc and cheaper ones, and rotate daily giving hime 3-5 new ones each day. In the warmer months you can freeze in a 2-4l ice cream container some fishy cat food in stock flavoured water. Twice daily on lead walking and play times in the backyard with your other dog will also keep him occupied. If you don't have a shed or garage to extend an enclosure onto, then make sure you provide a kennel, shade protection either by placing the enclosure under a tree or using shade clothe.
  7. Well, I purchased a 1L bottle of Delete to see how it goes. And so far I am very impressed. We have a range of products that we use at the pound including Virisafe, Bleach, F10 and Tutti Frutti Disinfectant and they do the job but don't really eliminate the smells. I cleaned the pound this morning and used a capful of Delete to a hot bucket of water. It smelled great and the pound was still smelling fresh and pepperminty this arvo. I did the pens again this arvo so will see how it smells in the morning. The real test will be when tom cats urinate. You just never seem to be able to remove that smell.
  8. Will be buying some to use at the pound to see how its goes. Hopefully it will remove some of the smells.

    The Flu

A visit to the vet is a must! It will ease your mind and if its anything serious then it can be treated early. http://www.petzwithpizazz.com.au/welcome/page9.php What are the main infectious diseases affecting dogs in Australia? Canine Parvovirus: A severe and highly contagious disease that effects dogs of all ages, but is most severe in young puppies. It is transmitted to a dog when it comes in contact with faeces from an infected dog. It attacks the gastrointestinal tract and symptoms of the disease include vomiting, bloody diarrhoea, severe abdominal pain and depression. Dogs can die within 24hrs of contracting the disease. Canine Hepatitis: Once again it is also a highly infectious disease which can effect dogs of all ages, but puppies are most at risk. Transmitted by ingestion of infected urine, faeces and /or saliva. Symptoms include fever, lack of appetite, diarrhoea, abdominal pain due to an enlarged liver, jaundice, depression and eye lesions. All dogs young and old can die within 36 hrs or contracting the disease. Canine Distemper: Highly contagious and fatal disease. Transmitted by inhalation of secretions from an infected dog and from contaminated dust. It attacks the nervous system and symtoms initially include fever, discharge from the eyes and nose and respiratory problems, loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhoea. Canine Cough: Highly contagious.Commonly transmitted by close secretions from an infected dog - possibly in kennels, at dog shows or even at the park. Main causative organisims are parainfluenza (a virus) and Bordetella bronchiseptica (a bacteria). Symptoms include a harsh, dry hacking cough that may persist for weeks, conjunctivitis, tonsillitis and nasal discharge.

Agree. Are you also attending puppy school? Highy reccomend that you look into is ASAP if you are not already doing. Make sure the person who is taking the class is experience and/or have some qualifications in Animal behaviour or dog training, not just someone who has decided to start up puppy school.
  11. Kaywoman68, 3 Dogs are permitted without a permit where Vivien is. Vivien, Have you contacted Anyone about puppy School yet?
  12. Hi Vivien, I do Hope that Ginger does eventually turn up for you. Finger Croosed. I know it probably feels like she has been gone forever, but it has only been two weeks. Dogs turn up months later. So i would be assuming that someone has found her and is holding onto her. Remember to still continue to visit and contact the pounds and shelters atleast once a week for the next month or so, just to be sure, she may escape from where she is (if someone has her). As for puppy school i donrt think you can go past: Planet K9 Puppy Classes are held at Epping or Keilor Park You can check out their website and contact details by clicking on the link on my signature.
  13. No surgery is simple, However a dog castration is fairly straight foward. Most clinics i know generally perform option Three "BRONZE". IV Fluids are generally only neccasary in lenghthy surguries or for animals 7yo +. Pre-anaesthetics Blood test is a personal choice and is up to the owner. There is one test that is vital. Generally only applicable to Dobermann owners. its very simple and its to ensure that the blood clots. I would strongly reccomend speaking with other Vets (Outside the Bayside Suburbs) and getting quotes and opinions, also speak with your vet and ask for a better understanding of their options and their reccomendations. The average price for a Dog Castration is $80-150. IMHO because of your location and the "general" type of clientele in that area, i think you will find that the prices are higher and these options are made available, which are sometimes not neccasary.
  14. If the dog is such a high risk of biting someone, It would be very foolish and neglegent for any rescue to rehouse this dog. Maybe worth having a veterinary check and also having someone else also do a temp assessment. If he fails that, IMHO the rainbow bridge would be the best place for this fella.
  15. Yes Planet K9 is run by Nicole who also ran it at Lilydale.
  16. Planet K9 in North Melbourne is still running. Excellent establishment. Couldn't reccommend an establishment more. Have heard alot of things in relation to Vern Ryan. None have been good. If looking for a training establishment, Look around there are plenty of good ones such as Planet K9, 4Paws etc.
  17. I generally feed my girl Eukanuba Premiun Performance, but when i ran out she get Supercoat. She will eat the Eukanuba with problems, but she will take her time eating the Supercoat, somerimes take her 12hours to eat the supercoat. She is an extreamly active dog and i find unless she is on the Eukanuba she looses weight and condition quickly. Sometimes for a change she also get a tin of The Naturual Choice mixed in with her dry.
