  3. My interpretation of the Domestic Animal Act is that owner or person in charge (as the case requires) of a dog which attacks is liable for an offense under Section 29. There is no exemption under this section relating to the attacking dog (if on lead) being approached by an off leash dog in an on lead area. Each Council has the power under Section 26 of the Domestic Animals Act as well as the Local Government Act to make an order/local laws in relation to on and off leash area within their Municipality. You can find more info about the legislation at www.dpi.vic.gov.au/animalwelfare

  6. There are four national microchip registries; The National Pet Register Australian Animal Registry Central Animal Records Pet Safe Then there is the NSW Companion Animal Registry (for NSW residents). I would encourage NSW pet owners to also list their pets microchip registry also. Aslong as your animals details are current and upto date on one of the four national registries, you will be ok. If an animal is impounded and microchipped, the council/pound/shelter can check www.petaddress.com.au which will let them know which one of the four national registries that microchipped is listed on.
  7. Acupunture can also be very effective. Speak with a Vet with experience in this field, including the use and placement of old beads. Have 1st hand seen the results.
  8. Not a fan of VIP, they had a recall a few years ago. I would be going for Ecopet over VIP.
  9. I was going to make the exact same comments. I don't think Dakota is too skinny. Exactly! Dakota is a perfect weight, she doesn't need to loose any or put on any, just needs to maintain. I would also be getting rid of the tin food. Its very rare but actually amazing to see a Labrador or Pug at an ideal weight. I'm not a massive fan of either breed, they generally don't do anything for me, but when you see them at a correct weight, they are beautiful looking dogs. Very rare to see, unfortunately.
  10. I would be speaking with the DDC again and finding out some more information. This is a serious injury. I understand very well that accidents happen, sometimes we are unable to prevent them. This is a pet care business that provides service to pet owners. Not sure what the laws are over in SA, but in Victoria DDC must be registered with their local council as a domestic animal business, and comply with the relevant code of practice and Domestic Animals Act. They must also have public liability insurance. Just like a dog training establishment, If another dog attacked your dog, the training establishment would be reponsible for the cost of any veterinary treatment, although you would hope that the other owner would pay them. Because it occured whilst they were providing a service at their premises and under their care. Anther example would be, if your dog was at DDC or boarding and it ingested poison or was bitten by snake, they would be responsible for the cost of veterinary treatment as the animal was under their care. I normally wouldn't encourage this type of attitude, but this is a seroius injury and pet care professionals who are providing a responsible and professional service must have public liability insurance for this purpose. Good luck and hope Rosie is feeling better! p.s I have seen and met many dogs who have coped exceptionally well with 3 legs.
  11. I wouldn't feed VIP rolls. They had a recall a few years back. I would recommend and occassionally use (great for training) Ecopet rolls.
  12. FYI - purchasing Evo and Innova is supporting the sale of pets in petshops. Pets Good Direct is also affiliated with PP. I would purchae thoses brands of food or shop at either store out of principal.
  13. As others have said they are affiliated with PP. Wouldn't be buying from there on principal.
  14. Innova and Evo are available at PP and Pet Goods Direct and now Pet R Fun. I have been informed that all three stores are affiliated with each other, and know for sure that the first two are. I wouldn't purchase either brand on principal.
  15. Thiobarb is probably the most common anaesthetic used. Alflaxan is also another common anaesthetic, which IMHO animals recover quicker and better from.
  16. Would be a good idea to treat your vehicle. Either flea bomb or frontline spray etc. Also, if you can, flea bomb or insecticide under the house. Once you have flea bombed the house might be an idea to use a product like Defender http://www.scottsaustralia.com.au/Defender...der_HomeDefense We have a used a similar product at the pound to help with insects and ants and its been brillant. Treating them for fleas atleast 24hrs before coming into care should also help reduce and eliminate the problem. Have you thought about writing a letter to companies like Merial (frontline and heartguard) or Novartis (Capstar) and asking them if the could sponsor Albury Dog Rescue or donate producit to ADR. They may supply old or damaged (package) stock. If you are able to ensure animals coming into care are not infested all you need to worry about i maintaining the home environment and transport.
  17. I work and live in the western suburbs and have only heard of 3-4 cases of parvo this year in this side of town. I work with a few Vet Clinics and speak with many others and always ask about parvo etc They guys at 4paws are very experienced in their field and would ensure their training environment is safe. All dogs that come into that environment should be vaccinated and they should check this before a class starts. I really think that it is important to continue surpervised socialisation and I would continiue to take your pup to puppy school. The chances of your pup picking up parvo in a controlled environment where all dogs are fully vaccinated or have received their 1st and 2nd vaccination is very unlikely. If the classes were run in a park or something on grass, I would say don't take him. However, knowing 4paws and their training environment I wouldn't be too concerned about my pup contracting parvo, even though classes are run in a paddock. Too many puppy owners are over paranoid and don't provide enough supervised socialisation, which can be detrimental on pup, especially when they are older. Exactly. IMHO, Far more dogs are PTS each year because of behavioural problems, mainly due to the lack or socialisation and training than those who die from Parvo. I not a big fan of puppy classes that are run at Vet Clinics, I will reccomend some that I know personally know how their puppy classes are run. For example, the Yarraville Village Vet Clinic have puppy classes which are conducted upstairs in room designated for that purpose and not used at all by other patients. The floor is impervious and is cleaned after each class using an appropriate disinfectant and classes are held by an experience and qualified dog trainer, not a junior vet nurse like some Vet Clinics have. You have only had your pup for two weeks and you are going too be paranoid about taking everywhere else until he has had his final vaccination in a few weeks, which IMHO could be detrimental for your pup in later life if you discontinue puppy classes. I would continue to take your pup to classes as its sounds like it is going to to be his only beneficial socialisation he will get over the new few weeks.
  18. If you are using a Phenyl based product, make sure that you do not have cats or that you thoroughly rinse the area. Phenyl is toxic and can be deadly to cats. The most economical and water saving method of using a disinfectant is by using in a weed pump/spray pack. This ensures the product is evenly distrubuted and that hard to reach area's are disinfected.
