Sydney Royal Show Flyball - Day 2 Added

Gooo Soaks and Jedi!!!!!! -
Gooooooooo Daisy!!!!! She's really coming along nicely!! Nothing to do with obedience.... but Soaks had a really successful training session at Sydney Royal for flyball (in the lunch break)! She did at least 8 full runs with no mistakes!! I'm so proud of her - the atmosphere and environment are very different to what she's used to training in! She's in the demo on Monday, so fingers crossed that goes just as well! Here's some piccies -

That makes two of us!! Ahsoka has decided that the article I want her to bring me is the UN-scented article of the two!! Tonight she sniffed them both and then quite decisively picked up the non-scented article. Three times in a row! Terranik - are you using the same heavily scented article and when Ahsoka brings back the wrong one are you replacing that with a clean new one? Have you tried putting the articles really close together say 10cm? They're 10-15cm apart. And yep - the wrong one is replaced with a clean one. And yep, it's the same heavily scented article. Even *I* could smell the difference between the scented and unscented (I had just broken up her treats by hand).

Aim for an average of 10km/hr. Make sure you also train the dog to do slower and faster (up to 18km/hr) to compensate for various things such as if the dog needs to toilet you then have to catch up to the rest of the group and take up your previous position in the line.

I guess it's the same as with humans - although someone might be *able* to run for 15 minutes straight, for example, when you're first starting fitness training or running, you don't want to jump straight into it or you'll get injuries... It's best to ease into it at a much lower distance than you could potentially do. Plus, running along side a bike is a pretty foreign thing for most dogs, so a short positive session at the beginning is always a good opportunity to introduce the bike.

All the best, Michelle!! And if you get stuck with anything there is a wealth of knowledge in the training section here!

I'll be watching the Keeshond specialty and the Kelpie specialty. Can't wait!

Woohooo!! 6km! That's excellent!! Our max has been 3km, so we're halfway... It's perfect weather at the moment for him though - raining and 23 degrees!! I will be getting him out a lot this week!

Lovely seeing Cider do so well!!!!!

Took my two to obedience training tonight... Gave Jedi the night off and did some work with Ahsoka (and Woofenpup's Abby). Soaks is going so nicely now! I don't know what happened, but for a little while it felt we had gone back a few paces (it could've been her season) but tonight she was a lovely little worker!! If she heeled like that every time we trained, I would sit down and do an entry for her first trial! She even did a nice rock solid SFE! She's doing nicely with the scent work too... Picking out the correct one most of the time... She makes a real effort to let you know she's SNIFFING... LOUDLY... :D

Jedi's doing 25 minutes now... He's still loving it! I've been a bit slack with our training - only getting out about twice per week, but we are doing a lot of 'cross training' (aka flyball )
-
If she's had her vaccinations (which she should've by 16 weeks) yes, she's old enough to be taken to a club for obedience training.
-
Yeah, that is the only downside to it... Oh yesssssss!

Yay for River! Good luck Xena!

Both my two are clicker trained... I often train one with the other in the room. My two both know when it's 'their turn' so having the same marker (or clicker sound) isn't an issue. They have a "Jedi's turn!" or "Ahsoka's turn!" cue so they know who is going to get rewarded for behaviours... and they have a release word when we're done. Do you mean how do you progress training focus with the clicker? Or how to do you use the clicker outside of the house?

I learned my lesson!!! No more beagles for me!

PM sent ;)

Nah, I think you just rock up ;) I know someone who goes on the Wednesdays with her Leo - I'll ask her.
-
Castle Hill have classes on Tuesday nights and Wednesday nights (different people running them). I think they both start at 7pm. The other show training class that come recommended is with Luci Ellem in Austral. http://www.camarna.com/show&conf.htm

Ooh I'm interested.... Would you accept $50 for the lot?

It didn't work for me either, but I found the correct link... Great videos!

I just did some scent work with Jedi and he's picking out the scented metal from one other metal about 75% of the time. He's sometimes just picking up any and others making conscious decisions. Soaks on the other hand is a natural! She's always used her nose well though. I just started hiding food for her to find and she'll find it even when she's been out of the room! I can't wait to start on articles with her!!

Me too! Though I just did a ton of flyball work with them both so I think they're a little exhausted. Maybe I'll wait an hour or so. Scent work isn't the most strenuous activity...
