Jedi goes nuts over lamb and beef lung, but I have never seen (or looked for) kangaroo.
-
So did I... Cute pup all the same though!!

I think it can develop into an obsessive compulsive behaviour. Jedi chases his tail sometimes, but it's because it's itchy!! So we let him do it. He stops once he's got his tail and relieved the itch!

Release Command Gone Wrong
TerraNik replied to MonElite's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Well at least she came back!! -
And you've stopped now??? My friends are probably sick of hearing about Jed!

Visual Vs Verbal - Which Is Your Dog?
TerraNik replied to JulesP's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Jedi is definitely visual. The only command that he will follow verbally is sit. The rest it has to be his hand signal +/- verbal. I'm sure if I shut up, he would still follow the hand signals. -

Congratulations!!!!!

Good luck!!!! I wish we had a choice about being in a higher class... I think you made a smart decision... My pup, Jedi gets so bored when all he is required to do is sit or down... So I usually do extra stuff with him in the class otherwise I would lose him completely!! I would love to hear how you and Diego do!

Oh yes, puppy teeth are like pins! Adult teeth are not so much. Jedi is going through the same thing as Lucian at the moment (he is 14 weeks). Whenever Jedi gets bitey I ask him if he wants some "ice" and he comes running to the freezer... He settles down after he is done with it. It also diverts his attention away from us!!!!! I have had my share of puncture wounds... OUCH!

Firstly, what Lucien is doing is totally normal for a puppy his age (I am assuming he's about 12 weeks now?). Although it's normal, it certainly doesn't make it easier for us!! The things you have done to try and stop him biting you are good, but you might want to try and let him know that it HURTS! When puppies are with their littermates, they tend to yelp when they have been bitten to hard. This is what you need to replicate. Whenever Lucien bites, you (or whoever he is biting) should yelp in a high pitched voice to let him know it's not okay. If he does this twice in a row, stop play and walk away. You only need to walk away for about 1 minute so that he knows that biting has consequences of no play. Teach this to your kids as well. When you come back to him, get him to sit or do something that you can praise him for and start playing again. Pups start teething around this age as well (lose their teeth at about 5 months, I think) so you might want to try and soothe his gums as well. Try giving him an icecube to chew on (he may turn this into a play toy and chase after it though which is fine if you have tiles!). You could also try putting his chew toys in the freezer to cool them down as well. Good luck! It's a very trying time when your pup is biting...

I agree with all the suggestions. You might want to teach your pup that he gets no attention until he sits. He will learn very quickly! Basically in addition to the turning around and ignoring the pup, the kids (and you) don't pat him until he is sitting. This includes when he meets strangers as well. The worst thing is when your dog goes and jumps on complete strangers! It takes a bit of assertiveness on your part to tell the stranger not to pat the dog until it is sitting, but it is well worth it.

Oh LOVELY!! Jedi ate some duck poo today at the park... Thankfully he knows "give" (ie. spit that out of your mouth NOW!).
-
Just a note with the sardines - beware of fishy breath!! zOMG!

Jed shocks me almost every day! He learned paw-targeting in ONE click&treat and most other tricks/commands followed the same speed of picking it up. He learned high-5, high-10 and wave in a matter of minutes... He has continued to astound me with his ability to pick stuff up! Nothing too flash, but he certainly has a fair few tricks under his belt and he's only 14 weeks old (about 20 commands now??). I have been a little slack with teaching him new tricks lately because of uni exams, but I have 3 weeks holiday as of Friday, so we will be working on some new stuff!

Aww a fellow Jedi! hehe She's cute!

Teaching Hand Touch When Stay Signal Is The Same
TerraNik replied to 4 Paws's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I use a pistol-like signal for touch (index/middle fingers together, rest of hand in a fist) and for stay I have an open palm moving towards his nose. I used to use an open hand for touch, so he will still do touch for that if I have my hand still. If my hand is moving he knows it's for stay (same as DeltaCharlie). -
OMG Maverick is GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!! I LOVE the combination of his call name and show name!!! So clever!!!!! Ooh and Bailey is cute too!!!

I'll second that.

This is Jedi now... Took this last week!
-
Oh Rysup - that second photo is HILARIOUS!!!!!! Jedi is the same... Those keesie genes are strong! We would get home and he would have emptied his water bowl completely!! What we did was get a 6.5L reservoir water bowl, so although he digs the water out, it keeps refilling. It doesn't solve the water all over the floor problem though... This is Jedi 'swimming' on his first few days home... He is much more aggressive with it now though!!!!!
-
I've been doing some work with Jedi now with off-lead heeling... Started using a food lure and now I only need to start with it in front of his face and then move it to my hip and he keeps heeling!! YAY!!!!!! He is holding attention when sitting in heel position and is looking at me most of the time when heeling! I am so pleased with how he is going! Mind you, this all disappears when we go outside, but that's the same with all the commands he knows!! He's getting better with his tricks and basic commands with distraction now though. I am relieved!!!! Thanks to everyone for their help!!!!

Yep, have already decided on that idea - it's a very good one. :D Oh. And as soon as I have him home, there will be many, many photos! Instead of buying a super expensive puppy pen, you can try Bunnings... They have these wire refuse cage (compost isle) things that can be joined together to make a puppy pen! Someone on here posted about it and it is a great idea. They're only $20 each!! We attached Jedi's crate to it by using the clips that they have on the end of the lead (don't know what they're called). Here's a photo of the pen behind him... Best photo I could find.

Training In Other Languages
TerraNik replied to mersonmalinois's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Why wouldn't a person be able to use another language? I am not from Oz, but am curious about the ANKC rules. Do they have a website with their obedience rules? We can use any language here for obedience, agility, etc. Since the USA is so into lawsuits, a person would likely sue if they weren't allowed to use the language they liked the best. I don't understand why it would be an issue either... Who cares, even if it's gibberish! If the dog knows what to do by you saying something nonsensical that you have made up (or another language), what does it matter? Or do the judges need to make sure that the dog has followed your command? I don't know enough about OT's to know...
