I'm using one of these on Ollie (our 15 week pup) at the moment, for the same reason. I've had Ollie for just over a week - and come home to find him missing a collar twice so far. Once the collar was hooked in the fence, the other time in the middle of the lawn (I assume my two had been playing) so for all I know, the collar could have already saved his life Wow, that's lucky! Jedi has been without his collar once when we came home. Like you, I am glad I made the choice to get a breakaway.

We use breakaway collars because I don't like taking the risk of the pups getting strangle if they catch their collar on something.

Nope, I can't help. My long coated breed has that and we trim it, but my short coated beagle never had that happen. Sorry... I hope someone can help you!

How Do You Get Your Dog To Stand Still While You Brush?
TerraNik replied to pennyw74's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
When Jedi wants to sit while I'm grooming him I put my arm under his belly so that he can't sit. He does it less and less now as he knows what he is supposed to do, but that worked for me. If it's just her back that you want to get to can you just get her to lie on her belly? -

I agree with the others... I don't care where my dog walks as long as he's not pulling or trying to go in the opposite direction! He knows "here" where he's required to come back into me closer (not necessarily in heel position). Then when I give him the okay he can go wherever. He is so used to coming back in when he has pulled that he almost does it automatically now!!!! "Woops, I pulled... better go back to her side!" -
Aside from Star-wars related names, my other fav is Phoenix (saving that for our 3rd dog...)

Thanks for the ideas! Jedi has done target training and is able to do multiple commands at a distance (sit, down, stand, stay, dance, wave, shy, roll over... the list goes on) but it's just this one trick!!!!! I will try and incorporate his target training into it and see if that does it. I like the idea of getting him in a bow and then gradually moving myself backwards... We'll see if that helps. I haven't actually tried to work on this since I posted as I have been focusing on some of his obedience work but I think I'll start working on this again this week. Fingers crossed!!

V.i.p. Petfoods Roll For Dogs
TerraNik replied to DogsLover's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I saw the ad on TV last night and I have to say, it looked far from "natural". Whatever way you look at it, it's still processed food. Then again, I have never and probably will never consider feeding meat rolls so I am probably biased. -
Help With Training A Pup To Be Brushed
TerraNik replied to poochmad's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I had similar problems with my pup until I got my grooming table. He just stands there now with a bit of movement, but it's manageable. If you give up now, it'll be just as hard later on, if not harder! It's frustrating but stick with it. As the others said just be firm. I also noticed a huge difference when I changed my brushes... I bought really good ones and he's much better now! I think the other brushes were irritating his skin. Good luck! -
My pup loves passionfruit yoghurt... I did the same as you and checked the internet - found nothing. He has been fine, so I figure it's alright! (Not that he gets it very often!!!)
-
Aww now THAT's cute!
-
Fab! Thanks! Excellent! I just hope Jedi doesn't want to eat the sheep.. He's never seen livestock before, so it could be interesting! Thanks for the tips - I will continue working on his obedience and we'll see how he goes!
-
You could start with your keeshund - they are an eligable breed. Training at EP is at the DogsNSW grounds starting at 9 and going to 3 Sat and 4 Sun. Hawkesbury is 9-11 for beginnings. Really?? I had no idea!! Well then! I think 'beginners' sounds like a good place to start!!!!! Is there a minimum age?? Are there any books or websites one can read to get to know what sort of commands are used, etc? Jedi's only 5 1/2 months so if he is too young to start now, we can at least get him familiar with some commands.

What breed? A Finnish Lapphund. She's 4 weeks old tomorrow, so she'll be joining us in mid-September.
-
I'd be interested to find out about herding in Sydney or nearby areas. We're getting a Finnish Lapphund and my partner is really interested in doing herding with her. It won't be for quite a while though (she's still at the breeders!!! - only 4 weeks old).

Yayay, I will have another puppy to add to this thread soon!!!!! SO excited!
