  1. Mohican - he's beautiful!!!!!!!!!
  2. Wow, congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I reckon my lappie would LOVE lure coursing.. She chases ANYTHING that moves! Sounds like fun!!
  3. I didn't like any of the treat bags available for sale, so I went and bought myself a rock climbing chalk bag and used my old black dog liner in it. It's large, has a great size opening for my large hands and is able to be shut with the pull tie, but holds itself open the rest of the time. I clip it to my belt loops with a carabiner.
  4. We did the same... Used a long line, let Jedi wander and then called him in a really excited voice with some wide welcoming arms! If he didn't come, I reeled him in. He learned that come means you come whether you like it or not! LOL Lots and lots of treats, a play and some pats. Now Jedi will come even when he's having a wrestle with other dogs. The only time he doesn't come is when he's swimming... Gotta work on that! I can vouch for Zero... His recall at OB class is awesome!!
  5. Thought I'd give this a shot with my guys!! Sounded like an interesting exercise!! Jedi - 7 months old, Keeshond. Clicker trained with toy and food rewards. Working on drive training now. Ahsoka - 15 weeks old, Finnish Lapphund. Clicker trained with food and toy rewards. Jedi = 16 seconds Ahsoka = 7 seconds (not bad for a baby puppy!!)
  6. I agree with the crate training.... Especially at first. Once they are toilet trained they can sleep wherever they like including in/on the bed. Just remind your hubby that the puppy won't be toilet trained, so if he doesn't mind the puppy peeing on him when he's sleeping, then the pup can sleep in the bed if he wants!!
  7. I got the impression that the 6 weeks WAS to stay at home with the pup...?
  8. Sweet dreams Ziggy Run free!
  9. Our pups are on Eagle Pack + Raw... But I'm switching over to Orijen + raw to give it a go. I'm going to swap them over to a BARF diet once I find a supplier I'm happy with. I agree with the others though - just find a food that your dog does well on. Some dogs do better on one brand, others do better on another brand. It's just a matter of giving them a shot and seeing what works.
  10. I agree with the others, that any puppy is going to mouth and bite, etc until they learn bite inhibition, regardless of the breed. I don't know what age you got JP, but is it possible that he had learned bite inhibition by the time you got him? As Wolfsong said, samoyeds (and all other spitz breeds) can be very stubborn and willful and will challenge you. I think JP must be an angel of a dog and if I were in your situation I would not be relying on my next pup being the same as JP as I think I'd be setting myself up for disappointment! As previously suggested, I would get a behaviourist in now to show you how to quickly teaching bite inhibition if you are committed to this puppy.
  11. Yep, and now I'm in a panic! His first show is 3 weeks away... I recently met by chance a lady with a pup from the same breeder... so we decided we'd show them together! Now the hard part is pulling this bad boy into line! He's a smart dog, but is kinda ditzy... wants to look & go & do everything that interests him, and it's impossible to keep him from being distracted.. I'm going to try some of the herbal calming drops on the market & see if they help, it might give him the chance to focus more so he can learn. It's really hard to teach a dog soemthing when he pays no attention! Then try some of the food suggestions & see what I can get him to eat. He's really fussy about his regular meals too.. takes forever to eat, and then only when he feels like it. sometimes he'll leave his chicken wing for several hours before eating it.. (after not having eaten since the day before, so he's hungry! ) His lead pulling is another issue that I don't know how to fix.. So I'm assuming Spring Fair is his debut?!!?!? Are you showing Dakota too? Good luck! I'll be there cheering you on!
  12. Yup that's exactly what the design is for. The clip between the d-rings is one that just pulls apart with force. The two D-rings are there so that if you want to use it for lead walking you can - you just hook the lead onto both D-rings and it keeps the clip together. We have them for both our dogs and they are FANTASTIC! The number of times I have got home and a collar has been found on the ground has been enough for me to continue using them -- my dogs would have been caught at least 5 times if they didn't have their breakaways and once is enough...
  13. They might see it as bribery? That the dog learns only to do the commands if it knows it's going to get food...? Just my guess.
  14. Does this mean Aspen is hitting the ring, Shelley!??!?!?! I agree that it might be the food you're using. With Jedi I was fighting the same battle... We tried EVERYTHING (BBQ chicken, raw chicken, cheese, kibble, dog cookies, liver treats, peas, carrots, fish (ew!), cabanossi, sausage, yoghurt drops... the list goes on!) and usually I have to change the treat during a session to keep him semi-interested. Thankfully he loves to learn so he does it because it's fun, not because a treat is coming. Try toys, squeekers, etc to get his attention. I would be training him in an environment with NOTHING else around. Like, the bathroom or something really boring! That way you are the most fun thing in the room... Then build up to being outside.
  15. I set the pace but Jedi can toilet if he needs to. He toilets on command too, so if we're in a hurry I will tell him to go before we start. Usually I'm not in a hurry though. He rarely sniffs, but when he does he tell him to 'leave it' once I'm sick of standing there. I don't care where he walks though - in front, behind, next to me - doesn't matter, unless there is another dog coming and then he has to get into heel.
  16. I laugh because I vacuumed my beagle once when I was a teenager. Don't ask me why...
  17. Oh no!!!!! What an awful, awful thing to have happened!!!!!!!!!!! I hope your puppers recover with no long term effects.
  18. You might want to contact WolfSong, she would probably know?
  19. That's the one that they had looked at, but the OP said that it was full.
  20. Brush Farm is on the weekends (Sunday 2pm) which is at Eastwood. http://www.brushfarm.com.au/obedience.php Hills District is at Castle Hill on Monday nights 7pm - I go there, they're pretty good... most instructors are laid back. It's fun. Sydney All Breeds is at Concord (Sunday mornings) http://www.sabdtc.com/
  21. I have to get a blower soon... I am slowly getting sick of blow drying my kees with the human hair dryer... And with two hairy dogs it's going to become much worse!! Maybe I'll ask "Santa" for one for Christmas...
  22. That's what we have for our pups. They have a sandpit and a pool. Just watch out though if you're worried about wet + sandy dogs...
  23. I taught Jedi to "touch" (nose target) and then just applied it to the bell. So he has a 1" jingle bell hanging at the door and whenever I wanted to take him out I would make him "touch" and then let him out. If I was carrying him out I would ring the bell myself. He just learned bell ringing = door opens. Sometimes he would play with it for fun and we would make him go outside (even though that was not his intention!) so that he learned that no matter why the bell was rung, he would have to go outside! Now he doesn't play with it! There's a video on YouTube of Jedi ringing the bell... It was while we were teaching him to ring the bell - now he doesn't need the command and rings it freely when he needs to.
  24. Yep, Monday nights. New people start any Monday, so just rock up at 630pm on your first night. I think it's $30 to join and then $4/week. Class starts at 7pm, finishes at 8pm.
