Does anyone here go bike riding with their dog running alongside? I go for short rides with my boy Tyson, he absolutely LOVES it but usually can't keep up for too long and I usually end up stopping because I don't want to push him too hard. Poor boy isn't built for running I don't think. I'm assuming breeds like huskies would me more suited to that sort of a thing? And working breeds such as cattle dogs? The reason I ask is when I get another dog in the future i'd like to consider a breed that I could go for long bike rides with. If you do go riding with your dogs i'd love to know what breeds they are and what distance you go. :)

Hi guys. I've come in here to report yet another dog has lost their life because of a negligent groomer. A facebook friend of mine just lost their young french bulldog, this is what the post said: "It's been tough & we're going to miss our best friend. He was at daycare & getting groomed. She put a muzzle on him because he was mouthing her & it restricted his breathing, he suffocated." How can this stuff keep happening??

Well i've just learnt something new! I always thought it was pap-pill-ion, my parents used to own one so that was what I was used to hearing them called. I'll be saying pap-pee-on now. I also didn't know the correct way to pronounce dachshund so i'd just say sausage dog to avoid the embarrassment. I'll be saying "darks-hund" now too. Can anyone tell me how to pronounce dogue de bordeaux??

We have a pool and have trained all the dogs we've owned to swim to the step in order to get out. If they end up in the pool they know where to swim straight away. With that said the pool is fenced so they can't get to it without supervision. If your dog can touch the bottom i'm sure he will be fine. Tyson likes to bomb dive into the pool and goes right under and he's always been fine.

My dog Tyson came from the rescue section of DOL. :D I came on originally asking for advice on what breed would suit me, someone suggested Tyson to me as he fit all my requirements, and the rest is history. I guess I stick around now for the entertainment value, reading interesting discussions, expanding my knowledge etc. It's also nice to be able to relate with other crazy animal lovers like myself, all my friends tend think i'm a bit nuts in that aspect.

Wow, now I think i'm going to take my dogs collars off too. I just worry that if they get lost for whatever reason, people will just assume no one owns them if they're not wearing collars and just choose to keep them (sound stupid but it DOES happen). But really my dogs will never leave the yard even if the gate is open, so I guess I don't have anything to worry about.

Man reading that made me angry, such ignorance. I had a look at his facebook and there's pictures of him cuddling up to pitbull type dogs and wanting to find homes for them. Watch out farmer Dave, you said pitbulls can "notorious for attacking without warning", that dog licking your face might suddenly bite it off! What are you doing?!?! In all seriousness, I think people should send him the link to this thread so he can read how much of a nitwit he is. :D

My family have an 8 year old JRT (at least that's what I assume by her appearance, we were told she was going to be a papillon ) and i've got a 3 year old medium/largish Staffy type rescue mutt.

For The Ladies...if You Own A Big Dog...
Jimmay replied to WillowGirl's topic in General Dog Discussion
I've never had that problem since I always walk Tyson and I get the boyfriend to walk Pixie. :p Plus apparently the collars I put on Tyson look "girly" (they aren't pink or anything but have a lot of bling) so apparently it's easy to see a female owns him. I have had the odd "who's walking who" comment though. -
This. I actually recall seeing a study done on this with a pack of puppies, the lowest in the pack displayed the most resource guarding and the most dominant ones did not. They believe it had something to do with the lower dogs in the pack felt more insecure and therefore felt a real need to guard what was theirs. I do not believe food aggression has anything to do with being dominant. To curb the problem you have to teach the dog that you are not going to be taking their food, and that approaching actually means they get more food. I'm sorry mymatejack but what you are suggesting is very dangerous. I grew up with food aggressive dogs the last thing you want to do is try to assert dominance and challenge them for their food. When I did that as a kid it left me with a scar on my hand I still have to this day.

Very well said.

Argh that really really really pissed me off, and I don't even own purebreds.

Yeah I found it a lot harder than i'd expected too, this is my first dslr which I only got last month so i'm kind of in the middle of learning all of this stuff as well.

Yep, my 50mm is definitely my favourite lense. :D Zero editing done on any of these. Lil Miss LeiLani - I'm sure you'll get the hang of it, the best way to learn is through trial and error i've found.

Just revived my flickr account since i've recently bought my first DSLR. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jibberjabber/

Oh gosh on that note of those people thinking they're photographers... A person on my facebook started her own photography page and is offering to take pictures for people etc. I asked her what camera she was using and she didn't know.. It's obvious from the photos she's just using a point and shoot. I find that quite offensive to be honest because it takes a great deal of work and money to be a professional photographer, can't just decide to claim you one are without any of the expertise, kind of like breeding I suppose. On topic I don't think there's really a genre I dislike. I suppose what doesn't appeal to me are portraits of people cause they're boring. Pictures of animals or kids on the other hand, can't get enough of them.
