  1. I really like the Poopit or Pitpoo, well Christmas is coming up you know
  2. Moselle, Did you end up emailing Mr Linke for clarification today?
  3. I have an 80kg CASD and a 5kg pom x chi, the littlie is the boss here but she is an inside dog and he is outside dog doing his job. All interactions are supervised only because if she goes outside he could mistake her for an intruder so I always let him know she is there and they are fine
  4. Hi Michael, I remembered you came on to post sometimes, I hope that Moselle can see that you weren't breed bashing the Staffy and Mastiff types now
  5. Thanks for that, it really irrits me when the ones that suffer are the dogs and in this case that poor man. Selling giant breed pups at that age is absolutely shameful and I am glad that none were left over, at least that is one small positive in this story
  6. Moselle can you answer this question for me, just out of personal curiosity? I understand that you seem to be frustrated but all capitals are hard to read
  7. Another arena to slam what was more than likely an innocent comment from someone in the RSPCA who actually doesn't support BSL. Moselle, have you contacted Mr Linke regarding your feelings so that he may explain or respond or are they just for public airings only?
  8. casowner the OP said the pics were in an ad, I assume to sell the pups. Oh thanks, I need to put my eyes back in
  9. Memphis09 how did you get those pics, they seem to be taken in the yard with the dogs? Is the boys ears actually cropped? I thought that it was illegal to crop ears in Australia. I am disgusted that this has happened and in no way having a go but just interested in how the photos were taken. Poor puppies too and so the cycle will probably continue, the owners may very well pts the adults but they have ready made replacements there already. Poor man and poor old innocent dog
  10. I did the test and got it first go, I think it was the leather harness that gave it away - I just imagined that some big tattooed guy was at the end of the leash. Seriously if that dog came into the shelter I don't know anyone that could call it a 100% definate pitbull
  11. I had 2 episodes of Donkey my goat breaking into things (including a house) and eating large quantities of ratsak, both times he was given Vit K injections within a couple of hours and suffered no ill affects, so I agree if you have any suspicion get veterinary treatment immediately
  12. I have owned a few Bullmastiffs and Bullmastiff crosses and yes if they are crossed they can easily be misidentified as a pitbull by normal pet people, no one is mastiff bashing but the point is anyone under duress that has there dog being attacked normally goes for the "pitbull" breed reference. Is it fair - no but all you have to do is read the paper or listen to the news after an attack and it is generally a "pitbull attack". I think people are trying to show that it is good that for once a person in the media is not pressing the automatic scare mongering button
  13. Mr Linke was more than likely making comments regarding those breeds as they are reasonably close in appearance to an APBT and also the crosses, it makes more sense to mention those breeds than say that they may have been Poodles, Chinese Cresteds or cross breeds (Sorry if anyone that owns one of these breeds is offended by that comment) I think it is commendable that he was "sticking up for" rather than "sticking it to" the APBT
  14. I have the patio link one with the adapter so I can still lock my sliding and screen doors
  15. I got abused for saving a young border collie pup from the road, I ended up tracking her owners down hours later (country property, dog no id) and as we were on my way to work I had no choice but to take her with me. She proceeded to vomit on me the entire trip - both ways. When they finally showed up to collect her they accused me of stealing her as she wouldn't go on the road (they have stock fences) and said I had ruined her car training Guess what 5 year old border collie now sits on the side of the road everyday and rushes at cars when the pass? :p Everytime I go past the house I have a winge to my OH, and since it is on our way home it is a daily occurence
  16. I am not trying to be critical of you, I am sure with experience you will see that while it is not a fair world, sometimes there has to be hard decisions made. Having worked in a shelter, the reality is the bigger dogs don't get the same opportunities WHY- because they are not as rehomeable as the little cute ones, they can inflict more damage, they are simply not as wanted. Is this fair - no but it is reality. That is why people who buy large breed crosses need to understand the old adage that A pet is for life because even though that is so true it can be changed to A pet is for life, except if your cute and small you may get a second chance. I have grown up with giant breeds my entire life and there is no way in hell I would ever take one to a shelter as I know the risks. I also own my first small dog, courtesy of the shelter I worked at but again a shelter situation is no place for any animal. I also know first hand the immediate temperament changes in my old dog when I took him to work for the day, he went from the most gentle loving dog in the world to this protective, cage biting demon dog that had "Be Careful" signs on his pen and a padlock. All I am saying is that if they couldn't find him a suitable home themselves, which you said they tried to then you have to accept the end result and again they would have known the possibilty of that end result before they signed the paperwork and walked away.
  17. This has got nothing to do with size, but anyone with any common sense would know the difference in damage that a 50kg dog compared to a 2kg dog can do. Comments like that really are not necessary as you asked the opinion about a young 50kg Mastiff type cross that can be dog aggro, you have said the dog was handed over and put to sleep for growling. I personally think that was an acceptable decision to make in a SHELTER situation, based on what you yourself have written. I have bought a much bigger young mastiff cross from a shelter and he showed no signs of aggression in the shelter or at home which is why he was deemed acceptable to rehome, I am sorry again for your friends but again the responsibility lies with them leaving the dog there
  18. He was def put down within 24hrs for growling at the staff and vet when they were trying to do a health check (i asked to make sure, but this is just what the owners were told which was repeated from its original source). You say offloaded, they were trying to do the right thing by the dog the husband was diagnosed with cancer and the wife was nursing him they had to move into a block of units with no room not to mention no time to give the dog quality of life. Because the rspca is the only shelter they were aware of, i myself did not know of the no kill shelters untill i started working at one. But i do realise that there are way more animals who need adoption than ppl coming in to adopt them. My thing was he was not given more than 24hrs that seems a lil harsh. Sorry, but I would have put him down too, a 50kg dog growling at handlers is not on and a risk to rehome, why should they put theirs and the publics safety at risk? The dog may well have been fine outside of a shelter environment but that is where he was put and unfortunately he is the one that paid the ultimate price. When you handover a dog you are effectively signing over all responsibility to that animal and they would have been informed at the time there was a chance he may not have been rehomed, yet he was left there anyway. I am very sorry for your friends situation and illness, truly I am, but that doesn't lessen their responsibilty to their pet.
  19. Agree Souff. Having worked in a shelter and seen the behavioural reactions of the dogs of course his behaviour could be changed. Handovers where I was were able to be walked straight into the PTS room. People hand their dog over and say that your dog is a barker, fence jumper, not good with kids, can be dog aggro well then you might as well give him the green needle yourself. Many times I believe the dogs "issues" were exaggerated so the owners did not feel as guilty for abandoning them, but all they do is minimise what if any chance the dog has of rehoming. Shelters have to be very careful especially with big breeds to protect their staff as any "suss" big dog can inflict deadly damage and many shelter workers are young kids that just love dogs and want to spend time with them. To me the responsibilty lies with the people handing the dog over in the first instance
  20. I need at least $800,000 to finish building our new house the fencing contractors to come and do the roo/emu/deer and dog/house yards then a CO or CAO puppy and all of my furfamily to stay healthy and happy
  21. Kirty, I am so sorry, I am going through this with one of my animals at the moment too. He has been a constant battle for 4 years and it never gets better, I love him to death but the damage, the stress and the vet bills when he does stupid things weigh on me especially lately. I understand your frustration there is a fine line with love and hate. Take a deep breath, stay away from him and take time to calm down before you face the damage
  22. Jed you received support because you are respected and valued and the love you have for your animals is transparent and warming to the heart. The people that did not support you can F@#k right off and crawl back into their hole or whatever self absorbed place they came from. Through your tragedy people have seen what true love encompasses and what determination of the soul can achieve and I for one thank you for that.
  23. Souff, I have the same problem with bloody birds the day the cherries are ready on the tree, I always say "tomorrow is the day" and come out to find nothing but pips on the ground. I am sure the little flying b@stards sit in the tree laughing at my tears and screams of frustration. Then I get in the car and drive to the cherry orchard and pay the grower $12 per kg just to get my fix
  24. Souff's telly has a wonderful little gadget on it and I would have never have bought the set without it. It is called the "Off" switch and probably will be the first thing to wear out because it is the part that gets the most use! Oh and no thanks, I really dont want to see "real"vet action in my living room .... Souff knows what a total wreck a person can look like in the middle of the night when assisting with an emergency C-section! Then again, I suppose they could show those shots of vets trying to find a tiny microchip on the floor, after it had popped out of the folded skin. There would be a pile of scenes that some vet staff would like to see shown about their bosses, I suppose ... interesting thought actually TV is an illusion and an advertisers cash flow .... get rid of the box and get a fish tank instead! Souff But where would we get the fish from Souff from an evil pet shop that no doubt knows that most fish in the aquarium trade are wild caught, I say buy a book or a packet of vegie seeds and spend some quality time with nature
  25. I was going to keep out of this thread but as usual my fingers get itchy. Regulation/Education is what will work - how can someone that simply joins an association automatically be considered a Ethical source to buy puppies you just have to read DOL to hear problems with not only pet shops, puppy farms and registered breeders. I don't sell pups in my store, my decision however why am I less "qualified" to place a pup in a home than some unethical registered breeder or byb or anyone else just because I work in a pet shop? I have over 20 years experience in working in a shelter, training specialised dogs for disabled people including the selection/training etc of them, grooming, lecturing, rescuing, vet nursing, sat on Government Boards regarding Animal Welfare/Regulation etc etc. Read the Trading post, search the internet, look in the local papers far more unregulated sales go through there than a pet shop. Regulate the hell out of crap holes that do the wrong thing - they are a bane of my existance but alienating those that can work together with people will only increase all of the problems. This is what the Animal Industry doesn't get - by focusing on one area you magnify the issues in another and things will never get better because our own agendas/emotions get in the way of what is really important - the animals. My motto is Educate, not alienate because I feel education is far more important than just shutting one door for another 5 to open. I have dropped out of all Animal Industry related groups/boards etc as no matter how passionate I am about the improvement of it I am that disillusioned with the whole system and the blind emotions that go with it as in the end the animals continue to suffer and we continue to butt heads rather than communicate effectively with the same goals in mind. To me that is a shame as I have spent my whole life learning about all areas of the Industry so that I can have an even opinion and in the end all I have done is make my hair go greyer faster and now I live quite happily under my rock with all of my treasured animals who are now my focus.
