Macedon Ranges Animal Shelter
Banshee replied to Banshee's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Thanks Aphra. They know about Rescue Groups and Pet Rescue now... I went and met up with them today about a collie. Very reasonable to deal with. Yay! -
Hi all, I'm trying to ascertain whether the Macedon Ranges Animal Shelter is a legit establishment. They claim that they "source" their rescue animals/dogs from Macedon Ranges Shire pound and they will rehome them as a non profit org, the animals are not desexed when they get to the shelter which would indicate that they would have to have a contract with the pound, but they have no knowledge of rescue groups, namely Victorian Collie Rescue, and advertise their animals on Gumtree. There is no listing for them on the Pet Rescue site. Am I being over cautious by thinking something doesn't sit right? Cheers Jac

Ivermectin Sensitivity & Desexing
Banshee replied to Dame Aussie's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Rex I think you might need to have a look at the research that has been done by a highly respected and promenant university in USA. "Acepromazine (tranquilizer and pre-anesthetic agent)-In dogs with the MDR1 mutation, acepromazine tends to cause more profound and prolonged sedation. We recommend reducing the dose by 25% in dogs heterozygous for the MDR1 mutation (mutant/normal) and by 30-50% in dogs homozygous for the MDR1 mutation (mutant/mutant). " ACP Yes you will need the results of the test to be able to give the correct dosage to a drug sensitive dog, but you are still able to use this drug. As for Morphine, this is only suspected as MDR1 sensitive, and personally I wouldn't use it until research has confirmed the facts. Please Aussie3, just research the drugs before you use them. Some are safe to use when necessary, but under strict safety guidelines, some are definate no nos. -

As well as the Washington State University web site which gives you that actual name of the drugs researched, have a look at www.Busteralert.com This site gives you a list of these drugs with North American Brands and trade names. Between both of these sites you will get a pretty comprehensive list of what you can use and can't use, and can use but in reduced doses. -
I've been reading this thread and wondering what happened to the good old fashion method of paper training that my family has been using for generations with all their puppies. :D In someways it would be similar to the crating method. Put the puppy in a small room overnight every night, such as a bathroom or laundry, (and yes the do cry the first night, maybe a bit the second but the soon get use to it, might even help with the separation anx) and completely cover the floor with paper. After a few nights of this take away one section of paper each night. Within a week there should be only be one section of paper left on the floor, and this is what the dog uses. Use this section until puppy is old enough to understand that they don't toilet in their "living space" and start to ask to go outside. During the day it is necessary to supervise and read the pup, and to section off most of the house until the pup understands that they are to go to a certain spot. The only other thing you will need is patience.... PS: Don't leave any newspapers laying about on the floor...

I really don't have much of a choice.... I'm a collie owner so have to use Sentinal Spectrum or similar. I've never had a problem with it.... and better yet.... no fleas..... ;)

I had to flea bomb my last house a couple of times. For some reason they just kept coming back the same time every year. I believe they were in the dry dust under the house, and as soon as the weather was ripe for them, boom, flea invasion. Easiest way to do it is to stay overnight at someones place. I did it on my weekends away with dogs and all. One night away was enough, strip the beds before you go, and just wipe everything down when you get home the next day. Edited to say: I can't use revolution so can't help you there. I've got collies..... Cheers Jac
