I love that pic! The focus is great and so clear. She loves working in drive  Sorry the pics aren't too clear, my little camera doesn't handle zooming that far too well Get your OH to put the prong on his arm/leg and maybe he might come around? Tried that with him. He's just too soft, especially with her. I'm training them, so I'll do it my way regardless. It was great to watch Steve work with her, I was so proud of her.

It was a fantastic weekend... big thanks to Seita, K9 Force and the lovely people at Camp Tailwaggers. It really helped open my eyes to the things Jane has been telling me... I'm slowly picking stuff up... and given me hope that I can resolve the in-fighting at home. My OH thinks the prong collar is a torture device (to be expected), but I'm just going to pretend he's not negative. The difference in Callista tonight has been wonderful and I will be signing up for the TID distance stuff as soon as I've saved up the dollars. I'm glad Callista was diagnosed with high drive, I thought she was just mental! Great photos Huski, Calli looks very focused in the sit pic with Steve.

It all seems much closer now we have a run sheet for the weekend! Now I just have to hope I don't get lost.... my sat nav takes the weirdest paths sometimes. Hmmm, some of you have bathed your dogs. Guess I'd better do Griff tomorrow so he doesn't smell too much like pee joys of a renal failure dog

I'll be driving down Saturday and Sunday. OH's parents live at Paradise Point, so Griff and I will head back there after the Saturday session and be back on Sunday.

Poor Griffin, I'm going to feel so mean, but he will spend all breaks in his crate, unless on a lead and no off-lead dogs around. he's just too unpredictable... one minute happy, the next picking a fight. And lets face it, he's ugly (cute in a special way) enough without getting beat up. A mastiff or such trapped in a frenchie body... poor mite. Maybe all of us yucky dog people can sit in our own corner (well-spaced out) while all the 'normal' dogs play.

hehehe, I didn't mean to cause confusion over vac papers. Just wasn't sure if we needed them. Thanks for the info Seita.

Couple of quick questions.... 1. I normally walk Griffin on a harness, for his breathing, will this be ok for the training 2. Will we be using the undercover area during the training sessions? I'll be bringing a cool coat for Griff, but just thought I'd check anyway. 3. I've got titre test results for Griffin (well I'll have them next week), is that ok instead of vaccination papers I think that's it. Thanks.

Please We Need Some Advice- Quick

Do you own a crate??? If so, maybe use it to let them take turns being out with you, while the other one stays in the crate. Another option, do you have a baby gate lying around, as you could use this to block a room off and seperate them that way if you don't have a crate. Sorry about the mix up with names before I understand how you feel right now... I still get down about my two, but you just need to learn what triggers the situation and read the signs to know to intervene. A behaviourist can cost a few dollars, but mine cost me under $300 for 3hrs of training (which we split into 2 1.5hr sessions) and it has been worth so much more than that. We were considering putting our female back on a plane and returning her to melb. -

We had similar issues with our male when our female turned up. We've had her since June and they still fight. Our basic issue is jealousy. It sounds like J.P is doing the same snap that our male was doing. The only way I felt I could solve it properly was to bring in a behaviourist to help me find out the appropriate way to control them. This has helped, but the process is slow. There are heaps of people on here way more qualified to give you advice, so all I'm going to suggest is try to give them attention seperately for the first few days until J.P has settled in a bit. He might just be unsure of if this is his home etc. Keep your chin up, it does get better with time, patience and commitment from you. -
Maybe camping. Haven't spoken to OH about it yet. If so, we'll drag the camper up and bring Callista as well, but she won't attend the training.

I just paid!!!! Griffin and I will be there with bells... please don't laugh if I have the smallest dog.

Will hopefully be coming along for the day sessions... as long as it's not the weekend our kitchen gets delivered I should be fine.

I posted this in general, but as Badboyz pointed out, I'll probably find great advice by adding it in here... Can anyone recommend an obedience club / class / school / saving grace that operates on the southside of Brisbane, around the Mt Gravatt area. I'd prefer to use positive techniques, but am open to using correction if the instructor is experienced and can teach us what is and isn't correct. Don't mind if it's at night or on weekends. This is for both my dogs. Main issue - both dogs see me as a resource, my presence is what starts most of the fighting. Bit of info about the dogs - Griffin is a 7yr old male french bulldog that I bought home in February as a rescue. He has bonded quite strongly with me. Callista is an 18mnth old female frenchie that came from Melbourne to join us in June. Griffin - he has a history of not liking larger dogs, particularly male. For the first few months I didn't see a sign of this, apart from raised hair at the dog park when we first arrived and when new dogs arrived after us. I controlled (attempted to control) by getting him to focus on me until he'd calmed down. He ended up having a moment with a staffy, just noise, so I cut back his visits and tried to go earlier when there were less dogs, this was fine, but he ended up having another noise fight with a GSD and at that point I ceased dog park visits. I did a basic obedience course with him when he first joined us and I've kept this up, probably not as much as I should though. Callista came directly from her breeder and has no concept of obedience. At 6mnths she paralysed her back half and while she has recovered, there is a reamining weakness. We've been quite soft on her because of this (not a valid excuse I know) and also we have always seen the issue as Griffin's (again so wrong). She has picked up sit and is slowly learning other commands, but she is pretty disobedient on most things. From day one Griff has been very protective of me and to a lesser extent my OH. I had a behaviourist visit within 2 weeks of Callista's arrival and while we have seen some progress, recently we back-tracked pretty bad. They do fight and it does on occassion draw blood... not anything serious, the equivalent of a graze... but where Callista used to avoid and we were controlling Griff, now Callista starts and finishes everything. We saw the behaviourist again last week, this time with a Greyhound (aren't they just the nicest dogs) to address Griff's response to a strange dog. Since it was a girl, no issues. My two however had a tussel (started by Callista) and our new program recommends getting Callista obedience trained to assert my OH as the leader and then I can start to become involved in her training also. I'm not sure what else I should add, apart from the fact that my OH has opted out of doing the training... so I've asked the behaviourist to help me without him involved. So yeah... I'd love a training club recommendation. Griffin is fine on-lead with other dogs around him (as long as they don't get close enough to sniff) and he doesn't bark or pull to get to them, just hates them near him (in reality near me). Both dogs are lovely on their own and I don't want to make Callista a timid dog around others (I'm still taking her to the dog park and she's slowly becoming more confident) and I don't want to ignore her because of Griff. I'm willing to make the time to do this, but really need help from a trainer that can keep me on track and correct my bad habits.

Very sorry to read about the loss Rascal. Big to you and the pug slugs.

Hey, I'm going thru this at the moment as my boy has been diagnosed with chronic renal failure. Most important thing is to drop the level of protein and phosphate... I think it's phosphate... and salt. My first recommendation would be to get a blood test done and to check the dogs levels. If she is ok, than the change you make might be to move to a diet with no dry food. There are heaps of threads on here about raw or barf diets if your looking for some info about the different diet options. Also, my boy is now on vitamen a & e, b complex and a digestive enzyme plus a general herbal supplement (blank on what's in it). So, maybe contact a natropath vet for some further advice. Oh if you want to stay on dry food, maybe look at switching to hills k/d or royal canine renal.
-
That's great to hear. She'd definitely be more sick by now... well in my poor lay-person judgement anyway, my boy was sick within 24hrs. You'll be like me now and super cautious of where you put every kind of medication, just in case.
-
Not sure what it was, but it has disappeared back to where it came from. I'm going to monitor for the next few days and if it returns take her straight to the vet.
-
How's your girl this morning Alananddora?
-
About 6 weeks ago my dog ate Heron Blue, but they have ibuprofen... not sure if Voltaren do... we couldn't pin point time (they had access to the house all day) and our vet advised to monitor him. He seemed fine and was happy to eat and drink. When we got home from work the next day he was throwing up every 10mins. Just follow the vets advice and monitor. If there is a change, please get her to the vet straight away. Human drugs can be bad... my boy now has chronic renal failure (though only mild at the moment).
-
It's not a kidney disease as such... about 5wks ago Griffin ate a decent amount of heron blue (ibeprofin) tablets that I had thrown in the bin and this appears to have resulted in damage to his kidneys. The vet is terming it as renal failure. The vet has recommended the hills renal diet canned and dry food, but when I spoke to her about the raw options available she was quite happy for me to go down that path. His creatine level (prior to the drip) was 254 and healthy range is 44-159. We're going to repeat the bloods in a month and see if the change of diet and clearing up the lingering bladder infection has improved the result. My female frenchie sees a vet that specialises in acupuncture and herbal medicine, so I'll be giving her a call today to find out what she may be able to do for me with regards to supplements etc. We're just really happy to have him home.
-
Completely agree, if it's best for him I'll put him on dry food. Just that he gets a little more agro when he's on dry food (weird I know) and my female frenchie cops it. Behaviourist is back from hols soon, so we'll work on that if we need too.
-
Thanks heaps. We're not sure how bad it will be in the long run, but I'm trying to be prepared. Just kicking myself about putting headache tablets in the bin... just didn't imagine they'd choose that day to go into it (never done it before) and now a month later the poor little guy is paying the price. Will check out the BARF diet Bully... thanks so much.

Hi All After an ongoing saga... which is all my fault.... my male frenchie, Griffin, is potentially suffering from kidney damage. He's currently at the vet on a drip in an attempt to bring his levels down so the vet can x-ray his bladder (for stones) and do an eye operation (what he initially went in for). The vet has mentioned that Griffin will need to go onto a kidney diet to try and bring the levels down.... apparently it will need to be low protein. At the moment both the dogs are on a raw diet and I'm taking a stab and guessing he won't be able to have red meat... so my question to everyone is: What should I feed if I don't want to put him onto dry food? Is it ok for him to have a diet with no red meat? Does anyone else have experience with this kind of diet? I know the vet will provide me with info tomorrow, but I think it will involve a dry food of some kind... so I'm just looking for a bit of extra info. Thanks Erin

Hi TracieMC You should come and join us in the frenchie breed forum... go to general discussion and you will find it as a sub forum. Your boy is lovely. I have a pied boy myself. Just be careful they are addictive!

Veterinary Behaviourist Brisbane
spanky replied to gsdog2's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
gsdog2, I was put off by Dr Cam Day when the price was explained to me. Not so much the price (I ended up spending over $200 with Jane Harper), it was more the 30 min consult at a fixed price and then so much per minute after that. There was no guarentee my consult would only last 30mins, so I wasn't happy with that kind of pricing structure. If you don't have any success next week, I could ask my vet for you, as she has mentioned a couple of vet behaviourists to me previously... but I never wrote the names down.
