  1. Don't be shocked, it's an internet forum! I always expect disagreement. However, I do have to say that I really don't identify with the position that supports the officer's actions in any way. I can't identify with your position, it seems to shift. Are you saying the dog was aggressive and its aggression was justified? Or are you saying it wasn't human aggressive? The property owner had the right to have the dogs removed from his property as quickly as possible. Because the dogs were unsafe to handle, they were shot. If these dogs had been hassling livestock in that manner instead of hassling another dog, nobody would even have bothered to try to handle them before shooting.
  2. They started a fire. Then everyone had to put flame suits on.
  3. I wouldn't be annoyed by the vet, you didn't meet him. If her dog is fat and she gives it treats, maybe she should cut back on treats? Feeding chicken necks and wings might be best for dogs, but my own vet's dog died suffocating on a chicken wing, no food is without risks. I don't have too much of a problem with a vet recommending a dentastick. They come in different sizes for different dogs. You don't know if the vet suggested teeth brushing, you don't know what quantity the vet said to feed. You only heard what the lady wanted you to hear. Nice of you to give this lady advice if she wanted to some advice, but no real reason to be annoyed at her vet.
  4. No way. If I see that my house is burning, and there are some kids are in it, I'm going to be pointing some fingers. But I would save my dogs first. Then call police. I would never approach a suspected arsonist of any age.
  5. What a stupid thread this has become. Stacey B, as if I would ever look after somebody else's kid. Keep your kids out of other people's burning houses and away from their dogs and you will be fine. If ever my house burns down and your kids are anywhere nearby, they will be reported to police.
  6. It's not illegal to bring a child up feral. Its not illegal to teach it to annoy other people or animals for whatever reason. It is not illegal to go through life demanding that everyone else looks out for you and you are entitled to touch whatever you like in a public area. So that is why I would quickly leave if ever I was in the OP's situation. Not everyone you meet will be civilised.
  7. People are not saying terriers are bad dogs. They are saying that they have a full-on temperament compared to most other dogs. Dogs are not all equally hard work. They have different requirements for stimulation and exercise which means that different families suit different dogs. Many dogs don't require a lot of training or special management at all. Dogs like these are more common in some breeds than others. A terrier would not suit every home. A good terrier is alert and reactive and always up for some fun. It would be exceedingly hard to train that out of a dog. A family that is new to dog ownership will usually be safer with a dog that is less demanding of their attention. A family new to dog ownership is more likely to make mistakes than an experienced dog owner, and some terriers can be prone to aggression if not managed authoritatively. They can be feisty. This is less likely to happen in some other breeds. Willing to please and easy to train do not translate into easy to own. The dogs that are the easiest to train can often be the dogs that need it the most. Enjoy your terrier if that is the type of dog you like, but I find it easier to cope with five greyhounds in the house than one terrier. I'm a different sort of dog owner.
  8. Of course I am going to quote the part that I wanted to draw attention to instead of your whole post. It's called being concise. So why give credit to her? In order to keep her racing licence she wouldn't be allowed to dump that dog at a pound. Microchipping was never said to be the end of this thing. The solution is to reduce the number of greyhounds bred and increase the number placed in homes as pets. Anyone doing that gets credit, not the ones that can't be bothered. We don't even know that the woman did stay with that dog, or whether she just stayed long enough to get her paperwork signed by the vet. Now let's get back to the judgement. I feel sorry for Mr Mister having to hear the rubbish coming out of that woman's mouth and knowing what was going to happen to that beautiful dog. Rather than being sensitive because she has never seen this before, I would say the more you see it the more sensitive you might get.
  9. I'm judging her, and I have every right to judge her. The woman used "GAP is full" as an excuse! What a misleading thing to say . Dishonestly trying to present herself as a person that didn't have the option of putting the dog in the program. She is a miserable low-life that doesn't value dogs unless she can make money from them. Disgusting. That's my judgement and I stand by it. I guess she should have said GAP run at full capacity ... ..or maybe "GAP cannot take this dog, at this time now, and I have run out of options for her".... ..or "I am a miserable low-life that doesn't value dogs unless I can make money from them".... Who knows. I don't. If the options had run out it is because she didn't care enough to plan in advance, or is not willing to look after the dog for a few more months. As a Victorian racing participant she would have been informed in writing of what her options are so she could make plans at the appropriate time. She mentioned GAP as an excuse for what she did, and she did it dishonestly. She offered no other excuse. She expected people to accept that excuse, because people generally do not understand how to place a dog in GAP. But now everyone here has been informed of how GAP does work, her dishonesty has been revealed. Don't try to offer excuses for dishonesty even if you do excuse what happened to the dog.
  10. I don't see what is so funny. She didn't need to mention GAP at all. She is responsible for deciding to take that dog to the vet and have it euthanised. If people can't be honest about why they are going to have a dog euthed, perhaps they should keep their mouths closed about it.
  11. Really? See, if you're making that as a sweeping statement to all homeopathy, that's where I disagree. I can certainly attest to Calendula Tea having tremendous results for the applications I have put it to. And because of the Calendula, I've been able to steer away from anti-histamines, cortisone. So saying "Homeopathy can never work" is a huge statement that in my experience is simply wrong. Calendula Tea isn't homoeopathy. Tea is made by brewing the flowers in hot water. Where as Homoeopathic remedies are over 99% water and a possibly indiscernible amount of calendular. Calendula is a well known mild herbal treatment because of the chemicals it contains. Homeopathic remedy doesn't contain any of these useful chemicals.
  12. I agree, Greytmate. Although I think it is a little OT which is why I didn't mention it, but definitely IMO from what I read and hear, there are too many times when drugs are prescribed without behaviour modification technique support. Or ..... would behaviour modification techniques be included as conjunctive (not sure if that's the right word I'm looking for) homeopathic treatment? I just meant that the neurotic/anxious owner would be fooled into thinking that the RR will work, and so they calm down themselves. Then the dog wouldn't have have to deal with their anxiety as well as its own. If a dog has behaviour problems a vet should be consulted first to rule out any physical cause, but I wouldn't want to see homoeopathic treatment done alongside behaviour modification if the success of the modification meant that homeopathy was falsely credited for it. Homeopathy can never work, because the treatments are just water.
  13. What do you mean by 'misleading'? Do you mean that GAP never reaches full capacity? Like I said in my earlier post, GAP runs at full capacity. All Victorian racing participants are informed in writing of what steps need to be taken for GAP to accept their dog for assessment. They need to plan in advance for their dog to go into GAP, or maybe be willing to hold onto it for a short time. To simply say that "GAP is full" shows that she is not willing to take any responsibility. If she wanted that dog to have a chance as a pet, she would have made the effort. Plenty of people do.
  14. I'm judging her, and I have every right to judge her. The woman used "GAP is full" as an excuse! What a misleading thing to say . Dishonestly trying to present herself as a person that didn't have the option of putting the dog in the program. 15. There would not be the same bloodlines. Some people breed them for pet and show. It would be sad to see the racing-bred lines disappear, however not all of them are worth preserving. Middle ground perhaps is like GH racing in Finland? Different scene there. Each state here is different too. If we scrapped GH breeding in every state except Victoria, I don't think we would see a decline in quality of racing or breed. There would be fewer dogs wasted.
  16. That's true, but save for when it's an immediate and urgent danger of irreversible harm, isn't a homeopathic remedy such as Rescue Remedy better to try first, rather than reaching for the drug cabinet? See no results in the very short term if not immediately, then move on to the 'big guns' so to speak? If reaching for the RR calms an owner down, half the behaviour modification is probably already achieved. But it seems so very wrong to me to be scamming people by selling them RR instead of encouraging them to try behaviour modification.
  17. Very easy to say GAP is full. The truth is that GAP Victoria always runs at full capacity, and the dogs that it takes in are the ones who had owners that bothered to put them on a waiting list and hold them after racing until their place comes up. If careful planning is done, the wait isn't very long at all. Besides that, it is better for the dogs to be given a few weeks break from racing before going into GAP. We don't know the full story, but with a comment like that it is obvious this woman doesn't want other people to know the full story either. She gets no applause from me.
  18. It isn't just my opinion. There is no evidence available that it works. Many conditions will heal on their own, and that may be attributed to homoeopathy. But in controlled double-blind trials, homoeopathy has shown to be totally ineffective. If people strongly disagree they need to provide the evidence to show they are right. We have been waiting years and no reliable evidence has ever been produced. The advocates of homeopathy are the ones that need to be careful in what they say. In my opinion homoeopathy is just a legal scam. People can disagree, but without evidence they are wasting their time arguing about it.
  19. I don't agree with using homoeopathy. It simply doesn't work. It has no active ingredients. It's useless. We are not talking about masking problems, we are talking about preventing flea, worm and tick problems. Homoeopathy can't do this, and has not been proven to be effective in doing anything other than making money for the people that sell it.
  20. The risk is in allowing the dog to get parasites more than using a parasite control. Fleas and worms take a very long time to kill a dog, but they make life very bad for dogs in the mean time. Where as the popular control products have shown to cause no problems for most of the dogs that they are used on. You might not like administering chemicals, but if you don't then the fleas and worms administer chemicals of their own. Harmful ones that will irritate the dog. If you wait until you notice fleas before treating, the dog and environment will be fully infested by then and it will be harder to shift them. The idea of intestinal worming is to kill any juvenile worms in the gut before they get large and start causing harm and breeding. Much better to treat according to the recommended schedule.
  21. I would take my dog and run away if a child was touching me or doing the wrong thing to my dog. Tempting as it would be to smack the child away, yell at it to frighten it away, or yell at its inattentive parent, for me it's safety first. Last thing I want to do is get in a fight with some bogans on the street or in a park.
  22. Yesterday we witnessed a really foul bogan family let their two untrained dogs off-lead, who then both jumped in the creek and chased wildlife. The chased the water dragons, and ducks and scared all the turtles away. I thought one of the dogs was going to drown at one stage, it was really struggling. I was really hoping one of the disgusting bogans would fall in the creek, but unfortunately it didn't happen. It took them over twenty minutes to get their dogs back on lead, mainly because of the fact that they were so stupid. So there is another angle on not letting dogs off-lead. They harass and kill wildlife and make their owners look like tools.
  23. It is hard to suggest a breed. Any dog can learn to become an escape artist if it gets the opportunity. It's unknown how much exercise they want to do, but whether or not anyone decided to take up jogging won't be of any help to a pup. Only adult dogs should be taken jogging. They want a dog that is easy to train because they have a toddler. It's going to be hard to train any sort of dog not to knock the child over when the child goes outside. Why will the dog only be allowed in while the child is asleep? It sounds like the lady does want an inside dog and the husband doesn't. Unless they are on the same page with dog ownership, they may have some problems there. How often are they prepared to walk the dog? What is it they do with their time now now that they are happy to totally give up to spend time in the backyard with a dog instead? In summer lots of people spend time outside, but in winter, people tend not to spend hours in the backyard. How much less time will they spend outside if there is bad weather? My guess is that they will not want to sit outside at all when the weather is bad.
  24. Karliew, Please send me a recent photo of Marley, my email is [email protected], and I shall do a distant reading and give you the results, no fees, Roger Pye Reiki Master/Teacher Complementary Intuitive Healer Araluen Valley NSW (12 years experience treating humans, animals, plants and places) For those of us who are ignorant about such things, could you please explain how you diagnose by photograph. Crisovar, I'm not a doctor or a vet, I don't make diagnoses, I do readings. I am a Complementary Healer which means the treatments I use work with conventional treatments, they do not interfere or substitute for veterinary treatments or those of other professional modalities (in other words my treatments are complementary to conventional treatments). Every individual living organism no matter how simple (amoeba) or complex (animal, be it human or other) has its own unique vibration. This is often called Signature Frequency or Resonance. Resonance is always positive. The positive resonance of a dog, for example, may be read from a photograph. Whatever is causing Marley's skin to itch will also have its own frequency which affects Marley negatively and may be read as a negative frequency. I have a treatment to make the negative frequency go away. Frequency of what? What resonates?
